Are Paladins going to get nerfed?

Here's the thing, though... that change will hurt Retribution Paladins more than it will Holy Paladins. Retribution Paladins rely on the synergy of Spiritual Attunement and Seal of Blood / of the Martyr in addition to Judgements of the Wise, Replenishment, and Divine Plea. We'll probably have to see exactly what the incoming nerf looks like before we panic, but considering how Paladins have a history of getting beaten by the nerf bat, it's not an altogether rosy proposition. In fact, I think Paladins are probably going to get nerfed beyond the current Divine Plea and the future Spiritual Attunement. My thoughts after the jump.
Arenas. That's it. I predict that Paladins are going to get beaten to a pulp with the nerf bat because Paladin representation in high rated Arena play is exceptional right now. Even though Paladin representation in raids or ability to heal in raids is about on par with other classes, the fact that our survivability and fast, big heals are dominant in the Arena environment spells inevitable doom. Blizzard has a history of nerfing Paladins when they're on the rise. Remember the nerf to Blessing of Freedom? The nerf to Blessing of Sacrifice? Directly because of Arenas.
In fact, Kalgan's post back in 2007 is somewhat telling of Blizzard's attitude towards balance. He said that Paladins were "grossly over-represented" at that time, even though this was merely the beginning of Season 1. Those nerfs led to Paladins becoming the worst represented class in the 3v3 (the format of professional Arena play) months later (2nd worst in 2v2 and 2nd best in 5v5). I think Blizzard has improved a lot in their attitude and sensibilities since then, but the stigma remains.
Unless the other classes -- even at least the healing classes -- start catching up in Arena representation soon, Paladins are going to get whacked by the nerf bat. Mark my words. It will have little to do with mana regeneration, it will have little to do with raid superiority. It will have everything to do with Paladins making up a full quarter of the top classes in Arena play. Guess what? Survival Hunters make up a fifth of that. So they're going to get nerfed, too. This is part of Blizzard's struggle to keep all classes balanced in all aspects of the game. It's an impossible task, but you have to hand it to them for trying. In the meantime... panic.

I'm going to assume all the references to Divine Illumination are supposed to be references to Spiritual Attunement?
Kvothe Feb 18th 2009 8:29PM
Well, obviously they messed up this time. In all honesty, it's a fair mistake, Spiritual Attunement is a passive ability that no one ever thinks about.
Iwanttobeasleep Feb 18th 2009 8:52PM
Kvothe: As a healadin, I fully enjoy spiritual attunement. Nothing like being able to take a non-fatal hit and get a bunch of mana back. (Assuming I know the other healers aren't stressed.)
Kvothe Feb 18th 2009 10:05PM
Well, obviously we all like having mana from healing. The point I was making is that when I get healed, if I think about it at all, I just remember "oh, there's that mana we get from other's heals". I don't think "oh, Spiritual Atunement was the mechanic that gave me mana". I am not saying we don't think about it, it's just that we don't think about it by name.
Reinard Feb 18th 2009 8:08PM
...Divine Illumination? What ret paladins do you know that spec 41 points into Holy for that? o_O;
Do...do you mean Spiritual Attunement? I really hope you do D:
vexis58 Feb 18th 2009 8:34PM
I was confused when I saw that too. The funny part is he even links to the ability in that paragraph, so I was thinking "wait, what was Divine Illumination again?" and hovered my mouse over the link and saw the tooltip pop up that said it was that weird 41-point Holy talent that lowers the mana cost of spells. Retribution paladin indeed.
Lemons Feb 18th 2009 8:52PM
Heh, I saw that too. I was like "Wow, a lot has changed since I stopped playing my pally O.o"
Tradyk Feb 18th 2009 8:09PM
By Divine Illumination, do you mean Spiritual Attunement?
Reinhold Feb 18th 2009 8:10PM
And nothing ever changes for us Warlocks.
Mr Magoo Feb 19th 2009 4:34AM
Apparently they are coming 3.1 for warlocks. Hey, nothing has come yet for pallys either?! Don't start hanging yourself just yet!
Oh and....its about time for pallys. YAY!!!
I feel so sorry for you...not.

-PVP Context-
I think its funny how guys like GC will tip toe around nerfing a Pally when you have a class like a Warlock that is soooo far behind Pally's when it comes to PVP viability.
You could nerf nearly every Pally ability and they are still a Plate Wearing, Self Healing, Burts DPS Dealing class with BUBBLE. Bubble, is the most powerful PVP spell in the game hands down.
Its a joke. I ran 100 arena matches last week. I was over .500 against every team without a Pally but under .500 against Fagadin teams.
Like I said, its a joke. Pally's are the "chosen" class. If you want to be the best tank in the game, roll a pally. If you want to be the best healer in the game, roll a pally. If you want to be the best DPS in the game, roll a pally.
/delete class

I kind of feel like paladins aren't especially overpowered in raid content, but I could be wrong I suppose.
However, there is a reason why paladins are such a huge part of the top end arena teams right now and I have a feeling it's not just because all paladins are 1337 players.
Come on, they nerfed ARCANE mages. They were no where near the representation of some classes on the top end (DK, hunter, pally?). So yes, I'd be expecting a nerf to paladins. Hopefully they don't screw it up like they did with arcane. :\

Why does blizzard nerf us more? Honestly, paladins were the worst class in the game for tanking and dps for about four years and we get a big patch that makes us a bit higher than other classes in certain aspects of the game such as PvP and raiding. They nerfed us down a bit because we were op but now were on par with other classes. I understand that in arenas we are overpowered. My pally has a 1707 2v2 rating and its my first time pvping. I don't see a real reason to nerf us. Sure lower our pvp abilities, but getting rid of our mana regen? You already nerfed Judgement of the Wise. My pally runs out of mana like every two minutes soloing. Really do you need to nerf us? Can't pallys stay as one of the good classes? We were the worst class practically the past 4 years. My (Divine hehe) plea to blizzard is leave us raiding pallies be and nerf our pvp capabilities a little bit not, "To the ground baby!"

I agree with you. I don't like that they're nerfing pallies for pve but i really do hope they nerf their pvp abilities. I'm always getting rocked by you guys.
Wulfhere Feb 18th 2009 10:31PM
It's because you lie and say things like "we were the worst class for tanking for four years" when TBC came out in 2007 and you began dominating tanking at that time.
Malkeior Feb 18th 2009 10:43PM
Paladins were considered the worst overall tanks for almost the entirety of BC.
muffin_of_chaos Feb 18th 2009 11:52PM
It better flipping be "to the ground" at this point.
Gareth Feb 19th 2009 4:15AM
"Paladins were considered the worst overall tanks for almost the entirety of BC."
Total rubbish, they were the best AoE tanks, more or less needed in much content to be able to handle certain encounters and had few problems at all in solo tanking most of which happened due to over gearing an encounter.
Paladins would find themselves though off tanking more often then warriors because warriors could only solo tank, as a prot warrior I was well aware that a paladin tank is much better all round. Lucky for me there was a shortage of tanks, or I'd have not gotten any action in TBC.
Ravenwhite Feb 19th 2009 7:16AM
You do realize that Paladin tanking only became truly viable in patch 2.3 right?
