In my experience, shadow gear translates much better into a disc spec than a holy one, making disc/shadow (both pve) very viable for duo speccing.

That is what I am doing. The one argument against that is Spirit is more useful for shadow than disc, due to the talent that boost SP for spirit.

I was Disc right up until our guild's early attempts on Naxxand we were lacking ranged dps, but had lots of healers, so off to Shadow I went. I'd been shadow almost the entire way to 70 and thru BC anyway. Disc/Shadow seems like the right dual spec setup to me. I've focused a decent bit on making sure I'm boosting my crit as shadow anyway, so that helps make the gear translate better. Really curious to see a PTR w/3.10 soon

Honestly with the number of pieces that you need to swap to go from a proper DPS to a proper healing set, getting rid of all of that hit, I don't think there will be an issue for shadow priests to jump right into healing using either tree. Provided they've thought it out in advance, anyway. I personally like crit a lot more than haste, so I'll likely have Disc be my second tree (although I haven't decided entirely yet if I will go PVE or PVP disc).
