Big changes for Hunters in patch 3.1
No more quivers, no more pouches, no more bullets to make us slouches. Ok, so I'm terrible at poetry, but you get the picture. This has been on a lot of Hunters' wish lists for a long time, but it's finally here. No more ammo. Or rather, ammo will be an item more like a relic or a wand that modifies our ranged weapon damage without being consumed. Engineers, that means you better make hay while the sun shines. Soon, we'll be buying our last crate of Mammoth Cutters ever.
This is far from the only changed announced tonight -- or this morning, depending on where you are. Let's look at them all one by one.Consumable ammunition has been removed from the game. Arrows and bullets no longer stack, but are not consumed. Ranged attack speed bonus gained from quivers and ammo bags will be preserved in a different capacity.
So this is the big one, no question about it. Finally, we get a whole new bag slot (I forsee a lot of Onyxia soloing by Hunters in the near future), bigger bank accounts, and no more running back to Dalaran or Shattrath to replenish Ammo unless we really want to. Overall, this is a massive boon. The big question is where the quiver haste will come from. The easiest way would be to transfer it to the ammo, but then it would also buff the ranged attack speed of Warriors and Rogues, which is probably why we also shouldn't expect to see relic-like bonuses on ammo, unless they're very specific to Hunter skills only.
A new tier of hunter pet talents have been added. In particular, this allows Beastmaster hunters to improve their damage per second (DPS) with their 51 point talent.
This is probably the safest way to buff Beastmastery without accidentally buffing Survival and Marksmanship. By making an extra set of pet skills and putting them at the bottom of the tree, where it will be difficult for anyone but a Beastmaster to scrape together the points for them, they're not only buffing Beastmasters alone, but encouraging the use of the 51 point talent instead of the 50/21 hybrid builds that got Beastmasters in trouble in the first place.
It is interesting to note here that Ghostcrawler implied that we'd be getting Beastmastery buffs before 3.1, so whether they're holding off until 3.1 now or are adding this in addition to other tweaks remains to be seen.
Hunting Party – this talent has been reduced to 3 ranks and also grants a passive bonus to the hunter.
Replenishment has been getting a lot of press lately, what with Ghostcrawlers declaration that it is mandatory and will likely be more so once the mana regen changes make it live, so it's not too surprising that they're making it easier and more compelling to take all at once for Survival Hunters. It may also be part of their work to "equalize" various buff varieties between classes.
Piercing Shots – this talent has been changed. Your Aimed, Steady and Chimera Shots cause the target to bleed for 10/20/30% of damage dealt for 8 sec.
Adding a bleed that ignores armor is a very nice sizable buff over the 6% quasi armor penetration on Steady and Aimed Shots the current version brings. It also provides some nice synergy with Feral Druids and Hunger for Blood Rogues.
Sniper Training – this talent has been changed. After standing still for 6 sec, you gain a 2/4/6% damage bonus to Steady, Aimed and Explosive Shot.
Well, I suppose it'll be nice for Patchwerk. This may be meant to be a slight PvP nerf, but even in PvE, what with so many raid-level fights needing movement, it may end up being an additional nerf. Of course, it may be more useful in 5-mans, allowing you to stand closer in tight areas or to avoid patrols and still gain the talent's benefits. Overall, I think the jury's still out on exactly where this change stands.
We are also looking to add additional trap functionality to Survival.
This will probably come mostly in the long promised revamp for Trap Mastery, and to make up for possible further nerfs to TnT and Explosive Shot. It's something we've been expecting for ages, but it's nice to at least see they haven't forgotten.
They may still have more up their sleeve for Hunters, of course. The Ammo is a major change, and may be what Ghostcrawler meant when he talked about those earth-shaking changes, but it felt like he meant something bigger still. We may hear about it as we get closer to 3.1, or they may have quietly discarded it. Either way, I'm at least expecting some Beastmastery hot fixes and perhaps another Survival Explosive Shot nerf besides the stealth one they threw in a few days ago. Stay Tuned to WoW Insider. We'll let you know what goes down.

Didn't they say that one of the upcomming changes would be that soul drain would drain a soul even if the mob didn't die? It doesn't sound like they are planning to get rid of shards if that is the case, though it does sound like there will be many more shards to be had. I suspect that warlocks soul bags will be changed to be equipped in the ammo slot and the soul bags will have their limit greatly increased, probably though the shards stacking. This will save the warlock the same regular bag slot that the hunter will be saving and yet retain the usefulness and cool factor of soul drain. Warlocks also don't use soul stones quite like a hunter uses arrows currently. They are more of a reagent than an ammo.
As for the quiver bonus. I suspect that it will be something you apply to your endless ammo item like an enchantment. Probably the quiver itself will simply be turned into the enchantment that then gets used once.

I doubt they will put a lot of effort into keeping the ranged haste bonus away from Warriors and Rogues. It is not like they use their ranged weapon for much more than pulling and killing rifts in Nexus. It is not exactly going to imbalance the game. And it is not like they don't already have access to this "buff", both could equip a quiver if they wanted to currently. They just don't because it is not useful to them. I suspect this will continue to be the case.

Oh good! One less thing for us Huntards to have to worry about while we are busy mashing the macro key.

So! It wasnt enough from blizzard to make every instance doable with green geared fury specced tanks. Make TIER gear available for everyone, nothing is special anymore! I remember in pre wotlk having tier gear ment something... Now every moroon can have it. And they have proven it many times so far=( And now..hunters dont have to use Ammo. im A hunter and i think this sucks.. This whole game is so easy nowdays. Well ty blizzard for putting the final nail in the coffert! If this becomes reality... ty for me and have fun and GL everyone=) It was a good game once...

I agree with this. I don't mind keeping stupid amounts of pet food on myslelf, usually two different kinds. I dont mind keeping a bag full of ammo or even 8 ammo crates on me at any given time. I also keep underwater breathing helms, mote extractors, pvp gear, water, bandages, trinkets, etc etc. All this adds to the game in my opinion. Giving hunters an additional bag slot or something for the ammo makes sense, same wiht locks...but to eliminate it? I already dislike that my hunter is not so much a physical class anymore, but a magic class. That takes all the fun out of the toon. I dont mind going to the stables to get my pet...makes sense..hell if I was the game designer I piss on all of you because I'd only let the pet be taken out of the stable he resides in.
Blizzard is catering WAAAY to much to the 10 year old QQing morons that have been ruining this game for over 2 years now.

Arrows cost $
Shards do not.
Bag space is nice for everyone, but hunters are the only ranged class paying gold for every attack.
At least locks dont get charged gold for every cast.
And, unless you are in heroic raids, you probably dont need more than 5 or 6 shards to play it safe, and you can always kill a trash mob for more. It's not like you have to fly back to a city, and pay about 30g when you run out.
Raideen Feb 16th 2009 6:44PM
feign death...you dont die, you dont pay repair costs...that is the balance for buying ammo...
Dumbingdown Feb 6th 2009 6:42PM
Errr... yea... I do not approve of the changes to ammo, and my main is a hunter and engineer. I prefer the requirement to keep ammo at all times, and the ability for engineers to make said ammo. For one, it doesnt cost me anything for ammo, and two, I sell it on the AH or give/trade with others for their commodities. This is a serious kick in the nutz to all of us endgame engineers (please see below for the rest), and it (like other hunter changes in the past year) continues to dumb-down the hunter class even further... to the point that being a 'good' hunter beans absolutely nothing.
Further, this announced change is ruining the engineering profession. Much like the changes to the Repair bot, and the sheer weakness of the goggles which are replaced in naxx-10, takes away the uniqueness and reward from the engineering profession. But thats not all, I believe that Blizzard is focusing far too much on shiny new spells and class mechanics, that they're totally forgetting the real meaning and value behind crafting professions.
For one, the quicker leveling process, and RAF, scale much faster than all gathering and crafting professions. If you make a new character and get them to 10, 20, 30, etc.. the amount of materials gathered to increase their crafting is far below their character level. Also, materials required to make many items are not obtainable until higher levels, where the said crafted item is then weaker than a random green dropped at those higher levels.
This game is getting too easy.

Will you get a free pet respecc?
Grendalsh Feb 9th 2009 4:35AM
Since Hunters won't have to pay for their ammo anymore, does this mean as a Warrior, I won't have to pay for repairs anymore? I have to pay to do my thing (survive being beaten on), but Hunters won't have to pay to do their thing (consuming ammo)? Pfeh.

I thought you would have realized it by now. Blizzard loves hunters and hates tanks.
why do you think most gear for tanks to start out is crafted? why do you think a tank in full tank gear can't get the epic achievement (at least until 3.1)
also: apparently blizzard hates engineers too, but I'll rant about taht later.
volicio Feb 9th 2009 4:35PM
As a hunter I have very mixed feelings about this whole ammo issue. On the one hand we don't have the giant gold sink that is ammo cost anymore. On the other hand, I'd really love to know who is going to pay me back for all the money i just sunk into buying a Dragonscale Ammo Pouch(250g on my server) and filling it with Mammoth Cutters(40g each on my server)? I estimate, just in the last 20 days I've dumped more that 3k gold into ammo just to be able to keep up in Naxx.
As for the other improvements, being one of the few 51 BM's that survived 3.0.8 I'm happy to see my pets getting more talents.

Until bliz makes soul shards stack, once again they are just showing how much they like hunters.
because yeah, you don' thave to have a soul shard bag, and yeah, you don't have to have a quiver/ammo pouch either. but it sure frikkin helps don't it?
I hope that with this change they could also make soul shards stack, because I find in a raid, for soulstoning, summoning, healthstoning, and minion summoning after a wipe, my bags of shards get mighty empty.
I'd love bliz if they made soul shards stack.

This is a bad idea.
I can't stand the thought of not having to buy arrows, to be honest.
How the hell can you shoot something 200 times with one arrow?
The only way they could possibly play this off right is by making it a 'Bundle of Mammoth Cutters' with a durability like thrown weapons...
Just as well, this puts my engineer out of a job, unless they let engineers make better arrows/bullets then are even now available.
Piklez Feb 25th 2009 1:16AM
I have a questioon regarding duel speccing for hunters (forgive my typos, I'm typing with my iPhone)
Let's say you're BM, and you arevsuing an exotic pet at the moment. When you switch to you're other build, what happens to your pet? Does it just dismiss itself? I have always BM and never switched builds, so I'm just curious.
Also, what's the release date of 3.1? Is there an actual day that's been decided? Please reply someone.
MENNONH Feb 28th 2009 7:47PM
So, I know Engineering has never been that big of a money making proffession, but now this will make it even less of one. What are they to do for us now?
Brighterside Apr 14th 2009 5:31PM
I don't think Locks have that much to complain about really. Come on, my Mage uses up a bag slot with her enchanting bag. Locks don't have to pay for ammo and go to a city to buy ammo. All they have to do is go outside and kill a mob and voila! They have themselves a soulshard free of charge. Heck they can even make shards during a raid or running an instance if they want to. Hunters don't have that luxury.
Frankly though, I think this is great and will cut down on my expenses in the long run. But I hope that this is not one of those hidden Blizzard agendas where they wanna nerf something of hunters by pretending that they are giving hunters a buff. Just like a Trojan horse per se. I still want to keep my %15 attack speed increase from the ammo pouch which I was able to make through rep and farming mats.
