The price of the ammo is nothing compared to the dps increase you get from using it. I used to think like you do and used only the cheapest ammo because I thought it wasn't worth it but then when I hit outland way back in the day (started during BC) I found that it was completely worth it.

Have been BM spec since the day I started and using ammo faster than the other specs but for me the money from a raid usually balanced itself out with repairs and the ammo bill.
