WoW Moviewatch: What have you done?
"What have you done?" is originally a song by the Dutch gothic-rock band Within Temptation. For whatever reason, every time I look at the title I can't help but think "What did you do, Ray?" Keyra created a music video for the song, also titled What have you done?
Keyra is totally up-front about the fact that, having used an older machine, the video's framerates suffer in a few places. So, that being said, let's pretend that's not the case for the sake of the review. At first glance, Hot-Blood-Elf and Rocker-Night-Elf sing to each other and walk around a lot. Also, there's angst. Okay, so not ground breaking choices there. But when the models for L70ETC kick in on the chorus, I start feeling like the video really comes together.
I really liked the elements for this video. They're all appropriate to the genre of the song, well-paced, and creative, even while operating in the confines of the genre's memes. (It's a rock video. Guitars, for example, are mandatory. Without them, it's not a rock video. Just ask Slash.) I liked the way Keyra framed the orc singer, and even the Blood Elf guitar player. (Usually, I just want to slap that guy, and this might be the first time I felt someone's made him look cool.)
Overall, I think it worked great. I hope Keyra keeps creating, and gets the chance to rock out on a computer without framerate issues.

/facepalm
I said it before and I will say it again. Please stop making crappy videos with heavy metal songs, slow motion walking, black and white video flashing back to color, and ending with a fade.
IT HAS BEEN DONE 10000000000 TIMES OVER.

Dutch people report in!
I am a fan of WT myself, but I didn't really like the movie itself.
The animations weren't all that great and the blending of the characters into the background could have been better, but if it was a first try I'd say the maker did a good job.

Great song....
Bad video.....

First of all, I would like to thank Michael Gray and WoW Insider for featuring my machinima. This was my first machinima project, and yes, my computer sucks. I admit it. But...good news...I have a new machine. I just need to get everything configured on it to my satisfaction. Better framerates (yay!) means more videos in the future are planned. No, not featuring L70ETC - I only used these models as they were there and fit for this video.
Now to address some of the comments:
@ Wimpkin - I know that first impressions are the biggest, but there are always second chances, yes? Sorry you didn't like the music, and no, that's not all I listen to. I'm very eclectic.
@Shad0wembrace - this is exactly what I envisioned when I heard this song. I'd love to hear what you had in mind - maybe you could do a video of it, or I could, or someone else could - this song has such potential in the machinima realm.
@Stone_Rhino - the Alliance Polka Band was booked.
@Squeegie - that was actually a druid alt that was under the belf. I tried to blend him out, but it just didn't take with my poor, overworked machine, apparently.
@Naix - I opted for the black & white solely for the "in the past" view. Nothing else seemed to fit. And there was no slow-motion walking - all of the walking was at real-time speed. As for heavy metal? Well, I seem to recall a lot of grief given over pop music, so I guess maybe...country & western next?
@Hellscreamy - yes, this was my first attempt at machinima, and I know the animations weren't that great - blame it on a crappy Hewlett Packard :-)
@McRaider - great song, yes - bad video? I would love to hear your specifics for that comment. I am interested in improving my work (although I know that I will never please even if it's on par with "Blind"...but any constructive criticism would be welcome)
@ Everyone Else - thank you for such wonderful comments! This is by no means going to be my only foray into the realm of machinima (though music videos are not going to be the be-all and end-all of what I intend to do). I had a lot of fun with this and do plan on continuing beyond "What Have You Done?"
Thank you, everyone!

Make that "although I know that I will never please EVERYONE even if it's on par with 'Blind'..."
It would appear that I am editing and typing far ahead of my thinking again. Curse you, QWERTY!

I'm not a fan of Within Temptation, but I enjoy machinima alot. In fact, I'm doing a research module on it at uni (and need machinimaists to interview if anyone wants to).
However, I really enjoyed this video, even if the framerate was suffering. I thought it got a little sappy towards the end, but the visuals with Lv70ETC (or should it be lv80ETC?) interspersed made for the perfect rock video worthy of anything MTV used to put out in the days when it was a music channel.
Good work.
