Phat Loot Phriday: Avool's Sword of Jin

That doesn't look like a sword. It just looks like a terrifying swath of death! We love it.
Name: Avool's Sword of Jin (Wowhead, Thottbot, WoW-Arsenal)
Type: Epic One-hand Sword
Damage/Speed: 150-280 / 1.50 (143.3 DPS)
Abilities:
Name: Avool's Sword of Jin (Wowhead, Thottbot, WoW-Arsenal)
Type: Epic One-hand Sword
Damage/Speed: 150-280 / 1.50 (143.3 DPS)
Abilities:
- +38 Agility, +36 Stamina
- Improves hit rating by 31 and attack power by 62
- Great sword for Rogues or Hunters, though the method of obtaining it (see below) probably outweighs the actual stats of it, unless you really, really want one. The hit is great, the fact that it can be dual wielded is nice, and the attack power is just icing on the cake.
- Plus, just look at it. If someone is running at you and holding that thing, it's pretty clear they don't want to give you a hug and take you out to dinner. It reminds me of the Kill-O-Zap guns from the Hitchhiker's Guide: "the designers of which decided to make it totally clear that it had a right end, and a wrong end, and if that meant sticking blacked and evil-looking devices and prongs all over the wrong end, so be it."
- And you might be wondering: who is Avool? We have no idea -- while "Jin" and the sword itself seem very Troll-related in nature, we haven't found any reference to anyone named Avool in the lore (personally, it sounds to me like "A fool," so maybe this isn't a real Jin sword). But it's likely some minor Troll deity or hero, and this is his sword of crazy evil.
- Update: Commenter The Mushy says it's named for Vulajin, of the Roguecraft spreadsheet. Good call.
That said, the cost/luck required to get this means it's not exactly required for endgame -- you can pick up nice swords and weapons just like this one in the regular instance drops, and there's one nice alternative in the Badge loot. But none of them are as crazy as this one -- if you want a really scary sword, you'll have to get luck or shell out.
Getting Rid of it: If you haven't equipped it yet, you can sell it on the AH -- prices range from around 2000g up to 4000g depending on supply and demand on your server. Otherwise, it sells back to vendors for 18g 70s 27c, and disenchants into an (you guessed it) Abyss Crystal.

That sword is going for 1800g+ on my server. I wouldn't mind having them but just too expensive for my tastes.

I really want the new Krol blade for my rogue, just for the memories if nothing else.
The Mushy Feb 6th 2009 5:17PM
its named for Vulajin, the roguecraft spreadsheet guy over at elitistjerks.
jaxson_bateman Feb 6th 2009 10:39PM
I doubt it - you've made quite a stretch without a source.

sometimes they call me A Fool
Azizrael Feb 6th 2009 5:22PM
There are at least three of these on the Horde AH on my realm at any given moment, usually priced around 1800-2500g. The things I'd do for a world drop that sold for that kind of dough...

I've never had one drop for me. But my significant other had one drop in a H Gun'drak run. She won it and asked me if it was an upgrade. I told her it was a major upgrade. She didn't bat an eyelash at passing it my way. Suffice to say I love that woman and she loves me hehe

a guy in my guild gave me this sword for my DK when i was dual wielding before the killing machine nerf, it was/is great. unfortunately that nerf pushed 2h weapons up to higher dps than DW and this just gathers dust in my bags.

I came close to buying one of these, but they're a minimum of 3,000g, up to around a buyout of 5,000g on my realm. Still tempting.

I have this weapon on my OH with Berserking (http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Runetotem&n=Redcoat for verification). It dropped for me off of trash in REGULAR Culling of Stratholme, so the data that it drops from heroics and raids is incomplete. It will drop from regular level 80 instances as well as heroics and raids.

It can drop from anywhere in the world in Wrath...

Totally neglecting that it's a great pre-raid weapon for DW DKs. Given that the strong competition for it comes in terms of tank weapons (Last Laugh is best in-slot, Red Sword of Courage is a great pre-raid option) and Grasscutter is offhand only, if you're rich it doesn't make a bad start at 80.
Soulbento Feb 6th 2009 6:06PM
Same model as the Blade of Twisted Visions I was slingin' around pre-Wrath.
SilverPlague Feb 6th 2009 8:56PM
Currently my offhand on my Rogue and I love it, got it off AH for 1800g, unfortunately there is a downside of everyone I group with asking me where I got it.
Balius Feb 7th 2009 6:29PM
"It dropped off the last boss in Wailing Caverns when I was running a guildy. Totally floored me, I'm glad I won the roll."
That is my answer whenever anyone asks me where I got something.
MusedMoose Feb 6th 2009 8:52PM
Well, it sure as hell ain't a Sword of Tonic.
jaxson_bateman Feb 6th 2009 10:42PM
I might be mistaken, but AFAIK every rogue worth their salt is Mutilate spec'd atm for PvE. I can't see why you'd go with swords when you can put out more dps with rare daggers. Hunters are more likely to dual wield given that their melee weapons are just stat sticks, but they too tend to get bigger boosts from 2Hers.
I'm unfamiliar with the itemisation DKs are looking for, but I dare say this would only be a significantly good weap for a dual wielding death knight - provided they want a fast off hand.

I actually looted it in the frozen lake outside the Sons of Hodir area. It dropped from the elemental there and I was able to sell it to a hunter for 4000g after about a week I think.
Rugus Feb 7th 2009 4:32AM
For dual wielders who just look for stats (hunters...) this one is a very good alternative:
Fang of Truth

In terms of pure stats it's close to Jin and costs *A LOT* less (some gold and some rep). Not an epic but stats are very close. Imho Jin is too expensive for what it really offers.
Flec Feb 7th 2009 8:22AM
Got it while farming the ice elementals near the the Sons of Hodir town, Dun Nifflelem , and sold it to a near by rogue as soon as it dropped :D 1750g a little discount but what can i say the RNG seems to favor the bored :P
