The Colosseum: Infractus the Flawless Victor
The Colosseum takes us inside the world of the Gladiator (Brutal, Vengeful, Merciless, and otherwise), to interview some of the top Arena fighters in the battlegroups. Our goal is to bring a better understanding of the strategy, makeup, and work that goes into dueling it out for fame, fortune, and Netherdrakes.Infractus is the Death Knight member of Cookn by Teh Book on the Retaliation battlegroup. He is a Flawless Victor, which is usually a pretty good indicator of someone who's got their Arena head sitting right on their shoulders. Death Knights are pretty hot topics right now, seeing as most of the highest-rated teams have at least one Death Knight. Infractus was good enough to share his views on the Arena with Colosseum. Check out what he had to say after the cut.WoW Insider: What are the strongest points of operating as a Death Knight in the Arena?
Infractus: With the way burst is in Arena at the moment, survivability is high on the list. Also, the ability to peel people off your healer quite efficiently being equally as high.
WoW Insider: What's your opening strategy? What do you like to do as soon as the gate opens?
Infractus: First and foremost, I figure out what comp I'm up against. Depending on the map, I'll go behind a pillar or out of Line of Sight and wait for a good spot to open.
For example, say I'm in the Nagrand Arena with my 2s partner (a Holy Paladin named Meetsi). I try to position myself so I can get off a good Death Grip on our focus target, while letting Meetsi stay as close to the pillar as possibel so that he can heal and LOS whenever necessary.
WoW Insider: Death Knights have been called "gods among men" in some circles. It's not a matter of being "overpowered" as much as "very well tooled." What's your opinion on that?
Infractus: Death Knights are indeed a very formidable opponent due to having so many abilities to counter other players. But just like any other class ,if you don't use your abilities wisely, you'll get either yourself or someone else killed.
I would say that certain specs are probably overpowered versus certain classes. Blood being a prime example. Specced for Dancing Rune Weapon and Blood, Death Knights can annihilate anything in cloth or leather in a few Global CoolDowns, but are quite weak against mail, plate, and classes that can easily cleanse diseases.
WoW Insider: How do you work out target designation? (Does someone call it out, or is everyone on their own to figure it out?)
Infractus: Me and my partner(s) discuss what would be the best focus target, but usually the healer (Meetsi) has the final say.
WoW Insider: What do you think about the new hidden, personal rating? Does it seem to make the game better or worse to you? Do you consider the hidden rating an unfair penalty to experienced players?
Infractus: I welcome the change actually. It was never fun being high rated and fighting a team that should be near your rating, but they're leveling a new team. Winning single digit points while losing 20+ is never fun.
Only way I could say the new system was unfair to high rated players was the few players that enjoy squashing the lower rated players when leveling new teams.
WoW Insider: Did you play in previous seasons? What do you see the differences in the new season being?
Infractus: Yes, I started doing Arena in the middle of Season One on my rogue. I'm seeing a lot of parallels between S1 and S5 at the moment. From s2 through s4 healers were literally PvP tanks, as opposed to S5 where burst is significantly higher. So, healers cant just outheal 2+ dps.
WoW Insider: What's the key for your composition's strategy? Are there multiple tactics you can use?
Infractus: Against double-DPS it's just about surviving and killing one of them before they kill one of you. Against Healer/DPS, depending on the comp, you can target the squishiest target and throw a good chain of CC on their partner. That's usually a win. HOJ, Hungering Cold, Strangulate, Belf Silence, not particularly in that order.
WoW Insider: What are you trying to improve?
Infractus: If me and my partner hadn't already been playing together for a long time I would say we were trying to improve on communication and team work, but we've known and played together for a very long time so we can pretty much guess what the other person is gonna do in any given situation. To be honest, I can't really think of much we need to improve on other than actually doing more Arena so we can claim the number 1 spot.
WoW Insider: A lot has been made of healers not having a strong role in Season 5. What do you think about that commentary?
Infractus: Healers are still very strong, people have just become too accustomed to healers being able to tank DPS just by spam healing. Granted, if you don't have a lot of Resilience as a healer you run the risk of getting gibbed.
WoW Insider: What are you hoping to see improved in 3.1? We've seen some changes, obviously, but there's more to come.
Infractus: Just general class balancing to be honest. I like facing a wide variety of team comps. Seeing the same comp 5 times in a row gets old.
WoW Insider: What do you think is the significant difference between an "amateur" and a "pro" Arena fighter?
Infractus: Foresight.

I know other classes are few and far between in terms of Arena success this season, but content variety would be nice. Reading about DK dominance in the Arena (even when it is specific to a single player) is very old news.
Mr Magoo Feb 15th 2009 6:26PM
This was actually about their tactics and how they view the arena and I thought this was a great interview.
The point of the article was not to describe "DK dominance", it was to describe what they do to win the arena. Yes choosing that combo is one of the few ways to get to the very top. Their class choice is blizzard's fault, not theirs!
Yes DKs and Pallys are OP in the arena at the moment - that is a given.
No this does not make this article worthless??
What is interesting is that he wants classes to be balanced for the challenge. He admits that his class is well OP and needs a nerf - again welcoming the challenge. I would say that makes him a fair sport and worth interviewing. (unlike that pally interview - "we stack exploited pallys and killz youz")
I wish the tactics side of these interviews was a bit more in depth. The pillars thing was cool in that regard as well as spell choices and priest tactics. More of this!
The best article in this series IMO.

Everytime I feel the urge to start playing WoW again, I read something like this interview and voila! It is gone!
This site is still a lot of fun, though.

I'm pretty much on the same boat nowadays.
Artremence Feb 15th 2009 12:27PM
Interesting story. It's good to see how the upper tier of PvP players think about their play style and the balance of Arenas.
iDruid Feb 15th 2009 12:28PM
No surprise here. Holy Pally/Dk is the most OP team out there.
Gareth Feb 17th 2009 4:11AM
My thoughts too, I play a prot warrior as my main, a shaman and a priest, out of them the plate wearer is by far the best for PVP since they buffed the damage since TBC but didn't nerf the survivability.
But against a paladin that can heal 1/2 their health bar in one heal, it takes a lot of concentration and all my abilities to get one down, and I'm not sure if that would be for a well geared one.
Deathknights though, overpowered for sure, giving plate wearers magic abilities (holy or disease) means they are good against anything.

Interesting article but no suprises. I would like to see some high ranking teams of different compositions. Perhaps mages now since the changes to the arcane tree has certainly changed the way they play in pvp or are the high ranked teams playing as frost?
Kelfarr Feb 15th 2009 3:17PM
Most high end mages are still playing frost, probably for the reason they played frost from S1 to S4. And now that arcane barrage got nerfed they will probably all be frost now.
arogon Feb 15th 2009 4:51PM
Its a good thing its hard to get flawless victor after they added the hidden rating amirite?!?!?

So says the DK/H Pally team... o.O

ROTFL.
DK/Holadin - how cliche....

This is an insightful interview. He is confirming many of the balancing moves that Blizzard has discussed:
-- There will never be balance in 1v1, but no class is truly OP against everyone. ("Specced for Dancing Rune Weapon and Blood, Death Knights can annihilate anything in cloth or leather in a few Global CoolDowns, but are quite weak against mail, plate, and classes that can easily cleanse diseases.")
-- Healers can be sustainable with enough resilience. ("Healers are still very strong, people have just become too accustomed to healers being able to tank DPS just by spam healing. Granted, if you don't have a lot of Resilience as a healer you run the risk of getting gibbed.")
-- Teams with a healer are more about control than burst. ("Against Healer/DPS, depending on the comp, you can target the squishiest target and throw a good chain of CC on their partner.")
-- The hidden rating system is in place to curtail highly-geared and skilled players from constantly forming new teams and pounding newer teams with less gear and skill. ("I welcome the change actually. It was never fun being high rated and fighting a team that should be near your rating, but they're leveling a new team. Winning single digit points while losing 20+ is never fun. Only way I could say the new system was unfair to high rated players was the few players that enjoy squashing the lower rated players when leveling new teams.")
It is interesting that he talks about wanting to see different class compositions. Blizzard has stated that even a 2v2 team will not be perfectly balanced, and certain team compositions will always outperform others. Therefore, I believe we will continue to see certain classes always at the top in 2s (i.e., rogues, DKs, ret paladins). As resilience becomes more widespread, we'll see some classes fall out (mages) and more come in (warriors, resto druids, disc priests). And some classes will probably never have a firm foothold in 2v2 (DPS shamans).
Debricashi Feb 15th 2009 4:04PM
I think the most striking thing to happen this arena season is the rise of the Hunter. Back before WotLK, you would never ever have seen teams 2, 3, & 4 on the SK100 2v2 listing include hunters.
Everyone knows DKs are powerhouses, and they know exactly why. They have all the tools to demolish other classes.
Hunters, on the other hand, got a buff (and then minor nerf) to explosive shot and a fancy new disengage, and all of a sudden they are totally viable in arena. (My hunter has gone 7-5 with an Enh shammy partner, and neither of us has any pvp gear yet and I have no prior arena experience worth mentioning.)
I don't think any other class has gone from "totally off the radar" to "bad mofo" in nearly the same way.
Debricashi Feb 15th 2009 4:08PM
Note: I'm not trying to imply 7-5 is good. I'm just saying that in the old days a hunter who had no idea what he was doing, paired with a class/spec sitting low on the pvp totem pole would not have been able to hold a winning record for a week.
What is it that gave hunters this bump?
NoTomorrow Feb 15th 2009 4:58PM
I suspect the team name is a reference to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfLAv3JHRwY.
Agree/disagree?
By the way, that video is one of the funniest on all of youtube.

wtb non-FoTM interview pls.
Even if they aren't super-duper high rated and dripping with titles, I'd like to hear how the less-represented classes and odd team comps with decent ratings got there.
I mean, he likes to figure out what comp he's against, likes to take down 1 target while CCing the other, has good communication with his teammate? I mean, really, honestly, if you asked me to write answers to those questions and compared them to what he said, they wouldn't differ all that much. The only thing I saw that I didn't expect immediately is that he didn't hate the new rating system, but since it is based on your historical performance, I'd guess he was already doing well in Arena when the system went in... so it didn't affect him much and is giving him better opponents.
Please don't just contact the top N players. Give us something somewhat interesting and unexpected. How about an interview with some of the higher ranked Warlocks or Hunters or Enhancement Shammies or Spriests. Something that doesn't innately have excellent class skills built for this Arena environment.

"Infractus: Healers are still very strong, people have just become too accustomed to healers being able to tank DPS just by spam healing. Granted, if you don't have a lot of Resilience as a healer you run the risk of getting gibbed."
This says that to get that resilience the healer has to go through "getting gibbed" many times before having enough resilience of it to be viable.
That to me says broken.
