Tips from the manual
Guynumber from Area 52 brings up a good point: why did Blizzard even bother putting game information in their original manual? Surely, they must have known that they'd be changing the game quickly, and while of course they'd have had no more idea than we had that some things so big would change (no ammunition, anyone?), they could have at least kept in mind that patches were coming.Curious, I pulled out my old original manual. Here's some tips straight from the original release of World of Warcraft, when Magister's Terrace was a twinkle in a dev's eye, and Icecrown was just a level in Warcraft III, that aren't applicable any more:
- Pallies are only available to Alliance races and Shamans are Horde only.
- As Guymember points out, the manual says you will lose significant experience on death (but not so much as to lose a level).
- Only the Priests, Shamans and Paladins have resurrection spells.
- Attack Rating increases your chance of hitting a target with a weapon.
- As a first level priest, your maximum skill level in holy magic is five. As you cast holy spells, your holy skill will max out until you level up and the cap increases.
- The Paladin spell, Healing Aura, can be used to heal party members over a short period of time, but can only be used out of combat.
- In order to cast a totem spell, the appropriate totem must be in the Shaman's inventory.
- "There are over 2000 quests in World of Warcraft" (technically still true, but that number is cute now).
- The first time you encounter a battleground, you must walk through a red portal to enter it, though you may use the flying mount system to return there if you have learned the flight path.
- If you engage in objectionable PvP, such as killing new players or noncombat NPCs, you will earn dishonor. Earn enough and you will be branded an outlaw, suffer experience penalties, or even be attacked by every NPC on sight.
Some of those changes are a trip back through time -- remember dishonor? I'd completely forgotten about it. And of course, lots of the manual is helpful, so to answer Guynumber's question, many of the "mechanics" directions -- left click on something to select it, right click on something to interact with it -- are still helpful for new players. But yeah -- reading through the original manual shows just how far this game has come since it started. Any Paladins want to start campaigning to bring back Healing Aura?

Bring back dishonor, it was like going over to the dark side.

This was great. Blizzard should go a step further and introduce a "Wanted!" board. I think people who are ninjas should be branded for the deeds they do. This might also persuade the local populace to bounty hunt for rewards. Now wouldn't that be fun. ;)

Actually, I want dishonor back. Maybe not as it was, which was basically negative faction rep.
But I would LOVE to see you lose arena points/honor points for killing lowbies. Put that restriction on Arena gear, gives negative arena rating for dishonorable kills.
Of course, a mob of level 1s attacking a horde city would cause a mass exodus of horde players. (DEAR GOD, I just lost 10 honor because of my retribution aura!)

I'm still "new" and didn't start until Feb 08, but even the idea of "dishonour" is amazing!!
I wish this was still part of the game. I would certainly roll an "evil" toon for fun

I was initially excited about dishonor. I was like, while I'm on a pvp server, at least there's something negative about bullying lower levels.
But then I found out it didn't work that way at all.

garfunkel is totally right.
Bring back dishonour! And PvP ranks like scout and knight.

Was I the only one who was thinking "awesome! so I can betray my faction and join another one!" after reading that way back when?
Then again, I thought that if you killed all the NPCs in a town then that'd mean the area would be taken over/destroyed too >_>
Heh, just imagine how the game would've been then XD

Blizzard should implement a global KoS list... kill a player more than 10 levels below you, or one that outgear, or one that is in or has just got out of combat, etc etc... you garner points...get enough points and you go on the KoS list with a bounty on your head (gold and/or honor) and a lifting of the restricitions, ie, ANYONE can kill you and collect the bounty, with no penalty levied against them. It would add a new dynamic to the game... gankers/griefers can still inflate their collective epeens but it will come with consequences

I really miss the dishonorable kills, because it prevented people from camping questgivers of the opposite faction. Now you can hardly quest at all in low level zones.
@Todd:
I seem to remember such a thing actually being in place, with collectable bounty rewards on some of the PvP-RP servers.

Haha, I like the KoS list concept. That would be a great one on a PVP server

Warlocks in leather at level 40, anyone?
Evan Feb 10th 2009 3:09PM
Dwarf Mage, that is all
Kakistocracy Feb 10th 2009 3:33PM
Ooh! Or the part about mages (and rogues) doing far and away the most damage.
Evan Feb 11th 2009 12:32AM
I have to say though, the one that threw me off the most when starting the game was First Aid. When i joined, it was still a primary profession, so i never picked it up. It took me like 2 patches into TBC before i realized it wasn't one anymore. GG Manual

D'oh!
But the priest thing? What the hell?
Ichthus Feb 10th 2009 3:16PM
It was common practice in MMOs that you leveled up your schools of magic much like a warrior levels up his skills in swords. Last I played FFXI, they were still on that system, but that's been over 4 years ago for me at this point.
AyaJulia Feb 10th 2009 5:06PM
@Ichthus: I just quit FFXI last summer, and the husband still plays occasionally... and yeah, they still do it that way.
kunukia Feb 10th 2009 3:09PM
Wait...I do not still need my totems in my pack? No, seriously. My level 74 Shaman will be thrilled!
kabshiel Feb 10th 2009 3:13PM
If you have a totem relic equipped, then no. You can put your totems in the bank.
kunukia Feb 10th 2009 3:23PM
ahh, thank you!
