The Queue: Legendaries are for suckers

What? Me lace a post title with jealousy? I would never do that! Never ever! Okay, okay, maybe there's some jealousy there. Can you blame me? Screw purps, I want me some orange. Orange is where it's at, cat.

I have a question about legendary items. Do we know what Legendary items are planned for WotLK? Are there currently any in the game? If not what are planned for the future or can we speculate? It sounds like Ashbringer will not be a item that a player will be able to get. Is that true? Also, what about upgrade quest for old world legendary items. It seems like so much work went into getting them (Thunderfury anyone?) that it seems a shame that they are worthless.
Wrath of the Lich King doesn't have any legendary items yet that we've seen. We really have no idea what Legendary items they'll be adding in the future, but you're right about speculation. The two that people assume we'll be able to get our hands on are Ashbringer and Frostmourne, but at this point neither of them seem particularly likely unless something awful goes down at the end of Wrath. If Tirion bites the dust (which will be disappointing now that he's getting real in-game build-up), we'll probably get Ashbringer. I'm willing to bet that if we get Frostmourne, it'll be 'powered down' a little lore-wise. We'll probably damage it in some way in the Arthas fight, or it'll lose some zing when it's cut off from its connection to Ner'zhul. Something like that.
Or maybe we'll get something else entirely for our legendaries. We don't know.
As far as upgrading old world Legendaries, Blizzard has said that they don't really want to do that, though nothing says they won't change their mind on it later. The items are really, really good when you can get them, but they really shouldn't be the only weapon you ever use. As cool as having a Legendary is, it'd be sort of lame if it's the only item you ever used ever once you get it.

Any word on recipes coming out to upgrade the Axe/Hammer/Swordsmthing epic weapons like Blazefury?
We won't be seeing upgrades to Burning Crusade items.

Speaking of soloing content, is it possible for a higher level arcane mage to solo instances in the same way a mail or plate wearer can? Assuming equal character and gear levels. I ask because I'm used to playing melee and could really clear stuff quickly and now am leveling a mage and generally feel very vulnerable going into enclosed spaces.
It's going to largely depend on the encounter. Any bosses that are casters and don't melee very much, you'll take them out easier than most melee would as long as you're using all of the tools available to you. The other question is, can you kite what you're trying to solo? Raid bosses you probably won't be able to do that, but a lot of 5-man bosses you can get away with kiting them around a bit or using terrain to make them chase you while you pelt away.
It's really going to depend on the encounter, and I highly recommend experimenting before deciding you can't do something. If you can blow up a boss before he blows you up, success! You can't take a beating as well as a Warrior can, but you do have the advantage of starting at range and higher burst potential. Experiment!

I've just respecced my hunter from BM to Surv--not because it's the flavor of the month spec, but because I was to be sure my 10-man group has Replenishment--and I was using a Spirit Beast before, which I can't use anymore. All of my non-exotic pets are still only 75. What would be the fastest, least grindy/annoying way to level my pet?
The obvious answer here is "quests," but I already did all of the quests in Northrend for money. Yes really, all of them. ^^;
There are always daily quests for mobs to kill, or you can stick to dungeons and/or Heroics. It shouldn't take terribly long to level that pet, so you might want to go the dungeons route to dodge grinding out dailies. Heroics will bring you emblems and such at the same time, so there's some extra benefit beyond just pet XP.
If you don't mind daily quests, it might be a good time to work on some of your reputation. The Ebon Blade has a number of daily quests that involve just plain killing things, and the Sons of Hodir have a few of those as well. If those aren't particularly attractive, you might be stuck just murderizing mobs somewhere. Sorry.

And here I thought subjecting a group to a pet five levels under the mobs we'd be fighting would be out of the question in most people's minds. >.>
Ashvoyager Feb 4th 2009 5:51PM
I bet that no one would even notice what level the pet is or what its name is.
rrrrarr Feb 4th 2009 5:56PM
It should be for heroics. You should not be subjecting a group to that even as a survival hunter. Your pet is going to miss too much.
Go to Petopia, find the highest level pet of the type you want, tame it and grind with it for a couple hours. It's not that bad. Find a place with a lot of mobs that respawns fast... I'm being selfish and not offering up my location... And just kill, kill, kill. I think I leveled up my 78 wasp in about 2 hours, and made a ton of gold as a skinner and from vendor trash/greens
Tzivya Feb 4th 2009 6:00PM
Be aware petopia isn't perfect, and last I checked did NOT list level 80 tameables in NR heroics.
I got a nice lime-green raptor from H Drak when I went sv, very happy with it, and no fuss on leveling.
Kakistocracy Feb 4th 2009 6:24PM
If you're geared enough to raid, I think you can stand to lose a little dps in a heroic badge run. If a group of new 80s can clear a heroic without too much trouble, than unless you are planing to have the pet tank, you'll be fine.
bonse Feb 5th 2009 7:40AM
just to put another concern among non hunters to rest, a pet has the aggro radius of the level of the hunter, not itself
Angus Feb 5th 2009 8:35AM
You can easily do 5+ dailies that involve killing a lot of mobs at once.
Frenzyheart or Oracle has the quest with the battle in the south.
Tuskar has the "creepy guy in a white van" quest in dragonblight.
Ebon Blade likes it when you shove swords in people in Ice Crown.
Argent Crusade wants people freed of the whispers.
Your faction wants you to kill Vyrkul and escort people up a mountain.
And since the person here wouldn't tell you a grinding spot, I will.
Icecrown, NW, where the "yellow" fallen heroes run and just before they vanish and the ones that are red are a little south of you. There is a choke point in that valley. You can choose to fight a lot, or a few. They'll keep coming to you and you can even farm frostweave. My wife and I spend an hour there each week to feed her tailoring habit... er assist her profession. We usually walk out with around 10-15 stacks in that hour due to her tailoring ability. (I'm a tankdin, so I can grind those mobs in my sleep.)

Hey guys thanks for the response. I wouldn't mind if Tirion bit it so I can have an Ashbringer. I know hes cool and all but I am way cooler. I still think they need to make upgrade quests for legendaries. Its not like you would use it the whole time. There would be better weapons for you until you finished the epic quest chain to upgrade the item. But I guess I am preaching to the choir. Thanks again.
CactusHam Feb 4th 2009 7:50PM
I don't feel like Tirion has to die for us to be able to obtain Ashbringer... perhaps he simply passes it onto us (the player) after we do some super-heroic deed. I can imagine some kind of scenario where a very rare (legendary...) drop, combined with an epic quest chain could result in somehow impressing Tirion into giving you the Ashbringer -- I don't know how much that would fit into Blizzard's idea of everyone getting to experience all of the cool storyline stuff as very few people would get to experience whatever quest chain they put together for that, but I had to think of some way that Tirion could survive and still put the Ashbringer in my hands. Plus phasing could make it so any player with Ashbringer would see Tirion wielding some other weapon.
And the debate rages as to whether we'll be able to obtain Frostmourne... I'm sure we will, and for a long time I thought that was kind of dumb because of the lore and power surrounding the sword (how are we able to escape its call?) but thinking about it... the only way we're going to get it is if we defeat Arthas, which means we'd *probably* be killing Ner'zhul as well, and it's his spirit infused in the sword, so when he's dead, Frostmourne probably loses a lot of the power we associate it with. However... I can imagine an angle Blizzard could take where in the Arthas fight we somehow expel Ner'zhul from Arthas' soul, saving Arthas -- and setting up an encounter against Ner'zhul in a Sunwell-esque (expansion timeline wise) final raid of WotLK. If that's the case... another epic question to break Frostmourne of the Lich King's power could explain the player's ability to wield it. I can imagine some kind of epic, heavily phased quest line to save your own soul and refuse the call of the Lich King.
Riftsrunner Feb 5th 2009 5:23PM
At Blizzcon 2007, they had a stat card for Frostmourne. Unfortunately, it had the line of "Equip: The wielder of Frostmourne will become the new Lich King." They did say this was shot down by many of the developers, but it seems they don't want to lose the Lich King character as a villian. So I doubt Frostmourne will drop unless it is quickly stolen back by some minion of the Scourge (unless the player wants to lose their 80 character to NPC status). So if Ownsyouhard player character gets the sword it is now Lich King Ownsyouhard NPC for the next groups of heroes to defeat and down until the next drop of Frostmourne and it gets transfered. ;-P

The devs were talking about some upgraded Atiesh back in the day. Anyway, I think it'd be totally cool, if we got the Ashbringer at the end of some epic quest chain, so like slaying Arthas at the end, and then Fordring just hands it over.
Khamûl Feb 4th 2009 6:20PM
At Blizzcon this past year, one of the Devs mentioned that casters were overdue for a legendary since they didn't get one in BC. I don't think that they explicitly said anything about Atiesh, nor did they explicitly state that casters would definitely be getting a legendary.
Thander Feb 4th 2009 5:40PM
I thought pets didn't get any xp from quest turn ins?
You won't level your pet any faster questing vs grinding. Grinding might even be faster if some of the quests you are doing are killing stuff in vehicles where you don't get mob xp.
AyaJulia Feb 4th 2009 5:47PM
Pets don't get exp from turn-ins, no, but you're missing the "least grindy" part of the equation. I like questing, which inevitably involves killing mobs and getting pet exp, but I can't. ;)
I'm not sure why I asked the question now that I look back at it, to be honest. Assuming 25 dailies are done, questing is out of the question, heroics are out of the question (I refuse to bring in an underleveled pet, I respect my groups more than that), normal dungeons feel worse than grinding... there's really only one option.
Rob Feb 4th 2009 6:13PM
Least grindy is probably a heroic or normal instance. If you have a well-geared group, your 100ish dps decrease isn't going to make or break the group. But yeah if it's a PUG or if you know it's questionable if the group could do it, you are adviced to bring whatever you can to max dps; pot, flask, pet, whatever. That goes for everyone IMO.
jared.daniels Feb 4th 2009 5:40PM
Would you recommend getting the inherited plate shoulderpads solely for the purpose of levelling my Death Knight and Warrior from 70-80? My main is a Mage and I am coming close to being able to buy the ones from using Stone Keeper Shards.
If no, then what would you recommend I do with the shards?
vazhkatsi Feb 4th 2009 6:20PM
if like me, you don't want the mammoth, you can do one of three things- buy shoulders, they are rather nice for leveling, and with rested you get 215% experience. buy a weapon, these are also very nice, got one of the badge ones on my shaman now. or buy and sell kharmaa's grace, they go for around 50g each on my server, and at 20 shards apiece, thats some nice money right there.
I'm assuming non JC
VSUReaper Feb 4th 2009 6:42PM
If you have 2 alts that use the same armor class (plate, mail, leather, cloth) and its the same kind of armor (spell power gear vs melee) then yes, its worth it.
If I read correctly, thats 20 levels with a 10% boost to experience gains that you are getting from your stones/badges. I personally suggest getting the badge ones, and not the stone keeper ones b/c the stat budget is wasted on resil (unless you are a hardcore pvp/ganker).
Long story short: you have 2 melee's that wear plate? Get the shoulders.
William Sagemire Feb 4th 2009 5:42PM
I wouldn't take your 75 pet to PUG runs, but ask your guild if it's ok with them. My last guild had no complaints about me and the other hunters doing it to powerlevel our pets. But that was also before the BM nerfs.
tagashi Feb 4th 2009 5:47PM
It is considered very bad form to bring a sub-80 pet in to a heroic. It will miss so often, that you may as well not bring it at all. It's just rude to assume that the people you just grouped with want to put up with your sub-par performance because you are too lazy to level your pet like the other hunters. Save that for a guild run where people might actually want to help you.
