Blue poster Vaneras over at the European forums announced that registration for the 2009 World of Warcraft Arena tournament is
officially open in Europe. Aratil made a
similar announcement for US players a few hours after. They remind all players that participants in the tournament, which follows a 3v3 format, will get the chance to obtain an armored murloc pet or the the exclusive
"Vanquisher" title for their characters on live realms. Successful participants will earn slots in live invitational tournaments and a shot at the $75,000 grand prize.
According to the
tournament FAQ, which contains many of the important details, players must play 200 rated matches with one character on the same team within the qualifying period in order to obtain the Armored Murloc pet for their live characters. Meanwhile, players looking to earn the Vanquisher title (for live characters Level 71 and above only) must finish in the top 1,000 teams at the end of the online qualifier. Registration for the tournament, slated to start on February 25, costs $20 or 15 Euro.

All I know is I'm not joining up for this, this is the sole reason BG's were killed.
The short answer being it will cost Blizzard millions to fix the BG or earn them millions to keep it broken.
The long answer being that with BG's now broken everyone that wants PvP gear now needs to play arena's to get the gear as you can't without an arena rating. As more people play in the arena's they become more comfortable in playing them and and people who would have otherwise never bothered with the arena's are now more or less being forced to choose to either to play in the arena's or give up playing PvP.
By killing the BG's many players began playing in the arena's just for the gear and now that these people who otherwise would have never played arenas are more comfortable in playing them are looking at joining this new tournament. As this is where the big amounts of money start coming into play.
The prize money is said to be over $200,000 (lets round it up to a nice solid $250,000 for an example). Say on a guess it will cost Blizzard $2 million in total to run the tournament, all in all this tournament will cost Blizzard a flat rate of $2,250,000 millions dollars with very little fluctuation in that price regarding the amount of players joined. So to start with they need to regain that investment.
Say if the BG's still were running you'd have 500,000 people joining (less then 1% of the total game population) and another 500,000 that won't because they never play the arena's since they BG and wouldn't feel comfortable in playing. Thats $10 million from from the 500,00 people joining in registration fee's and $10 million that could be viewed as lost since they didn't join. After the tournament is done and over Blizzard makes a profit of $7,750,000 dollars.
Now kill the BG's and suddenly out of everyone who was playing split up and go to either PvE, and many join the arena's. Of those who join the arena's say another 500,000 of those ex-BGer's decide to join since they now are more comfortable in the arena's. The costs to run the tournament wouldn't go up very much since it;s just a few more entries using the same equipment that was already being used. Now you have 1 million players (opposed to 500,000) joining, eaching paying $20, bumping the total signing pot up to $20, take away the $2,250,000 investment and that leaves Blizzard with $17,750,000 which happens to be $10 million more (and they will have noted that).
With that math in mind, it's really is worth millions to kill BG and force people to play in the arena's and will cost them millions to fix it. And it will also make sure to never fix the BG's because the tournaments are yearly (second year now).
So tell me, if you were in Blizzards shoes would you kill the BG's for millions of more dollars? Or fix them and make them like before and lose millions?
