The OverAchiever: 100 Mounts Achievements
Every week The Overachiever gives advice, walkthroughs and guides on completing your latest Achievement obsession.
Yes, that's right. You better start looking at ranch property because you have 100 mounts to collect. Here's the series of Achievements involved:
Resources and advice after the jump!
I was going to compile a list of all the mounts available in the game and then categorize them by group for you to pick and choose which mounts of the 100+ available were the best for you to pursue. But a little Googling showed me that this has already been done. So here are some excellent lists for you to read to plan which mounts you are going to go after:
And for tracking your current mounts, I can't more highly recommend Bennlinger's WoW Mount Check List.
The lists generally break down like this:
Faction mounts
There's your racial mounts (remember, you can buy more than one) and the mounts of the other races in your faction. Take advantage of the Lunar Festival to help you grind to Exalted with the other racial factions, as each Elder you talk to gives you +75 faction across all of them. Bonus, as of Patch 3.0.8 you can actually ride the mounts of other races as well. You can also do the quests in the starter zones of each race to gain faction with that area's capital as well.
Then there are the Burning Crusade faction mounts:
PvP Mounts
There are 5 mounts from Alterac Valley, Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin tokens, 2 from AV tokens, 2 from Nagrand's Halaa tokens and 1 from Wintergrasp. You can probably snag these if you are an avid PvP'er as they are still available. The flying mounts from winning each season are retired.
Crafted Mounts
Mostly restricted to the crafters that make them. Tailors have two versions of their flying carpets. Engineers have their two flying machines and their chopper that non-engineers can ride (Mechano-hog/Mekgineer's Chopper). You can buy one off the AH or commission one from an Engineer. Either way, you're looking at 16k gold.
TCG Mounts
There are five of these, but you are looking at laying out actual cash to get your hands on them. Fortunately, you can avoid them entirely.
Achievement Mounts
The proto-drakes are very involved to acquire, but I'm listing them here because, hey, it's a column about Achievements, right?
The two class mounts for Warlocks, Paladins and Death Knights count toward the total for this achievement. You will have to quest for them still. Sorry Druids, flight form doesn't count.
Dropped Mounts
These are an option, but you are facing the random number generator and we all know how that goes. Fortunately, there are good twenty to go after. And I hear the Baron is bit more generous than the days when we used to take down for his pants.
Seasonal Event Mounts
There's the Brewfest Ram/Kodo and the Hallow's End dreadsteed. If you don't want to wait until October to finish this Achievement, you may want to skip these. The temporary Flying Broom won't count.
Specialty Mounts
The Swife Zhevra mount from recruit a friend and the polar bear from the BlizzCon '08 card will also count.
To sum it up, work on your faction mounts from vanilla WoW, Burning Cursade and Wrath while mixing in runs for dropped mounts and consider PvP and Crafted options.
NEXT WEEK: Love is in the Air Achievements (A/H)

- Netherwing
- Cenarion Expedition
- Sha'tari Skyguard
- Wyrmrest Accord
- Sons of Hodir
- Kirin Tor (no faction necesarry for these mounts, just gold)

There are 5 mounts from Alterac Valley, Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin tokens, 2 from AV tokens, 2 from Nagrand's Halaa tokens and 1 from Wintergrasp. You can probably snag these if you are an avid PvP'er as they are still available. The flying mounts from winning each season are retired.

Achievement Mounts
The proto-drakes are very involved to acquire, but I'm listing them here because, hey, it's a column about Achievements, right?
- The Albino Drake mount for the 50 Mounts Achievement counts as your 51st.
- The Black War Bear is the reward for the Achievement killing the opposite faction's leaders (For the Horde/For the Alliance). Now is a good time to do this since you need to get into the capital cities for the Lunar Festival Achievement before the 14th.
- Ain't no one getting the Violet Proto-drake until they've completed all the seasonal event Achivements including the Brew of the Year which doesn't finish until 12 months after it starts. So if you didn't pick it up last October, you won't be seeing this mount until Fall 2010.
- The Red Proto-drake is quite a beauty as well, but requires you to complete a couple dozen Heroic instance Achievements.
- The Plagued Proto-drake is another one that looks good on paper, but the Achievement involved requires you to defeat all the Wrath bosses the most difficult way possible, including this little gem.
- You think that one was tough? The Black Proto-drake is even more fun. Tackle the all the Wrath bosses, but on Heroic mode. Good times.
The two class mounts for Warlocks, Paladins and Death Knights count toward the total for this achievement. You will have to quest for them still. Sorry Druids, flight form doesn't count.

Nice write up on mounts -cheers - ill use this

For me, the Albino Drake was worth 50 mounts. I find myself struggling to even think about working towards 100 mounts. Honestly... I've never liked Dragonhawks much. If the 100 mount would have been an armored bat, or (dare i to even dream of such a mount) something like the Pterodax down in Un'goro crator... then you'd surely see me working my tail off for that thing. The Dragon hawks...eeehn... I want to like them for lore reasons, but graphic wise, I'd feel like I'm sitting on a flying kite. :/
Cyno Feb 6th 2009 8:48AM
The dragonhawk mounts are just too small, they look odd, especially since youre sitting on its head and not on its back.
Havnt really started on this one, but im at 67 mounts at the moment, just from NR ones and finishing up Skyguard even after id gotten my albino drake.
Need 14 more non-combat pets for the other one, i dont know where im gonna get those...
Viper007Bond Feb 6th 2009 9:26AM
I'm with you. 50 wasn't difficult at all. I had it the day 3.0 came out.
100 however is looking to be terribly difficult and the reward isn't all that awesome.
I'll personally be waiting for more mounts to be added to the game before making a serious attempt at it.
Mitawa Feb 6th 2009 10:12AM
Lol, sitting on the dragonhawks looks ridiculous, especially for tauren (possibly draenei too?)
The thing can barely get it's beak out from between your knees and you rise/fall by about a yard every time it flaps.
Whenever I had to fly out to the Island of QD, I turned my monitor off till I landed and I zoomed all the way to 1st person mode for the dailies. O.o
hpavc Feb 6th 2009 9:01AM
280% dragon hawk, thats sort of lame giving up a 310% you already have for it.
Hakushi Feb 6th 2009 8:50AM
Don't forget about the Battle mounts from AQ40. With a small group, you can farm the trash in the first part of the instance, and the drop rate is pretty good. I went with 5 or so guildies and we picked up 7 or so (collectively) killing the trash to the first boss, and the respawns after we knocked out AQ20. Each color counts towards the total.
silverdragon Feb 6th 2009 9:43AM
There's AQ40 mounts? Wth have i been? i didnt know, lol.
Mitawa Feb 6th 2009 10:13AM
Yeah, mounts from AQ but they can only be used while you're in there.
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=15666
Is the one that I have.
Mitawa Feb 6th 2009 10:17AM
Forgot to add:
So far as I know, the AQ mounts do not count for the achievement. Or, I haven't counted mine and double checked. I'm just going by the comments on this achievement on Wowhead. ^^
silverdragon Feb 6th 2009 10:22AM
oh ok, kool thanks. i only ever did AQ once back in the day so i didnt know about these.
Hakushi Feb 6th 2009 10:35AM
@Mitawa: The AQ mounts to in fact count towards the total. At least, they count towards the 50 achievement. In the Wowhead comments, they are listed in the big list, and there is a comment down a little further from Druanna where they "confirm" it.
AyaJulia Feb 6th 2009 1:02PM
Just chiming in to confirm first-hand, not from a comment someone left on a page some amount of time ago, that the AQ40 mounts do count. I was sitting at 49/50 for a few days before I put the husband in a headlock and forced him to come farm one with me. :) Got the achievement right there standing in AQ when I learned my new blue bug.
zweitblom Feb 6th 2009 8:53AM
Alliance can also get the Winterspring Frostsaber. Yes, the grind is insane, but so is going for this achievement, probably *smiles*
ROB13 Feb 6th 2009 8:57AM
Why does Red Proto Drake link to Goblin Land Mine?
Other then that, I only have 10 mounts because I am not much of a mount farmer =(
Will Feb 6th 2009 9:02AM
The 100 Mount Achievement is separated into Horde and Alliance rewards due to racial mounts making for different requirements.
How does the racial mount requirement change anything? That was removed in 3.0.8, and regardless, the criteria is identical for both factions. The reason there are two achievements is that Horde wouldn't be caught dead on a blue dragonhawk. :P
their loss, I guess...
ambient Feb 6th 2009 9:11AM
I agree with you that the quoted sentence makes no sense at all. But I don't wanna hear your snark about blue dragonhawks, you Alli! The Horde get shafted by having FOUR fewer of the easily available (and uber cheap!) racial faction mounts. I would love it if there were two separate achievements because ours required a handful less to get the gift mount. As a Horde non-pally/warlock/DK/engineer/tailor, I've got a crapton of work to do...
Unknown Feb 6th 2009 9:29AM
Ugh, I imagine that's rough :( I'm an engineer and I already have two of the three Brewfest mounts, and I got my Albino Drake without having Gnomeregan or Netherwing to Exalted, and I'm still missing many of the PvP mounts, including the two from Halaa, and lots of the Northrend achievement drakes. I'll be "sort of" going for this one along with the minipet (at 46/50 for the skunk but that's just me being lazy :P) but honestly I'll probably be farming titles for a bit longer and busting my butt over Valentine's.
Gimia Feb 6th 2009 4:03PM
"Racial restrictions" means horde or alliance only mounts such as the ones gained from PvP vendors or the city vendors. It has nothing to do with the specific races being able to ride it or not (which was removed, like you said).
sephirah Feb 6th 2009 9:08AM
Shouldn't dragonhawk be horde only?
