WoW in 3D doesn't work so well
3D seems to be making a reemergence lately -- there was a 3D commercial on the Super Bowl last week, I'm going to see Coraline in 3D this weekend (Neil Gaiman and stop motion for the win), and Nvidia's 3D Vision cards have recently been integrated with World of Warcraft. But not so fast there: apparently while the system does make WoW stereoscopic (sends a different picture to each eye), and while it does work for some media (apparently watching 3D HD content with the system "feels like your monitor is a window"), analyst Rob Enderle over at TG Daily says WoW in 3D isn't all that amazing.Let's not forget, of course, that this is a game going on four years old, and while it has a terrific art style, and has recieved multiple graphic updates since then, we're still dealing with old technology in terms of a graphic engine. So Enderle says that the 3D really makes you realize that there are no real physics in the game -- "the objects," he says, "look like flat cutouts fanned out in a 3D field." The physical limitations are there, too -- you need a special monitor, apparently, and it's only 22" big, which might seem fine for most, but anyone who works all day on a computer (like yours truly), is used to a little bigger screen.
Not to mention that, as he says, any technology that requires you to wear glasses isn't quite as cool as it could be yet. But 3D is obviously making progress, and the more popular it gets, the easier it'll be to make and experience. Maybe someday we'll all see Azeroth as a 3D world around us.

I read from a review that it's pretty awsome, with the action bars up "in front" and everything further away.
But the cursor was supposed to be a bit broken, staying only on the HUD level and it feels weird to click on stuff that are "all the way back there, somewhere".

Could that picture have been any more random of the elderly couple wearing glasses....

Take whatever Endrele says with a grain of salt. He's been a thorn in the side of the Linux ANC open source community for a long time. It's hard to tell who owns him at any given time, so he very well might be schilling for some other company trying to market a similar product.
Then again, he might actually be telling the truth here, but it's just hard to take that guy seriously.

"So Enderle says that the 3D really makes you realize that there are no real physics in the game"
Objects and physics are different things.

I really want to see head tracking (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw) added in WoW. It seems like something that nVidia and Blizzard would have to get together about, like their current 3d crap. It wouldn't require 2x the graphics power and the glasses would only need IR LEDs, not flickery headacheness.

This is exactly what I was about to post. I really wish Blizz would work on something like this. The effect would be amazing for WoW.

I would not be a fan of the 3D because I'm legally blind in one eye, I only have peripheal vision in that eye. So, I am physically incapable of seeing things in 3D.

Welcome back to the world of 3D...at least in pictures.

I am legally blind in one eye as well. And only have very slight perphs. There are glasses out there that allow you to see 3d images. I onced used a pair at six flags in 2000. The regular red/blue glasses do not work, however these did. They used both the red and blue in each lenses in small particles, it was Awesome. Email me though if you want the info on the glasses as I'll be researching it myself.

Really? I don't know anyone with a screen bigger than 22" personally..

Word; what I really don't get is that somehow working on a computer all day means you're accustomed to a big screen. That's like saying "if you work at a supermarket you love cantaloupe sandwiches", it just doesn't follow.
Chuddy Feb 5th 2009 4:50PM
I do at work. :-)
at home i'm only a old 22. Prices of them dropped though, 169$ at newegg is insano cheap.
Kyle Feb 5th 2009 5:01PM
And people I know who work all day at a computer do not have 22" screens either; their companies can't afford replacing all their monitors (even though, as Chuddy mentioned, they're getting cheaper and cheaper) and have outdated 17" maybe 19" if you're lucky. A lot of these people use plain old laptop screens which are even smaller (15" usually)

I work at a computer all day as well, and my displays are "only" 22". All three of them.
I also have the same setup at home. It works great for WoW where you can have the game on the center display, quest notes/wowhead on another, and music/email/etc on the third.
Of course people's gut reaction to something like that is "you must have money to burn." I just have my priorities a little different. I spend all evening at my computer, so I have a nice setup there. My couch was free, dining room table was free, etc...
JDM Feb 5th 2009 7:14PM
I do have a larger one myself, but none of my friends or gamemates have anything over 19"
Thrush Feb 6th 2009 10:43AM
Yeah ... I work on a 19" LCD all day and play WoW on a 15" laptop. Dont be so spoiled with your 22's.
jbodar Feb 8th 2009 5:48AM
At work, I use a 19" LCD paired with an ANCIENT 21" CRT with, shall we say, color and brightness issues. I swear that thing must weigh a good 70 lbs. It was either that or a crappy, 6 yr old 17" LCD (ugh).

i have 26 inch monitor downgrading to 24 inch never mind 22 is puttin me off not totally but its a concern!
Kia Feb 5th 2009 4:28PM
Only 22"? -Only-? Christ, I wish I had that kind of cushy position, where 22" warranted an "only."
Yeng Feb 5th 2009 4:34PM
Tim from CAD did a review on this about a week ago or so and his review was rather positive. While its obviously a 'gimmick' type peripheral, it seemed to do what it advertised.
