Pronouncing character names correctly
Sylphine suffers from a problem that's very close to home for me: her character's name is often pronounced incorrectly by others in game. And while it's close not only because I routinely mangle names on the podcast (both accidentally and sometimes, I'll admit, for comedic purposes), but my own name is of questionable pronounciation. When I was creating my very first character ingame, I was stumbling around for a creative name, and I ended up going with a variation of the word I saw on the "Random" button in front of me: Rande. Truth be told, I have no idea how to pronounce it -- I guess I prefer "Rand" over "Randey," only because the second sounds so close to "Randy," so usually I'll just go what whatever someone says in the game. But I can see Sylphine's issue: it's probably a pain to spend so much time on a name only to have it wrecked daily.And of course, this epidemic isn't only connected to character names -- being that this is a virtual world where text is the usual form of communication, it's very common to see place names and NPC names mispronounced more often than not.
In the end, you just have to do what I do: try your best and hope you get it right. And from the other side of it, don't be too angry when people mess up your name. There are 12 million of us out there, and nobody's going to get everything right.

I have it in my guild note that my name is pronounced "quothe", but often people still get it wrong on vent. Usually they realize they are saying something wrong, however, so it's pretty easy to just correct them.

The source material for your name deliberately had the character Kvothe introduce himself by saying "rhymes with quothe" so people knew how to pronounce it.

I've had my character name since beta, Ewiges, yet sadly I've only had two people pronounce it right. Worst of all, most people can't even spell it right.
AyaJulia Feb 5th 2009 9:58PM
@BigBiker05: We should all be born with an inherent knowledge of how to pronounce such a left-field name or something? Get over yourself, it's not "sad" that someone can't pronounce that.

@BigBiker
Yeah, language of origin is not always immediately apparent, even if might have some clue on how that language is used, especially when so many people use made up, "fantasy" names that follow no standard conventions.

I challenge anyone to give the correct Celtic pronunciation for my characters named Caronwyn, Eirwen and Gairdh.
As a tip, in Celtic, 'Maebh' is pronounced the same as 'Maiev'.
The pronunciation of Deiwos isn't obvious either, but the 'dei' is pronounced the same as in 'deity'.
Just because it's clear to BigBiker, doesn't mean it is to anyone else.

"I challenge anyone to give the correct Celtic pronunciation for my characters named Caronwyn, Eirwen and Gairdh."
my guess
Caronwyn = Ca-ro-noo(ee)-in
Eirwen = Ay-roo-en (or eye-roo-en / ee-roo-en)
Gairdh = Ga-eer-dah

I was lucky enough to choose a character name that I thought was cool but when pronounced incorrectly, sounds close enough to my real life name, and I don't mind that. So I'm one of the fortunate few.
And on a related note I just wanted to add:
C'Thun (pronounced "Kah-Thoon" or "Kathune") =)
equinn Feb 5th 2009 8:47PM
I refuse to pronounce it as such.
I prefer See-Thoon thanks :D

c'thun-pronounced like cthulu. (thoolu)

After 2 years of playing "Sechet", *I* still don't know how to pronounce it. I forgive anyone else who doesn't either. (I usually go with "Sesh-ette", most other people go "Sesh-ay"... eh, whatever.)

My main character is named Khanus. I pronounce it KAH-nus, but some people have a problem and end up pronouncing it Kaynus. I usually let that pronunciation go, as it's not too far off. What gets me, though, is recently there has been an outbreak of people calling me Kansas, for no conceivable reason other than their text is too small on screen and can't read it.
Padooj Feb 5th 2009 8:34PM
I think "kayness" would really bother me, because of it's rhyming counterpart.
Viare Feb 5th 2009 9:06PM
I'm really sorry... but all I see is "--anus".
:(
Thanus Feb 5th 2009 11:59PM
I have that EXACT same problem!
tkbaby13 Feb 5th 2009 8:13PM
Yevon
Correct - Yeh-Vin
Incorrect - Yeh-Vaan
Though I tend to call myself Yevaan sometimes, im just so use to it.

Maybe someone can clear this up for me:
Dalaran
is it: dalla-RAN
or
Dah-LA-ran
Keyra Feb 5th 2009 8:19PM
I've heard both "DAL-uh-ran" and "duh-LA-ran" (just to add to the confusion)
Hansbo Feb 5th 2009 8:22PM
the focus is on Dal, if you should trust the pronounciation from warcraft III :)
DAL-ah-rahn, that is.
Sorcefire Feb 6th 2009 2:36PM
I agree, the emphasis should be on the Dal. Of course, people in my guild constantly call it Dalarian for some strange reason. They also butcher Utgarde (Uttergard) and Wyrmrest (Wire'em'rest). Makes me cringe to hear them talk sometimes.
