Addon Spotlight: Livestock
Every weekend (well, almost every weekend), Addon Spotlight takes a look at the little bits of Lua and XML that make our interfaces special. From bar mods to unit frames and beyond, if it goes in your Addons folder, we'll cover it here.
Mounts and vanity pets are a bigger part of many people's WoW than ever before. They don't take up any space in our bags (yay!), there are achievements for them (meh!), and there are a lot of cool ones to find (even if the raven mount keeps eluding me and the rest of my guildies). However, Blizzard's interface for these summonable beasts leaves a lot to be desired.
Livestock is here to fill that gap. It aims to handle all your vanity-pet and mount related needs, with the following features:
- Buttons to choose a pet or mount to summon
- Buttons to summon a random pet or mount
- Can ensure that you always have a pet out (i.e. resummon on zoning in to an instance, ressing, etc.)
- "Smart mount" feature to choose flying/ground mounts as appropriate
- Keybindings for all important function
This last feature is the one that makes it viable for me; if I have to click to mount up, I'm not going to use your mod.
I'm not going to lie; I tried the mod out for mounts, and it's not my favorite for that purpose. I prefer my old standard Mounted, which generates a dynamic macro for mounting. My reason for that is a little nit-picky: if you move on your ground mount to an area that allows flying (like Krasus' Landing in Dalaran), and then press the mount button, Mounted will stick you right on your flyer. Livestock, by contrast, dismounts you on the first press in that situation; pressing the mount button again will then give you wings.
However, where Livestock really excels is for vanity pets. It lets you build a checklist of what pets you want it to be allowed to summon (for instance, I can exclude my Tiny Snowman, because he requires a snowball), it'll make sure you always have a pet out, and overall it just works, like a mod should. I probably won't keep it installed, because Mounted handles my mounts and I don't really care about vanity pets for the most part. The exception my lucky Dark Whelpling if I think a boss fight is going to be a close thing, but that's easy enough to summon manually.
Still, I know this mod fills a need people have (because they've been writing in about it), so if you're a mount and/or pet fan, and need something to help you tame the madness, give Livestock a whirl.

I'll have to try this.

Downloaded it right away to take care of my hoards of stuff, but I cannot seem to figure out how to move the little button around. It sits in the middle of my screen and it's driving me mental.

To move the buttons, hold down Alt and then move with the mouse.

See, I'm not so picky about my mount - whether I have to click a button - but I don't want to think about my non-combat pets. I just want to ALWAYS have one out. So I use Nug Minipet add-on and it does similar things without the mount fluff.

I also really like the option NugMinipet has to summon a random new pet at set time intervals.

It's in the Livestock options. As soon as you move, turn the camera, etc., it'll summon a random (or specific) vanity pet if you don't have one out.

Could I use this one to ensure that a particular pet (Speedy) is summoned every time I land from a flightpath or enter a new zone etc., but could be unsummoned if need be? My rogue's turtle is a signature part of her character, but I don't want him out in the field, because he gives away my location.

There are lots of options for always summoning a pet -except- certain conditions. One of them is "Do not automatically summon a pet if you are flagged for PvP." Another is "Dismiss your pet when you Stealth."

I use this addon and love it!
My wife once asked me why I collect so many pets but never seem to have one out. Well, I would summon them when I first logged on, but something happened to make it go away (flying too high on my flying mount, going into a new zone, etc.) and it was too much of a pain to keep getting a new pet out. After I found this addon I now always have a pet out.
I also really like it for my mounts (which I also collect), although I haven't tried Mounted so I can't compare.
@Pyornthe
It's been a while since I moved my button, but I think all you have to do is hold control down and right click to drag it.

Been using it since 3.0 went live, it had some bugs at the start, could not identify slow mounts, would use slow mounts instead of fast ones all the time, and I noticed it sometimes ignores your selections for mounts.
But apart from that, very great addon! I especially dig the Minipet Button.

mounted FTW and critter for the pets!

Wow I'm gunna have to give this a try. I use a great mount macro that worked flawlessly in TBC, but now with these restricted flght areas it gets confused.
It's supposed to swtich your mount button to your land mount when you're in an area where flight is not possible, but for some reason in areans like dalaran and wintergrasp it doesn't work.
Too bad I'm not a mount/pet junkie, making the other features of this addon largely useless.
Otik Feb 15th 2009 10:52PM
I just have a mount macro that mounts a land mount on left click and a flying mount on right click

I really like the Addon Spotlight column. I would like to see WI do a new column highlighting WoW target websites. I know that many columns mention websites (and the subsequent traffic spike sometimes brings 'em down lol), but I'd like a column devoted specifically to web sites.
e.g. the great WoW Gem Finder, MaxDPS, Gear Wishlist, Be Imba, Loot Rank, etc, etc.

I've been using this since a little while after Wrath hit. Very handy! Though I'd like for an option in a future version to "switch mount type" on Krasus' landing -- so if you're coming in as a flier and hit it, it switches you to land, and if you ride up on a land mount and hit it, it puts you on your flyer.
I actually haven't tried the vanity pets option yet. Maybe I'll mess with that tonight.
Viper007Bond Feb 16th 2009 7:43AM
Just bind a key combination. "F" is my mount button, but "Shift+F" forces a ground mount regardless of location.
Nathanyel Feb 16th 2009 9:21PM
/click [button:2] LivestockLandMountsButton
/click [button:1] LivestockComboButton
When you leftclick the button (or use a keybind) it will auto-decide on ground or flying, but a rightclick will always call the ground mount.
Nathanyel Feb 16th 2009 9:24PM
PS: That's for a macro, of course.
You could also use [mod:alt] and [nomod:alt] (or shift instead of alt) if you want to have it accessible by keybinds only.

I've been looking for a mod that will tell me how much experience / rep gain I will gain for each quest turn in, of course based on level and preferably recruit a friend compatible. This would help immensely, but I'm not sure if it would be legal... anyone have any pointers?
Rungholm Feb 16th 2009 3:59AM
lightheaded shows xp and rep, its essentially wowhead ingame. Don't think its raf compatible though.
