This is pretty silly, but we do have to give them credit: Bay Area NBC may have done a report on how incomprehensible our game's jargon is, but at least it's not a report about how WoW breaks up marriages or ruins the lives of children. But yeah, portraying WoW players as aliens with a foreign language all their own is a little far out -- the game's got jargon just like everything else, and what they don't do in this report, unfortunately, is show the etymology of all of these words ("QQ" means to cry because it looks like eyes crying, and "kek," as you know if you've ever been Alliance facing the Horde, is what "lol" translates into from Orcish). Not to mention that it's too bad she comes so close to the "I'm a girl, I don't get videogames" stereotype -- maybe if she sat down in the starting area for 20 minutes she'd know a little bit more about how it all works.
But maybe we're asking too much. Let's not forget that this is the media showing World of Warcraft played by a normal dude with a reporter girlfriend and a nice apartment. Sure, they're didn't spell "pwnz0r" quite right, and the guy isn't exactly "top 10 out of 12 million" -- he does have Ashes of Al'ar, but his guild is actually number 11 on the Greymane server -- but at least they're telling the story instead of trying to write it for us.
Clearly he was ranked top 10 because he has *gasp* the Ashes of A'lar mount. at least that was how I understood it... ("has the Ashes of A'lar to prove it")
t'is a sweet mount and I do want it but it's not an impressive accomplishment more like Double luck or luck and a load of DKP
also why the hell is he playing games all day while his girlfriend works? where is his dignity, find a job too!
The woman keeps treating the man like he's a poor retard who is completely inept socially when she's the one talking like she's a little slow in the head.
Whenever I see a report like this I think to myself, "Huh... Must be a slow news day."
While I do think it's all well and good that the news media acknowledges the existence of World of Warcraft, they just muck it up and make it even more incomprehensible to the people in our lives who don't play the game, but still try to understand.
At this point it seems that the writers for TV shows like Leverage are better suited to explain World of Warcraft to the masses than our basic news channels.
Promotion of the Week: say something funny that only a few understand and NBC will make a report about you! Will even rank you in some odd scale! Remember that "Ni!" and "Kupo!" count, although they are short, we don't understand so we will treat you like the nerd we think you are!
/silly off
I agree with you, better to do some friendly aproaches to WoW that anyone can understand (like in How I met your mom, South Park and Leverage) and NOT make this kind of report that is confusing and makes WoW players look like goofy-speaking geeks. People in Medicine or Biochemistry talk funny, I don't see any of these kind of reports about it. Like them, we are normal people!
Well said Meira. As mentioned in the article there is jargon in any line of work, and almost any hobby. Video games, IMO, is a hobby. Just like building R/C Airplanes or something, if they started talking about propeller types and whatnot we'd probably be lost if we're not part of the sub-culture.
Meria ,,,you are ABSOLUTEY correct. The other day I was talking to my co-workers about some of the math classes I survived in college and they all looked at me like I was speaking svengali... these were the same people the other day who had no problem understanding the conversation about wintergrasp.
/sigh
we are all weird to someone... at least it wasn't "WoW is ruining our dinner..."

stupidhuman Feb 2nd 2009 11:12PM
Well, he's got 1600 arena rating... so top ten, HELL YEA!
Mike Feb 3rd 2009 3:01AM
If she actually lived with the dude, I can understand.
If my girl wouldn't rank me at least top ten out of all WoW geeks, I'd be pretty pissed off ;-)

Why do I have this sudden burst of nostalgia for all the news stories in the '80s about Dungeons and Dragons?
Meh, coincidence.
