The most interesting part of the article for me was his concept of "I don't have a lot of time to play this game."
He personally played the game 4-5 nights a week, for 3-4 hours a go. That's 12-20 hours of play a week. That's quite a lot of leisure time really.
It baffles me a bit that he felt so time constrained, given how much time he played. Maybe he was in a hardcore raiding guild which took up all of his time with raiding. It's tough to say, but unless he was it seems weird that he never had time to farm materials/gold.
I mean, if you play 12-20 hours a week as long as he has you'd expect a certain modicum of efficiency regarding tasks.

I admit that if I was a strict PVP or PVE player, 15-20 hours is more than enough, per week, to do everything you need. The problem was that I wanted to experience both. I raided 2-3 nights a week on average and did Arena or BG's (or instances) the other 1-2 nights. This left very little time for farming.
That's for one character. I wanted another level 70 to try out in Arena (Shamans in S2/S3 were a bit high maintenance in their compos) so I botted an alt up. That's where botting is simply wonderful. As many people have said - 1-2 times through by hand is more than enough. Anything after that is pure pain management.
