The Queue: Engineering's BFG edition

Alex is out loading up his backpacks with all his gear, hopping on his Traveler's Tundra Mammoth and walking across Azeroth for a couple days. So until he's back to us full time I'm going to take a few more days this week of "Da Queue." Be sure to leave us your questions as a comment, or if you want to remain anonymous (because really, besides "Why can't Paladins tank?" there is no such thing as a dumb question) you can send us a tip on our tip line. Enough talk! Let us Queue!
Ava asked...
"Any word on when they're going to make engineers not useless in 3.1..."
Well... I gather the saving grace came today when Blizzard announced the removal of consumable ammunition won't be happening in 3.1. So you have a little longer to make things and sell them for a nice profit.
I think Engineering has always been a niche specialty. Obviously in BC it became a tad over powered with some of the helmets it could make, and of course there was the de-facto tanking gun up until the release of the Sunwell. Now it still has some of those features, but it's not as predominate as it once was.
But this is by design too.
Blizzard doesn't want the professions to be something that are so great they are essentially required for a given class. Remember Leatherworking in BC? Everyone who was a hard core Sunwell raider had to have Leatherworking for drums. It was really really really dumb to have Priests respec to Leatherworking just to get a continuous drum rotation going on. Blizzard knows this, and at BlizzCon last October Ghostcrawler made mention several times that they never want to return to that horror.
And truth be told, Engineering now is at least more useful/fun than it was four years ago.
Nicole asked...
"I've found that the Death Knight class is a fantastic way to explore the other faction and I was just wondering if you this was a popular thing to do?"
I really can't answer for other players, but I can defiantly speak for myself. I've got a 69 Blood Elf Death Knight that I've been having fun with now and then. All my mains are Alliance side (and yes, I've even got an Alliance Death Knight going on my second account), but my Hordie is quite fun to play.
I'm looking forward to running through the Wrath Gate quest line Horde side in a few levels, since I've done the Alliance one so many times now I practically have it memorized. It's also been fun to see the different angles on events as I leveled my way through Outland and into Northrend.
And with this answer, let me cue a Queue poll like Q...
| The same faction as most of my other characters | |
|---|---|
| A different faction than most of my other characters | |
| I've got a Death Knight in both factions |

Need an option for "Death Knight? I don't have no steenkin' Death Knight, I don't need no steenkin' Death Knight."
Also, one vote for that please.

This.

Fourthed.
I haven't made a DK either. Everyone else has one, I have no reason to make one just because it's different. If I rolled a class just because it's different, I'd have 10 characters right now, and not the 3 I'm comfortable with.

I have a DK made but not played, since I don't want to have too many alts going. Where's that option?
*grin*

It's well worth creating a Death Knight and at least playing through their starting zone. It's well done and interesting, even if you never play the character again after that.
Sean Riley Feb 10th 2009 10:54PM
Absolutely true. I've played through the DK starting area, just never gone much beyond it with a Death Knight. I'll stick to my rogue and my warrior.

Yeah I don't have a death knight either, I've tried it but their spells give me headaches, too flashy. I don't even like running with death knights if I can avoid it.

When I made my DK i had no intention of going past the beginning zone but i ended up leveling him to about 65. After that I went back to my shaman and got him up to 78 but then my account got hacked and I lost EVERYTHING. I decided that during the time blizzard was investigating before returning my stuff (which turned out to be 4 freaking weeks) to play my DK since the hacker left him alone. I ended up liking the DK so much that I made him my main... now my poor shaman sits at 79 waiting for me to return to him :(

Death Knight is great for getting all of the another faction's only cooking recipes for Chef de Cuisine achievement.

I only made a DK to experience the starting place and the quests there, then when I was done with that I level'd it up to 60 and made it my new bankchar.
Having a bankchar with cool gear, free bags and a 100% mount is nothing I'd say no to.

I tried a DK for a bit, and didn't particularly care for the combat mechanics. So I deleted him, and currently have no DK at all.
I'll go back later when I have a few hours to see the questline.

DK is good for gathering professions, imo:
1) you start aj 55, not that hard to get him to 80
2)you are ridiculously overpowered, so you're less likely to be ganked while farming
3)two actually useful professions for your main
AAhhzz Feb 11th 2009 5:49PM
Have both on different realms
I am finding the DK's a bit overpowered and a heck of a lot of fun! More fun to play that my mains actually....
Which is sort of sad....LOL

Am I bad for liking engineering over any other profession? I like the way the goggles look on my characters.

[set to music]
"I have a Horde main / he is an engineer / I have an Alliance main /he is an engineer."
Ahem. Which is a way of saying, "Absolutely not. Engineers ROCK."

I have Engineering on my Warrior and must confess, I love it. Expensive as hell to level, but tons of fun.
