Breakfast Topic: Gender bender

So we had essentially the same roster of raiders, except that this time, they were females. And all of these players were male. I haven't met anyone yet who's paid to change from female to male, although I'm sure there are more than a few out there. My wife couldn't bear the thought of changing her characters' gender -- she identified with them too much. I feel the same way about my characters, too, so they're staying male. For now, anyway. A month and change after the feature was introduced, do you know anyone who has gone for a character overhaul? Have you taken advantage of this feature? Would you? If yes, what would you change?

I changed my night elf female rogue to male just last week! So I'm one of the femala to male dudes. Why? Well, I was starting to realize than male NE's just look plain awesome mainly because of the size of their shoulders.
Having played male NE for a week though, I'm starting to see why I chose a female in the first place... Everything else is just cool about them, especially the animations when they attack. So maybe I'll be paying again to reverse my decision.
My name is Nibu, so that works for both male and female. I wonder about your friends though? If they all changed to female, but kept the name, won't some of them have odd name? ^_^
Eversor Feb 7th 2009 8:11AM
Male NE's are never ever awesome. Their model sucks, their animations are rubbish, they are just awful. You will go back, because a bouncy cheerleader is lesser of the two evils when choosing a NE.
Anaughtybear Feb 7th 2009 8:27AM
I agree with Eversor. Nelf males are hideous. They look like even less work went into them than trolls or tauren cat form. Nelf males also have the most noticeably nonexistent crotch. I guess they reproduce asexually.

I play a male night elf druid, and I absolutely hate the male NE model. However, I have no plans to change him to a her.
I really hope that after Blizzard overhauls the druid models, they do something for male night elves. Actually, most of the character models could use some improvement to be honest.
Psy Feb 7th 2009 8:34AM
@Eversor: You might think they suck but many other people don't. If this guy wants a male Night Elf he can have a male Night Elf.
Besides, male Night Elves look much better than male Blood Elves (I'd rather a BE female over a NE female though, they don't look as slutty IMO, seriously wtf is up with the NE female /dance emote?).
I mean, who would want to play an obviously gender-confused male Blood Elf? Are they even males? Or are they just females with a crappy voiceover?
JuicedCardinal Feb 7th 2009 9:41AM
@Psy:
Gender confused or no, I play a male Blood Elf Paladin. There's no other paladins Horde-side, of course, so I must play a Blood Elf, and I choose not to play as a female because I don't wear people's skin and tuck it in, pretending to be another gender.
Besides, male BElf attack animations are better than females, imo.

Protip, hon, whining about blood elves stopped being cool in like, 2006. Get the eff over yourself.

@Psy
You are just jealous because BE males are so much prettier than you are. I seriously believe that. My main would be one of them if I had started out with Burning Crusade installed.

"I don't wear people's skin and tuck it in"
That is quite possibly the creepiest thing I have *ever* heard on WOW Insider.
jbodar Feb 7th 2009 1:33PM
NE Male still > Human Male
Trust me, I have both
Spoonman Feb 7th 2009 2:18PM
I totally agree with Eversor, I unfortunately have a NE male priest and I would love to turn him into a Human male, but the sex change isn't that appealing
Seedcake Feb 7th 2009 7:37PM
@juiced: Why do you think that controlling a gendered, 3D avatar comes anywhere close to "pretending to be another gender"? Perhaps you're identifying a little too much with the fake person on the screen?
Believe it or not, there are plenty of players who are secure enough in themselves (or who grasp that WoW is a *game* and not a 3D dating service) that they can play any gender of pixel person and not feel that they're actually trying to BE that gender.
Then again, though, there was that time back in 1983 when I thought I was a genderless white rectangle...but then my parents made me put down the Pong and go outside.
Phaelan Feb 7th 2009 8:28AM
i haven't used it yet, but i'm contemplating changing my female Troll Priest to a Male. I'd also change the name too.
Mirhawk Feb 7th 2009 8:31AM
I used this service for one of my alts, mainly to simply try it out. My man characters are male as that feels more natural for me as a guy, but some of my alts are female and I have no problem with that. I can see people that has a similar view to me wanting to use this service if one of the alts they created turned out to become their main character because they liked the class more then their thought or for whatever other reason. I might even use this service again in the future if I start playing one of my alts more then i first intended to.
And I don't mind a paid service like this. As long as I don't see any way to spend real money to buy epics or anything else that give you an advantage in game. Something like this should probably even be mandatory for a game like this for the reason stated above and simply because its a nice service.
(I love the Dr.Hell reference by the way)
Mirhawk Feb 7th 2009 8:33AM
Self correction, thats Baron Ashura. I haven't watched Mazinger Z in a while.
SaintStryfe Feb 7th 2009 8:33AM
I'd never change. Draenei males are one of the uglier races in the game, while I think my Draenei female is one of the nicest looking. Beside, it's fun to tease the people who get hung up on who's behind the computer.
I had this lowbie whom I helped out a few weeks ago, and he asked if I could help him and a friend though ZF. The friend just got completely hung up on if I was male or female. I got tired of it so I brought my female roomate in, had her speak into vent (I typed into a word document what she should say, told them it was vent lag, he bought it). It's become a game. Maybe when he hits 80 I'll tell him the truth.
....
naw.
kalatash Feb 7th 2009 12:35PM
That is awesome.
Seedcake Feb 7th 2009 7:51PM
Hahah, I do that sort of thing too. It's really fascinating to me when people care SO much about the real gender of the player behind the avatar. It's like...why do they care? What's *their* motive that they absolutely NEED TO KNOW?
Invariably it turns out to be adolescent or young adult heterosexual males who have incredible anxiety about inadvertently flirting with a RL guy behind that female avatar.
Again, to these people: MMOs are games and not dating services! Go out in the real world to find real love! :)
SaintStryfe Feb 7th 2009 9:59PM
Seedcake: hehe, exactly. Personally, I'm not of the heterosexual persuasion, so it boggles me why people are so scared of sending signals onto or getting a pass from a person of the same gender. I try to make it a mild learning experience - that there a lot of different kinds of people. It's shocking how few younger people get that lesson at home. Also, that getting a pass is not a threat to your sexuality, and you shouldn't take it as such. There are such horrible stories of kids doing horrible violence to other children who are seen as to be gay. Of course, social conservatives just pitch a fit and cry indoctrination for teaching how not to hate... sigh, foolish people. But I won't veer further into that in this forum.
I will take a point with your final words: people can find fantastic relationships online, even in games like WoW. I have a friend who met her SO through WoW, and I think they're on course to be married soon (I hope to the Gods she doesn't read this site...). They're local. and by chance met online, so that helped, but how they met stands.
Seedcake Feb 8th 2009 12:35AM
@saintstryfe
It's fine if people want to make connections through an online venue (I've done so a couple times myself (not through WoW)), but honestly I cringe whenever I come across players who seem only to be able to relate to other people based on their gender, like they're governed by some sort of caveman flow-chart.
1) Do you see a player? YES/NO
2) If NO, go to 1. If YES, go to 3.
3) Is player female? If NO, say "Hey bro" and show off gear. Is player female? If YES, immediately begin flirting. If UNSURE, go to 4.
4) Commence gradual but steady wheedling questions until player confirms gender or becomes creeped out and leaves. Is player female? If YES, commence flirting. Is player male? If YES, say "''Sup dude" and show off gear.
5) Go to 1.
It's just...the ulterior motive grosses me out. >_< I'm here to play a game, not because I desperately desire to be someone's E-girlfriend, y'know? If I wanted that, I'd be hanging out at eHarmony or some such place.
Anyway, cheers. :)
