Are Paladins going to get nerfed?

Here's the thing, though... that change will hurt Retribution Paladins more than it will Holy Paladins. Retribution Paladins rely on the synergy of Spiritual Attunement and Seal of Blood / of the Martyr in addition to Judgements of the Wise, Replenishment, and Divine Plea. We'll probably have to see exactly what the incoming nerf looks like before we panic, but considering how Paladins have a history of getting beaten by the nerf bat, it's not an altogether rosy proposition. In fact, I think Paladins are probably going to get nerfed beyond the current Divine Plea and the future Spiritual Attunement. My thoughts after the jump.
Arenas. That's it. I predict that Paladins are going to get beaten to a pulp with the nerf bat because Paladin representation in high rated Arena play is exceptional right now. Even though Paladin representation in raids or ability to heal in raids is about on par with other classes, the fact that our survivability and fast, big heals are dominant in the Arena environment spells inevitable doom. Blizzard has a history of nerfing Paladins when they're on the rise. Remember the nerf to Blessing of Freedom? The nerf to Blessing of Sacrifice? Directly because of Arenas.
In fact, Kalgan's post back in 2007 is somewhat telling of Blizzard's attitude towards balance. He said that Paladins were "grossly over-represented" at that time, even though this was merely the beginning of Season 1. Those nerfs led to Paladins becoming the worst represented class in the 3v3 (the format of professional Arena play) months later (2nd worst in 2v2 and 2nd best in 5v5). I think Blizzard has improved a lot in their attitude and sensibilities since then, but the stigma remains.
Unless the other classes -- even at least the healing classes -- start catching up in Arena representation soon, Paladins are going to get whacked by the nerf bat. Mark my words. It will have little to do with mana regeneration, it will have little to do with raid superiority. It will have everything to do with Paladins making up a full quarter of the top classes in Arena play. Guess what? Survival Hunters make up a fifth of that. So they're going to get nerfed, too. This is part of Blizzard's struggle to keep all classes balanced in all aspects of the game. It's an impossible task, but you have to hand it to them for trying. In the meantime... panic.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! PAINC PANIC PANIC!!!
GGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Eh... Pallys will always rock regardless of how well they play.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Paladins get nerfed. I mean, they are actually performing well and as noted are being enjoyed by the people that play them. And when that occurs, there is an equal and opposite force that is the QQ player base which calls for the nerf.
This is also another case of the wretched PVP/Arena sector ruining the game for the PVE players.
Wulfhere Feb 18th 2009 10:38PM
Out of curiosity, do you ever consider the classes that have to fight paladins in PvP, or for a raid slot, when you talk about 'performing well' and 'enjoyed by the people who play them'?
Of course you enjoy playing your ridiculously OP character. The rest of us don't enjoy being monumentally less effective than you just because we didn't choose to play the same class.
Ichigo Feb 18th 2009 11:09PM
@Wulfhere
Cry me a river, buddy. Your lame QQ response is exactly what I mean about the PVP/Arena idiotry ruining this game. "Ridiculously OP character" could be said the same about Arcane Mages, Warriors, Death Knights, etc., or the FotM class that is wiping the floor with your main. Please try not to blame the class for your PVP shortcomings.
Blizzard has never been able to balance the aspects of each class between PVE and its Hyde-line PVP side. It's time they chose one or the other, as this nerf/buff cycle and the simpleton trolls it feeds is getting old.
muffin_of_chaos Feb 19th 2009 1:41AM
@Ichigo
Balance is good. Any other opinion is ridiculous. If a class is OP, they should be nerfed or every other class buffed. Get over the fact that people can be annoyed by being beaten by idiots because said idiots are a different, lamely and obviously overpowered class.
Ichigo Feb 19th 2009 1:46AM
@muffin_of_chaos
Balance is fine but balancing for PVP to the detriment of PVE is absolute stupidity, and vice versa.
Again, Blizzard has to find a happy medium between the PVP balance of a class versus the PVE balance of a class. What they need to do is have separate mechanics for PVE versus PVP and stop this lame nerf/buff dance every time a segment of QQers get butthurt over a class in PVP.
AndremedaSC Feb 18th 2009 9:55PM
You know, the more I read about the whole class balance conundrum, the more I wonder if it's even POSSIBLE to really balance all classes across all situations. One class is too weak in raids? Buff 'em! Oops, now they are overpowered in PvP. Another class rocks the Arenas? Nerf 'em! Oops, now they can't get any raid invites, and PvE leveling is barely feasible.
I'm beginning to think the only way they can fix it is to have each class work a certain way in general PvE questing and grinding, and then instantly and automatically rebalance when a member of that class steps into an instance or raid or battleground or arena. And won't THAT make keeping track of gear stats and so on LOADS of fun?
Malkeior Feb 18th 2009 10:18PM
While classes will never be COMPLETELY balanced, it is possible to have a balance much closer than what we have now.
Lycanthro Feb 18th 2009 9:59PM
TO THE GROUND BABY!
Mirajj Feb 18th 2009 10:45PM
Doesn't it suck how the game is constantly ruined, nerfed and "adjusted" all because of those damn Arenas, eh...
jerzz80 Feb 19th 2009 4:25PM
I dont follow that at all. Pallys could get their DPS nerfed to the ground and they will still put up better ReCount numbers then other classes if their gear is right.
I mean, thats what this is about right? Recount envy. All you PVE hams arent happy with just completing an instance or raid. You gotta be at the top of an irrelevant list. Dont blame PVP for this horsesht, blame Recount.
Hal Feb 18th 2009 10:47PM
I have to wonder what 3.1 holds in store for Protection Pallies. There's supposedly some changes coming that'll make us viable in PvP. Spiritual Attunement is likely to become something we'll have to spend talent points on so that we can still tank effectively.
What are we going to look like?
braveakasa Feb 18th 2009 11:01PM
Blessing of Kings no longer a 5 talent at tier 1 of the prot tree come 3.1.
I welcome Spirtual Attunement to the prot tree. Probably Tier 2 meaning a Holy Paladin would have to drop alot of useless points just to reach it , either in strength or another stack.
Meaning Ret paladins can reach it easially taking it rather than kings , and Prot can reach it easially too.
I can't see this being a problem , and suddenly all that MP5 I have been shunning might seem a bit more usefull.
Psy Feb 18th 2009 11:02PM
I hope no Paladin players are surprised by this, I surely am not.
Lithos Feb 18th 2009 11:32PM
I hardly believe this will dampen the ability of a holy paladin drastically, however the pve Ret paladin is going to feel the burn dramatically.
With 0 mp5, and no gear with intellect , our mana pool is small. Judgements of the wise only just cover crusader strike and divine storm, and divine plea even at 1min cd, cannot suport the drain of using consecrate + exorcism consistently, which are NEEDED to maintain a competitive DPS in raids.
It is the mana gained from heals after using the self injuring seal of the martry/blood, from spiritual attunement, that keep us going.
At the 25man level ret paladins are at a good position, not the top, and so depending on the extent of nerfing to spiritual attunement, this could really be, to the ground baby.
AJ Feb 18th 2009 11:12PM
"So remember, there are other people playing this game. There are people who don't enjoy raiding yet you don't see us crying about it. Take your nerfs and learn how to adapt.
Or, you know, cry about it. It's worked for the past four years."
Nadril you absolutely miss the point most tho not all of us are making. Blizz should nerf PVP skills if they are OP or whatever, if the can do it in a manner that doesnt make PVE craptastic for those of us that don't arena. Most of us realize that blizz is "smart" enough to nerf PVP skills/regen rates/whatnot separate from PVE if they really wanted to. Most of us realize that there are many diverse interests in the WOW playerbase. Some of us are happy to let PVP be PVP, just so it doesn't get nerfed with such a wide brushstroke as Blizz is famous for in the past.
Nadril Feb 19th 2009 12:06AM
I find that, a lot of times, nerfs to PvE are laughable. You get a nerf that is 5% of your effectiveness and suddenly your class turns useless overnight?
I've never seen blizzard "destroy" a class in PvE because of PvP. Players can say that they get dropped because of min maxing but in reality a very large portion of guilds don't do this. If they do, well, I suggest finding a new guild.
As far as PvE/PvP seperate skills go, well, I don't really like the idea. From what I understand as well blizzard isn't very keen on the idea as well. I remember that they did this in EQII and it really didn't help that much.
Ilnara Feb 18th 2009 11:12PM
The Magus called, they want their QQ back.
