The threat dump of Vanish, just like the one of Feign Death, can indeed be resisted, so while you actually enter stealth, the mob(s) still have you as a target and ignore your stealth, since you are still in combat with them. So they continue to hit you and stealth/vanish fades.

Forgot to mention that there might indeed be a bug, though not on the vanish mechanic, but on the resist not showing up in the combat log.
