Shifting Perspectives: Gearing your Feral (bear) Druid at 80, part 3
BELT
Best overall: Sharp-Barbed Leather Belt, off Ingvar the Plunderer in heroic Utgarde Keep. Trollwoven Girdle is very close to Sharp-Barbed stats-wise and easy to get made. Jorach's Crocolisk-Skin Belt is also pretty close but not, in my opinion, worth shelling out 40 emblems if you can get Trollwoven. These three pieces are way better than anything else you can put in this slot barring the Deadly Gladiator's Belt of Triumph, so at the very least count on having Trollwoven made if you can't get Sharp-Barbed to drop.
Best drop: Batrider's Cord off Trollgore in heroic Drak'tharon Keep.
Best quest piece: Honestly, there's not much here. The best I could find was Strange Voodoo Belt, from the quest Gal'darah Must Pay in Gun'drak.
Best faction piece: Glitterscale Wrap, available at revered with the Oracles.
Runner-up: Yet another Oculus BoE shows up in this slot, the Ley-Whelphide Belt. Other BoE's include Eviscerator's Waistguard, a Leatherworking BoE, and Treasure Seeker's Belt, a heroic Azjol-Nerub BoE, although Treasure Seeker's agility is a little low for my taste.
Enchant: Not an enchant as such, but you'll want to add another socket with an Eternal Belt Buckle.
PANTS
Best overall: Savage Gladiator's Dragonhide Legguards, available for 60,000 honor or 45 emblems of heroism.
Best drop: Legguards of Swarming Attacks off Amanitar in heroic Ahn'kahet, or Ravenous Leggings of the Furbolg off Gortok Palehoof in heroic Utgarde Pinnacle.
Best quest piece: As with the belt slot, there's not much here, but Tattooed Deerskin Leggings from the fairly early quest Containment in Violet Hold are the best you'll get from questing.
Best faction piece: Mind-Expanding Leggings, available at revered with the Kirin Tor. If you don't have the necessary rep for these but the Frenzyheart like you just fine, try the Azure Strappy Pants, available at revered with them.
Runner-up: Gored Hide Legguards off Gal'darah in heroic Gun'drak. Gored Hide, Mind-Expanding Leggings, Legguards of Swarming Attacks, and Ravenous Leggings are pretty close to each other once socketed and enchanted, just FYI. If your loot luck is even worse than mine and all of the game's factions hate you, fall back on Eviscerator's Legguards, a Leatherworking BoE, or Chain Gang Legguards, a BoE trash drop from heroic Violet Hold.
Enchant: Frosthide Leg Armor.
FEET
Best overall: Titan-forged Boots of Triumph, available for 15 Wintergrasp marks. /sigh.
Best drop: Slag Footguards, off Volkhan in heroic Halls of Lightning. Boots of the Whirling Mist off Sjonnir in heroic Halls of Stone are fairly similar but unfortunately lack a socket. Gorloc Muddy Footwraps off Eck the Ferocious in heroic Gun'drak are also usable, though not quite as good as Slag.
Best quest piece: Rhino Hide Kneeboots, from the quest One of a Kind in Gun'drak.
Best faction piece: Boots of the Neverending Path, available at exalted with the Argent Crusade. It's actually relatively tough to get +hit on bear-oriented gear and this has a ton of it.
Runner-up: Boots of Captain Ellis, available for 40 emblems.
Enchant: Most raiding bears swear by Tuskarr's Vitality, but you may want to use Enchant Boots - Superior Agility, Enchant Boots - Greater Fortitude, or Enchant Boots - Icewalker depending on your current gear set.

RINGS
Best overall: Keystone Great-Ring, from the Prophet Tharon'ja in heroic Drak'tharon Keep. This is really an excellent piece; try to get this if at all possible.
Best drop: Band of Torture, off Drakos the Interrogator in heroic Oculus, or Nerubian Shield Ring, off Elder Nadox in heroic Ahn'kahet.
Best quest piece: Iceforged Battle Ring, from the quest Forging the Keystone in Storm Peaks.
Best faction piece: n/a.
Runner-up: Titanium Earthguard Ring, a Jewelcrafting BoE, or Ring of Earthen Might, another Jewelcrafting BoE.
Enchant: If you're an Enchanter, you'll want Enchant Ring - Stamina.

TRINKETS
Best overall: Hands down it's Darkmoon Card: Greatness. You may very well go your entire span of time in Wrath without ever replacing this trinket for your avoidance set. Slit throats, break hearts, bribe everyone in sight, do whatever you have to do, but GET IT.
Best drop: Essence of Gossamer, off Hadronox in heroic Azjol-Nerub. Offering of Sacrifice, off Gal'darah in heroic Gun'drak, is no longer as good as it once was primarily because we don't get bonus AC from trinkets anymore and the proc isn't anywhere near as good as what you'd get on the Naxx-25 Defender's Code. Numbers-wise it's even inferior to Badge of Tenacity once the proc is taken into consideration, which is somewhat sad. Probably the piece of gear most affected by the 3.0.8 changes.
Best quest piece: Actually, I'm kind of stumped here. If you have a Badge of Tenacity and a Commendation of Kael'thas or Shard of Contempt coming into Wrath, you could theoretically go all the way to heroics at 80 without replacing either one. Thoughts?
Best faction piece: The only things available in this slot are the Oracle Talisman of Ablution and the Frenzyheart Insignia of Fury. Not really great, but I'm somewhat curious to see how the Oracle trinket will work in conjunction with the upcoming Savage Defense ability.
Runner-up: Valor Medal of the First War, available for 40 emblems of heroism, is excellent, and should probably be purchased no matter what for your avoidance set. Jewelcrafters will want to have a Figurine - Monarch Crab and a Figurine - Ruby Hare prepped; Alchemists will want an Indestructible Alchemist's Stone for their stamina set.

WEAPON
Before anyone else asks me, the best of the "new" tanking weapons now available to Druids is Inevitable Defeat, a rare BoP trash drop in Naxx-25, and the next best is Black Ice, off Malygos-10. However, before raids most of your best options are still going to be pieces that were Druid-specific pre-3.0.8 (and the best tanking weapon in the game remains Origin of Nightmares, which steadfastly refuses to drop for me in much the same manner that Pillar of Ferocity did).
Best overall: Even with the changes to AC from weapons and the new availability of polearms, you'll still want an Enraged Feral Staff off Ingvar the Plunderer in heroic Utgarde Keep.
Best drop: Staff of Trickery, off Cyanigosa in heroic Violet Hold. Your next option is Witch Doctor's Wildstaff off Slad'ran in normal Gun'drak.
Best quest piece: Eh. You'll find plenty of usable pieces while questing, but they all pale in comparison to what you can get in heroics.
Best faction piece: Stave of Shrouded Mysteries, available at revered with the Kirin Tor, or -- I cannot believe I am writing this -- Whale-Stick Harpoon, available at revered with the Kalu'ak.
Runner-up: Bloodwood Greatstaff is a rare world-drop BoE, but it suffers pretty badly from a lack of stats aside from 700 armor. The Savage and Hateful Gladiator's staves are very good (Hateful clocks in above Staff of Trickery but below Enraged Feral), and the Deadly Gladiator's Staff is now the second-best tanking staff in the game (much to my despair).
Enchant: Enchant Weapon - Mongoose is the way to go. Some still prefer the reliability of Enchant 2H Weapon - Major Agility, however, but both are going to become even less useful as time goes on and bear dodge approaches more diminishing returns on agility. I agree that axing Titanguard was ultimately a good idea, but it does kind of suck that we don't yet have a Wrath-level tanking enchant or idol.
Best overall: Sharp-Barbed Leather Belt, off Ingvar the Plunderer in heroic Utgarde Keep. Trollwoven Girdle is very close to Sharp-Barbed stats-wise and easy to get made. Very Nice list, shame it past me now, all epiced out :)
Can anyone point out anything I might be missing that I totally need to get/flaws in my talents? I know I'm missing Ring and Boots from Sapphron and Loatheb, but not sure if there is anything else I can get to improve my gear.

Thanks in Advanced :)

Hey Chaos - it looks like the EU Armory is down for the EU's Wednesday maintenance but I'll take a look as soon as I can!
Healingtank Feb 12th 2009 4:26AM
Just checked out your armory (Thursday morning) was kinda bored on skool so i though lets check and maybe help a fellow druid.
I have some items u can look for but mostly its luck u need 2 get them or emblems (heroism and Valor)
Wanna start with your Cloak, i see u using more of a DPS cloak then a tanking cloak like:
Durable Nerubhide Cloak: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=43565 (u can make it yourself as a LW)
Platinum Mesh Cloak: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40722 (bought with 25 Emblems of Valor)
Then the next one is your belt slot:
its a nice belt but as in the post by Allison Robert the best belt is still:
Sharp-Barbed Leather Belt: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37194 (drops from last boss in UK HC)
Ring and Boots u mentioned yourself so i'm not gonna spend words on that.
Last its your 2nd Trinket: Defender's Code.
Its made useless after 3.0.8 cuz of the not multiplying armor from trinkets rings and weapon.
There several trinkets u can use in that slot but it all depends on what u going for.
Myself i started off with getting average/high stamina gear with a decent amount of dodge (currently around 39% in bear totally unbuffed).
so i chose for:
Valor Medal of the First War: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40683 (84 dodge rating (2.13% on 80) with a use that grants u a other 335 dodge rating (8.51% on 80))
Atm i got what i want from the stamina/dodge gear so i'm gonna replace some items for hit and expertise items so i can get that capped with a nice amount of dodge and stamina left.
if u wanna do that u can better go for:
Grim Toll: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40256 (drops from Plague Quarter Naxx 25)
If u wanna go for Hit and Expertise cap socket as much as possible on expertise and hit and drop some stamina sockets.
GL with your gear and if u have any question u can find me on:
Realm: Karazhan
Name: Healingtank
btw here my armory:
link http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Karazhan&n=Healingtank
Gear is still on Stamina/Dodge but changing it when i have my set

Thank you very much! This list is very helpful. I'm off to get a whale-stick harpoon now :)
Darthregis Feb 11th 2009 9:33AM
Yeah, I was embarassed to have and go do that, too. It's one of the less pretty items, but it tends to be one of the better items to go into a heroic with.
jam Feb 10th 2009 9:43PM
"..but it does kind of suck that we don't yet have a Wrath-level tanking enchant or idol"
You could have mentioned Idol of Perspicacious Attacks.
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=38365
W01ph Feb 10th 2009 11:31PM
That idol is only good for additional threat gen, which as allison mentioned, isn't an issue til later on...
And Allison, I'm not even going to get started on the flaws in the spec you used in this post...
jam Feb 10th 2009 11:43PM
Absolutely nothing wrong with that spec. It's actually exactly the same spec I've used to tank everything from Maly to 3d Sarth and it works just beautifully. And having Shredding attacks and KotJ makes playing kitty when needed (or wanted) a lot more pleasent experience.
Allison Robert Feb 11th 2009 12:26AM
Perspicacious Attacks is fine for threat, but for raid tanking it's still inferior to Idol of Terror; we still don't have an idol that's really designed for a tank. The Terror proc is nowhere near as good at 80 as it was at 70, but it's still better than the threat boost to Mangle which frankly you shouldn't need even in a 10-man.
I've corrected the spec listed in the post (it should head to Wowhead now rather than MMO Champion). The one previously here is still pretty OK for raid tanking, but does depend on having a warrior doing Thunder Clap for you, which I don't like having to depend on.
Lukeyo Feb 10th 2009 11:23PM
Yep. Just me, my bear, and Idol of Terror. Still hangin' around at level 80. Sup.
Zainwolf Feb 11th 2009 1:21PM
You failed to mention how nice and relatively easy to get the Deadly Gladiator's Dragonhide chest and gloves are - heroic voa pugs go down weekly and it's rare to see one fail, the encounter is so easy... There's also heroes and valorous items that weren't mentioned as much as they should have been - the four set bonus for ferals is very nice for reducing incoming damage and they all have pretty good agi, sta and armor on them as well as sockets which many pieces you did mention lack.
Some pretty good tips in there generally speaking though...
Allison Robert Feb 11th 2009 12:39AM
Hey Zainwolf -- this gear guide assumes that you don't have access to 10-man or 25-man raid content and proceeds accordingly. While it's usually pretty easy to get Archavon pugs, I write these under the assumption that if you do have the chance to do Archavon regularly, any tier or PvP gear you get from these is gravy on top of the gear set you're *building* in order to raid.
sugg Feb 10th 2009 11:35PM
Yea Whens blizzard going to do something about the lack of no tankin idolsim still using the old badge of justice one i've yet to find anything that beats it
if anyone else can find anything better please help us out here :P
Athinah Feb 11th 2009 12:41AM
Has anyone else notice that feral druid tanks have to go to outland and back to get there tanking gear while most warrior gets there pre raid gear handed to them?
Buddermilk Feb 11th 2009 2:51AM
It's worth noting that the best for feet is actually Hateful Gladiator's Boots of Triumph. It has the same stats as the WG boots except it has crit in place of armor penetration. Considering Blizzard is going to give bears a shield when they crit it places the Hateful boots slightly ahead of the Titan-forged.
ejunk Feb 11th 2009 9:02AM
great list!
worth noting that Savage Gladiator gear can also be purchased from the "Apprentice Arena Vendor" using a combo of arena points and honor. and it's mega cheap.

ejunk Feb 11th 2009 9:06AM
posted this on the wrong page....
also... shouldn't the emblem belt be ranked higher than the trollwoven belt because it has a blue socket? you need two for the meta, after all.

Ralph@chezmelton.org Mar 5th 2009 7:30PM
Since the Boots of Captain Ellis require Emblems of Valor, I wouldn't really consider them pre-raid gear.
Darthregis Feb 11th 2009 9:38AM
Great article!
Seems I've got more farming of heroic Nexus and UK to do! I got the enraged feral staff and the belt dropped last night while I was on my mage (I'm still A N G R Y about that one).
It's nice that some of the better gear is available via the relatively easy heroics.
(And yeah, I hear ya about the LOLrus stick being a good item! Shocking, but at least it's hella easy to get!)
h8rain Feb 11th 2009 10:28AM
Wow. I never really sat down and shifted through what was available (just looked at AtlasLoot). I was disappointed at the lack of gear, but apparently I forgot about the PVP gear would be what I would use for tanking ( a PVE ONLY function). Which come to think of it, I fail. I used the s3 (I think) PVP chest for the latter part of BC.
Playing my feral druid just makes me angry (partly due to I can never win rolls on him, while my priest is rolling in loot). Maybe subconsciously I knew I would have to PVP again to get the gear I need for tanking raids. I will have to check out this guide again, when I get home, so I can what kind of honor/emblems/marks I have.
Is there any other class that a good portion of the best gear for PVE comes from PVP gear?
QQ rant over.
