When AFK attacks redux

One day, though, he got lucky and finally spotted the fantastic creature... except that it was already tagged by a Gnome Death Knight. Instinctively, he did what any red-blooded member of the Horde would do. He Mind Controlled the Gnome, used him to tank the drake, and when the drake was low on life, tossed the Death Knight off the edge of a cliff. One Shadow Word: Death and a hearthstone later, the priest was in Krasus' Landing sitting atop his pretty green drake.
Unlike the unlucky but restrained Orc that Matt's wife encountered, however, you can just imagine the rage of the unfortunate Death Knight. With the rarity of the Time-Lost Proto Drake, rumored to have a long respawn timer and known to blink across the map, it was like winning the lottery and getting held up on the way to the bank. But see, we play on a PvP server. Flares and unintelligible emotes are the least of anyone's worries. It's an environment where players will kill for something as simple as a mining node or an herb. Heck, players don't even need a reason.
I'm not sure I'd have done the same thing myself. It's hard to say. Was it an incredibly rude thing to do? Oh, absolutely. Was it cruel considering the Death Knight had probably been on a similar month-long search? Definitely. These were the questions that popped into my head when I heard the tale. In the end, I told myself that it was the only thing to do. PvP server + opposite faction + extremely rare mob = everything is fair game. I had nothing to do with it, but I found myself sympathizing with the Death Knight. That sentiment lasted for all of two seconds, though. I mean, come on. It was a gnome.

Doesn't the PVP trinket break mind control?
Gnosh Feb 9th 2009 2:06PM
not if you don't have it equipped it doesn't.
I literally feel no sympathy for the alliance guy.
You rolled a gnome, prepare to be treated like one.
Matchu Feb 9th 2009 2:09PM
If you're playing on a PVP server, tracking a rare spawn in a packed zone and don't have your trinket on....well you deserve it.
laughingman Feb 9th 2009 2:20PM
you should always have your pvp gear on when on a pvp server. sure you kill a little slower, but its always nice to be prepared.
BigBiker05 Feb 9th 2009 3:45PM
I never take off my PvP gear unless I'm in an instance. Its just stupid.

Being a long time Alliance player - I would normally say "cheap but I would have done the same".
Not this time though.
Gnome + Death Night = you fail.
It's the Alliance equivalent of a Blood Elf DK. I kill on sight. I expect Horde to KoS any Gnome DKs the same way.
Grats on the mount. I'd rather a Forsaken Priest get it than a Gnome DK anyday.
For the record - I generally KoS anything that isn't Forsaken - The only race I have respect for.

"I literally feel no sympathy for the alliance guy.

Okay, THAT made me laugh.
I suddenly remembered the Oxhorn Gnome punting video and the image of that and the DK being launched off a cliff while the players was likely sputtering pure rage at their monitor was too much.
If I had a priest on a PVP server with that situation, I likely would have done it too. Especially with a gnome...

"One Shadow Word: Death and a hearthstone later, the priest was in Krasus' Landing sitting atop his pretty YELLOW drake."
... If getting the green Proto-Drake was as much of a crapshoot as finding the Time-Lost Drake I'd never even attempt to try the Oracle-egg lottery.

That you chucked the gnome off a cliff makes me so happy... feel warm inside, is this joy?
I would have done this and given thanks to the Respawn Gods for my good fortune.

Only one appropriate commenmt to this:
pwned.
VSUReaper Feb 9th 2009 2:19PM
Exactly. I love it when people underestimate people.
I was on my 75 priest last night in Fjord when a warrior from out of nowhere (dismounted in mid-air and charged me from 25 yds above) I feared, he zerker raged, I kited him towards those giant elites and then MC'd him right to it. 3 hits later, I was running out of the giants range, knowing that I had just pwn'd a 80 warrior with out even trying hard.
As for the drake story: PVP on a PVP server? ZOMG! I have killed people for merely not making thier gear match (think t5 priest mixed with S2.... its just ugly!) So for a rare mob, hell yeah. The gnome is lucky he wasnt camped.
Falcom Feb 9th 2009 4:19PM
or...
Gnomed.
Mallistar Feb 9th 2009 2:09PM
That's awful - just awful. The DK should sue your guildie.
Oh, that's right, it's a game, which makes this funny, and the Gnome S.O.L.
Tiis Feb 9th 2009 2:09PM
Wow, that's an amazingly harsh thing to do.
I love mind control.
Worcester Feb 9th 2009 2:42PM
I love the fact that the Shadow Priest used his abilities in a creative way. With all the focus on pure DPS and so many classes seeming grossly overpowered, it's refreshing to see the little guy come up big. Even if, in this case, the "little guy" was significantly bigger than the "big guy."
It's been so long since I bothered with a PvE server. Do you have to flag yourself in a contested area? I thought PvE servers only protected your character in Friendly territory. Maybe that's my server. I don't know. Even my Bank Alts are flagged for PvP. All's fair in my book.
Arashikou Feb 9th 2009 5:08PM
For the record, it's PvP servers where you're only protected in friendly zones. (And Sanctuaries, which are essentially just zones that are friendly to everyone.)
On PvE servers, you are only flagged PvP if you enter a PvP area, (battleground, arena, free-for-all arena like in STV, or Lake Wintergrasp) enter an enemy capital city, or perform a "PvP action" like healing or attacking a PvP player or NPC. During normal questing, you are always protected by the warm, loving bosom of Blizzard.
NekoAli Feb 9th 2009 2:10PM
And this is the sentiment that keeps me from playing on a PVP server. That if they are the opposite faction, it's perfectly acceptable to do anything to a person, because their wants and wishes don't mean anything.
Stealing a rare spawn out from under a person. Camping someone who can't possibly fight back or get away from you until they log off. Killing them over minor little things or nothing at all. Just generally being a jerk. Sorry, PVP flag isn't a free for all excuse to treat people like dirt.
Moody Loner Feb 9th 2009 2:15PM
This.
Yes, it was a PvP server. Yes, it's all part of the game.
But, every day I hear a story that makes me thank God I decided to stick with a PvE server. And this is today's.
RogueJedi86 Feb 9th 2009 2:15PM
Yes it is. Blizzard has a hands-off approach to pvp servers. If you're being camped, bring friends to help you. If you don't have friends, you're playing the wrong game. Some of us like the danger and risk of knowing you could die at any moment. Kill or be killed. If you don't want to ever worry about risk, stay in the local capital city and never advance beyond level 1.
