Because Rob Pardo handed him the reins to their EQ guild, and then pulled some strings to get him hired. Sounds more like a case of being in the right place and knowing the right people.

I can see his resume now."Don't forget to add "lead designer on the most successful online game in the history of the world, with billions of dollars in revenue to date".But yep, keep telling yourself that he was a terrible failure just because your class got a nerf or because raiders got more loot than casuals. I'm sure if you say it often enough Blizzard will see the light and sack him.
