Blue poster Vaneras over at the European forums announced that registration for the 2009 World of Warcraft Arena tournament is
officially open in Europe. Aratil made a
similar announcement for US players a few hours after. They remind all players that participants in the tournament, which follows a 3v3 format, will get the chance to obtain an armored murloc pet or the the exclusive
"Vanquisher" title for their characters on live realms. Successful participants will earn slots in live invitational tournaments and a shot at the $75,000 grand prize.
According to the
tournament FAQ, which contains many of the important details, players must play 200 rated matches with one character on the same team within the qualifying period in order to obtain the Armored Murloc pet for their live characters. Meanwhile, players looking to earn the Vanquisher title (for live characters Level 71 and above only) must finish in the top 1,000 teams at the end of the online qualifier. Registration for the tournament, slated to start on February 25, costs $20 or 15 Euro.

If only I knew a 3rd person that would really want to do this. Me and my roomate were interested, and then realized that it is 3v3 only.
It's too bad we don't have another PTR for this though, that was fun last year. Especially just being able to try out different characters in a PvP setting.

Argh... hate arena... but... must get armoured murloc!
Erogroth Feb 17th 2009 5:52PM
I know protection warriors are not half bad in PvP anymore but how are they in arena format. Do you think its worth using a prot warrior or should i just go fury. Arms is still broken so thats out.
Lorsty Feb 17th 2009 5:58PM
Is it wrong if me and my friends are thinking to join just for the pet even though we fail miserably at any kind of PvP? >.>
Wispur Feb 17th 2009 6:15PM
I'm thinking about it too, I am not especially good at pvp, but I think it could be fun, and the armored murloc would be cool too! =D
Now I just need to find 2 other people who don't care if they win or lose, lol.
Psy Feb 18th 2009 1:09AM
PICK ME lol.
I'd love to try this eh, I'm never into this crap for the money or for the wins. It's all about the fun in the end, isn't it? ISN'T IT?
Oh... and a free pet
phlem Feb 17th 2009 6:09PM
It won't let me register...

Epic fail for excluding Connecticut
Dave Feb 17th 2009 8:08PM
Blame your lawmakers, it's their fault. I think CT is one of the states that if anything requires an entry fee it's considered gambling.
This is why things like McDonalds Monopoly has their silly "no purchase required" on their contests and will mail you the pieces for free if you request them.
Blizzard would have to either let everyone from CT do it for free, or tell them to get lost. Guess which one makes more money?
ttvp Feb 19th 2009 8:33AM
/r Dave
That still doesn't completely make sense, since we have casinos and gambling and none of that stuff is illegal.
klaaaaa Feb 17th 2009 6:43PM
Arena could remain limited to those tournament servers and be the leet esport blizz wants without ruining the game for everyone else.
ttvp Feb 17th 2009 7:12PM
Whaaaaaaat? Residents of CT aren't allowed to enter? What the fuck? I've never had my state exclude me from stuff before.
What a bunch of crap, they don't even list a reason.
Blacksabre Feb 17th 2009 7:26PM
Gosh, i need to rush right over and sign up for this.
Not.
The good part is that with all the "Doom" players occupied in the Arena, the rest of Wow will be a little less crowded for the real players.
:wanders off:

I'd like to note the irony here that whenever anyone mentions twinking, tons of people come out of the woodwork to decry it and say how it's ruining something they love.
Then when something about actual PVP comes out, the regular commenters are dead silent or against it.
Draw your own conclusions I suppose but I get the impression there aren't a lot of actual serious PVP'ers that read this blog and it's just alt-a-holics who can't stick to even questing that get grumpy about twinks in PVP, when they're just grasping for excuses to blame when they step into a BG at 21 and they'd still get stomped by a L29. but it's a lot easier to say you're only losing because of twinking, rather than admit that you don't really belong in a BG while you're leveling until you're at or near the max level for the BG.

Maryland excluded... not sure how we passed slots if entering a tournament is considered gambling...
Fidchell Feb 17th 2009 10:23PM
I'm confused about this one as well. I've never seen Maryland be excluded from contests like this before.
Raze Feb 18th 2009 2:35AM
I struggled through playing ten matches the only time I've ever played arena.
I guess that Murloc's just not going to happen.
Alexander Krizak Feb 18th 2009 3:36AM
Interestingly, unlike a few prior Blizzard arena tournaments which just excluded Canada, this one not only includes Canada (save for the usual exception of Quebec), Canadians don't have to pay the entry fee. Instead, we can submit a short essay about tournament gaming in Canada versus the US, mailing it to Irving, CA.
So Canadians can register for less than a loonie. Now that's savings!

Apt that the advertisement depicts a ret paladin and a death knight fighting one another isn't it?
I love PvP but I'll be sitting this zero skillfest out. Blizzard really should have balanced the classes before beginning a tournament like this.
I'll sign up for the tournament the minute after I see ret paladin nerfs announced. In fact, I guess I should say five minutes afterwards considering I would renew my subscription to the game first.
Mikeisnotmyname Feb 18th 2009 8:32AM
Do you have to pay two $20 fees or just one?
