Small patch deployed
There has been a small patch unexpectedly deployed tonight. According to some, the patch updates the launcher. It appears the game version remains stable at 3.0.9.9551, which is the same numbering we saw earlier in the week when 3.0.9 was released.The patch is about 5 megs in size. We do not have a download mirror, as it appears to only update the launcher.
While there is some speculation that the launcher is being prepared to get ready for the 3.1 PTR, all that is speculation. We do however, expect the 3.1 PTR to drop sometime soon. In the mean time you can check out our list of known patch 3.1 changes.
If there is any information from Blizzard on the patch, we'll update this post.

But has the Ice Stone melted yet?
Matchu Feb 11th 2009 10:29PM
I imagine the launcher fix was to correct the annoying firewall problem.
Adam Holisky Feb 11th 2009 10:30PM
Can you elaborate? Or if someone else wants to chime in too. Hadn't heard about any firewall issues.
Thanks!
Matchu Feb 11th 2009 10:34PM
I'm using Zonealarm. What used to happen is that when the Launcher launched, it created a temp exe in a randomly assigned folder. The firewall could construe this as a "new" exe and bug you for permission rights. Repeat this everytime the launcher loaded and it got very annoying.
After this "patch" I have to say I haven't noticed it.

I'll be glad if it has got rid of it. Getting sick of going through the motions each time I boot the launcher. Added bonus - time it 'just right' and it'll crash. Had a lucky streak of five the other day. Yay... :(

Or here's a solution:
Don't use zone alarm because it's bad.
The launcher has updated in the past to prepare for large patches, most likely the same here.
Matchu Feb 12th 2009 12:01AM
"Don't use zone alarm because it's bad."
No firewall = bad.
Zonealarm = good, free product.

Linux > all.

The patch has fixed the firewall problem, thank God. It was abou time...

@Anthony Mazel
How is it "bad"? Last I checked it passed Shields Up (www.grc.com) with flying colors and doesn't use up too much RAM. The UI is also pretty good. I've also tried Comodo, but it would NOT remember application permissions at ALL for some reason. I still use it on my old lappie, but my PC is running ESET security.
Care to elaborate?
jbodar Feb 12th 2009 4:53AM
Oh it also passed GRC's leak test, where the test program tries to "call home".

Confirming that after this little patch, my firewall (AVG) no longer asks whether to allow WoW to access the internet every time I load the Launcher (which had been happening since 3.0.8)
Kemikalkadet Feb 12th 2009 7:35AM
Yes that was it. Not just a zone alarm but any decent firewall that notifies you of new connections etc, i use Sygate firewall and that bug's been driving me mad.
QQInsider Feb 12th 2009 9:17AM
@Anthony Mazel:
You are wrong.
The problem was not limited to ZoneAlarm, it affected every firewall that asked for permission when it detected a new program that wanted internet access. If there is a firewall program out there that doesnt do this then it's a pretty useless firewall.
This patch had nothing to do with forthcoming patches and everything to do with fixing this problem that was all over the official support forums yesterday.

@Anthony Mazel
I wasn't using ZoneAlarm but hey, thanks for playing.
Pepsi Feb 12th 2009 10:53AM
The Ice Stone has melted because of that firewall. For sure.

Ugh, it sucks that when you first get the Trial Version, it is not up to date...at all. I am still on my second patch downloading on the Blizzard Downloader and it's been two days. Maybe it's this firewall issue that Matchu is having because I am going REALLY slow. Like, unbelievably slow. Slower than a torrent with one seed... Yeah you get the point. Any advice to get a ONE update so I don't have to keep downloading more patches each time I start it up? My trial time will be done by the time the patches are all done (or does the time not start until I actually start playing the game? I haven't even created a character.) I'm at 2.4.0.8089 and supposedly, from what I can tell, there are is now 3.1
Diamornte Feb 11th 2009 11:09PM
That last patch was a final slap in the face to Warlocks before 3.1...I mean, they promise Warlocks good stuff coming in the future and then nerf Curse of Exhaustion/Recklessness/????whatelse?
Kinsbane Feb 12th 2009 12:09AM
Too true... ... there ya' go Blizz, nerf the two weakest classes in the game Locks and Rogues. Hey! why not help out those poor under-powered Pallies and DK's while your at it. I'm still loving gettin' hit for 9000 damage by unarmed toons. Also, make sure you nerf the crap out of the one spec that still gives us rogues any kind of decent DPS. Oh wait you already did. Nvm.

Think I found it:
"- Fixed a bug that caused the Ice Stone to Deep Breath more often than intended"
