When AFK attacks redux

One day, though, he got lucky and finally spotted the fantastic creature... except that it was already tagged by a Gnome Death Knight. Instinctively, he did what any red-blooded member of the Horde would do. He Mind Controlled the Gnome, used him to tank the drake, and when the drake was low on life, tossed the Death Knight off the edge of a cliff. One Shadow Word: Death and a hearthstone later, the priest was in Krasus' Landing sitting atop his pretty green drake.
Unlike the unlucky but restrained Orc that Matt's wife encountered, however, you can just imagine the rage of the unfortunate Death Knight. With the rarity of the Time-Lost Proto Drake, rumored to have a long respawn timer and known to blink across the map, it was like winning the lottery and getting held up on the way to the bank. But see, we play on a PvP server. Flares and unintelligible emotes are the least of anyone's worries. It's an environment where players will kill for something as simple as a mining node or an herb. Heck, players don't even need a reason.
I'm not sure I'd have done the same thing myself. It's hard to say. Was it an incredibly rude thing to do? Oh, absolutely. Was it cruel considering the Death Knight had probably been on a similar month-long search? Definitely. These were the questions that popped into my head when I heard the tale. In the end, I told myself that it was the only thing to do. PvP server + opposite faction + extremely rare mob = everything is fair game. I had nothing to do with it, but I found myself sympathizing with the Death Knight. That sentiment lasted for all of two seconds, though. I mean, come on. It was a gnome.

Actually Ive been on both sides of the fence. My first toon, and exposure to Warcraft in general, was a rogue I leveled up to 60 (pre-BC) on Bleeding Hollow. Ive been the victim of plenty of ganking/camping and, as a rogue, done my fair share.
Dysmorphia Feb 9th 2009 8:05PM
That's so cruel and horrid and dastardly it's a freaking work of ART. /salute
If the gnome has any sense or friends, that spriest is now going to be KoS for everyone and their aunt on the alliance side. And if he has any gold he should offer a bounty on the forums, too.
Betrayal, revenge and holding onto grudges are part of the pleasure of being on a PvP server.

I think that this "PVP on a PVP Server" example isn't the same as what most people think of when they say so...
Yes, on a PVP server you can 1shot lowbies, camp corpses, etc...
I do not believe that such behavior is "World PVP". That is more akin to "being a jerk".
"Red is Dead" is a stupid ideology and tends to make the game less fun for people who are still leveling.
Now... don't get me wrong, i'm not a carebear, and I roll exclusively on PVP servers.
When I see someone of similar level to myself, I'll kill the crap outta them. If they want to come back for round two, i'll kill em again if they want. If I get ganked by a similar level character, i'll consider my chances for winning and either flee or counterattack.
I watch my back... I hide when I spot someone who I don't think I could beat. If its lvl is skull, I ignore them... if they wanna kill me I res and continue to ignore them... if they kill me again... i log and bring my main... they quickly leave my zone when they realize its no fun being camped and I go back to lvling.
I NEVER bring the main to fight my lowbies battles unless the opponent is skull. If another lowbie wants to camp my corpse... I'll just log and play another lowbie... grats on wasting your time.
But, when I'm running through some random lowbie contested zone on my 80 and I see a lvl 24 hunter, I'll wave and go on my way... If he's dumb enough to sick his pet on me, i'll 1shot him and hope he learns, but if he ignores me, i'll let him live.
-----
this specific example, this is World PVP! Awesome!
The spriest did a great job defeating his opponent and winning his prize... sure it sucked for the gnome... but many posts have said it... he wasn't prepared... hopefully he'll try to stay more aware of his surroundings and carry his PVP trink with him when doing such delicate work.
The suggestions of camping the corpse... taunting him by flying the mount around him... thats not world pvp, thats "being a jerk". I'm glad the spriest took the high road and didn't ruin this story.

I couldn't agree more. Being on a PvP server is not free license to behave like a sociopathic idiot. Sure, Blizzard does not enforce behavior and you are not limited in how you approach combat with the opposite faction. But, as you are what you eat, you are as you play.
I have always played on PvP and I always will, but I will not stoop to ganking lowbs just because I can, any more than I will stand dancing naked in the AH. I would probably have stopped to help the DK on the grounds of fair is fair, but I do not inherently expect other people to do the same. The reason I like PvP is that you do have to make choices, and you do have to be prepared.
At the same time, comments like "he rolled a gnome, he deserves it" are appalling. Conduct in game IS a reflection of who you are IRL. There is an inherent tendency in humans to divide the world in to Us and Them, and this game gives you a chance to play out the effects of that division. But, prejudice is still prejudice.

Good on the Priest !
There's no point of getting angry - get even, I'd say !
For those of you thinking this is hardcore - you should see what Goon Swarm had done to Band of Brothers:

Now, that's hardcore !
Ezzy Feb 9th 2009 3:22PM
Since it is such a camped spawn, the gnome should have known to wear his trinket.
I am kind of a carebear, even though I am on a pvp server, but I would have done this in a heartbeat. At least it wasn't a story about a horde rogue gathering mobs and then vanishing on a fellow horde while they were fighting the rare mob causing them to die. Now thats douchebaggery.
Croe Feb 9th 2009 3:27PM
Wouldn't it be a cool addition if you could put a bounty on someone on a PvP server? Some high level ganks you? Put a bounty on their head. It would certainly bring another dimension to the game.
Aykwa Feb 9th 2009 4:04PM
That would rock. And if next to the player's name you could see whether or not there was a bounty, and maybe even how big it is, that would be even better. They could even allow your own faction to put a bounty on you. That way you can get back at rude or annoying players on your own side. What's more, all bounties on a single player, regardless of how many people put that bounty out, would all stack. They could even have one-time bounties (which would tend to be larger) and recurring bounties (which would tend to be smaller). And to add to the feel of being really hunted, anyone with a bounty could be shown (or filtered out) on any player's map. I can think of a number of jerks and ninjas on my server that I would LOVE to post recurring permanent bounties on.

@ Aykwa
How 'bout a big red + symbol at the start and end of their name?
Noel McLeod Feb 9th 2009 3:30PM
Obviously, that's why you play Horde. A DECENT human being wouldn't have done that. (You can tell I don't play Horde, mostly because I can't role play being a b***tard).
Karilyn Feb 9th 2009 3:38PM
So question...
You say you can't roleplay being a b***tard... so, when you are being a b***tard right now, it's not roleplaying, it's simply who you are in real life?
Good to know. I'll make sure to stay away from you in real life.
Taladan Feb 9th 2009 4:57PM
Key word here is "role play". You're a carebear.
We don't role play in PvP servers. The DK could be doing anything else and still he should expect that something like that would happen.
For example, I was doing the daily Argent Crusade daily (that awful alchemist apprentice one) and two ret pallies attack me (even being 4 levels below me.) Now, that's OBVIOUSLY a questing area and still they attack me, without provocation. Had to gank both, twice, before they managed to put me down, but they ruined my daily 'cause I lost time doing that and I couldn't finish on time.
And I'm horde.
Taladan Feb 9th 2009 5:08PM
Yet another, then. I was helping a friend with The Plume of Alystros quest. I was tanking Alystros, even being a holy paly. I was constantly letting my health drop below 50% 'cause, to be honest, it isn't hard to tank when you're 80.
One of these times, a DK, out of nowhere, comes and attack me. When I realize what was going on, I fully recovered and went after this butt, even with Alystros after me.
That's not the first time. Alliance constantly waits till you're engaged with mobs and then attack. They never want a clean flight, they always wait till you're weak to attack. Which fits quite perfectly in your "b***tard" definition. So, to me, the real b***tard play alliance.

Misery's The River of the World by Tom Waits:
"All the good in the world
You can put inside a thimble
And still have room for you and me
If there's one thing you can say
About Mankind
There's nothing kind about man"
...I xferred back to a PvE server to be with a particular guild but when I was on a PvP server sometimes I would attack an enemy faction character for no reason at all. I never camped people because I wouldn't want to be camped. But if I was competing for a mob, in a bad mood, annoyed at seeing a BELF ret paladin with an s2 weapon, or if I had been attacked by horde sometimes I would just kill anything red for awhile. If I was hunting this mob and found somebody else had tagged it would definitely fight them for it.

Tell your guildie he's an asshole, AND a punk:
"One Shadow Word: Death and a hearthstone later, the priest was in Krasus' Landing sitting atop his pretty green drake."
This PROVES that your guildie is a punk. Otherwise he wouldn't have pulled that dick-move and then hearthed back into a sanctuary city before the DK had a chance to ROFL stomp him into the ground.
"Look at me! I'm going to 'cheap shot' some guy and then giggle-hearth so I can tell my buddies about it. That's like those suburban guys that yell obscenities at people on the street out of moving vehicles. There's a word for people like that:...wait, do you smell that???
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_dmusic?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music&field-keywords=g-unit+i+smell&x=0&y=0
Yeah, that's what I thought it was. Tell him to enjoy his Drake. If he flys fast enough, he might be able to outrun the smell...temporarily.
PeeDub Feb 9th 2009 3:58PM
Totally disagree.
If the gnome wants revenge, he's got to be prepared to put in the work. He doesn't get a free shot just because he pops gnome rage.
Pope Jamal Feb 9th 2009 5:57PM
"If the gnome wants revenge, he's got to be prepared to put in the work. He doesn't get a free shot just because he pops gnome rage."
You can't defend running from a 1-on-1 fight in a PVP situation YOU started. Full stop.
If you run from a situation like that, that further PROVES that the given Amazon link applies. Apparently to you as well.
Why would you be afraid of a gnome anyway, right? I know I wouldn't be, so that must be a "you" thing.
You just know that the guy would be justified in trying to "pay you back" and you also know that you probably have a better than even chance of getting "served" so that's why you defend the whole "gank-hearth" strategy.
Is that you Irv??
