The Queue: Extreme Edition

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky will be your host today.
Dan Asked...
"Does anyone know who the three characters in all the BlizzCon announcement graphics are (see posting earlier this week)? One looks just like Thrall, but the other two seem pretty vague... a paladin and some sort of demonic rogue looking thing (maybe an Orc)?"
Great question! I love answering questions that move beyond the glitz and glamour and delve deeper into things. The image in question is pictured at the top of this article for those that missed our BlizzCon 2009 announcement earlier in the week. Each of the characters represents one of Blizzard's different major franchises: Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft.
The left hand guy is Thrall, as you mentioned. Thrall is the Warchief of the Horde, Liberator of the Orcs, Lord of the Clans, Son of Durotan and Ruler of Durotar. He's a bad ass dude.
In the center sits Tyreal, from the Diablo series. He is Archangel of Justice, member of the Angiris Council. He's a bad ass dude.
On the right is Zeratul, a member of the Protoss race from StarCraft. He's a Dark Templar that likes to go around and assassinate people. And while Kerrigan played him like a tool, he too is a bad ass dude.
The links above will take you to wiki entries on each of the characters if you want to know more about them.
Robert M asked...
"Do we have any idea if Power Word: Barrier is going to take the place of Divine Spirit? If it was that high, a Barrier/CoH priest could prove to be pretty nasty and send the other healers home crying."
I agree that it might create some imbalance, however until we see what Blizzard has decided to do on the PTR (soon, I'm sure), we can't really start speculating what the effects of it will be. And just to be clear: we don't know where it'll exactly exist.
Robert M also asked...
"WoW Insider reported that 3.1 was finished according to a Kaplan interview.
Don't all the changes and the 'waves' of class changes lead many to believe that Blizzard is full of bat guano? Or that the previous major patch and expansion didn't go as smooth as they had thought it would at the very least, and they had to head back to the drawing board for a few areas?"
This is another great question!
What I took from the Kaplan interview was that Blizzard has the large points for future patches already mapped out. Ie: They know what they want in 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, etc... Activision-Blizzard is one of the largest game studios on the planet, they know how to plan things out better than the rest of them. I can tell you from working behind the scenes at a few programming gigs, as well as with my experience here at WoW Insider and the Joystiq network, that we have a plan for what we'll do with the site for the next year. And while that will change over time, no doubt, I could list off several things I know are in the pipeline to be changed here at WoW Insider. The same applies to Blizzard and their patches. They have a very good idea where they want to be a year from now, and stuff is going to change during the passage of time, but they can list off several big things that are in the pipeline.
This is all part of the development process. I wouldn't take it as a sign that Blizzard has had failures. I would take it as the exact opposite. They have zoned in on things that work and don't work, dynamically adapting to the changing environment. They bring out changes, sometimes testing them live (perhaps a little more than they should, granted), and then bring out more changes to compliment those. This is a part of the "Extreme Programming" model that has been popular for a while now. There is some good academic debate to be had about that model, but I'll leave that out since it's not totally relevant to WoW.
The idea, which I think underlines your question, is that Blizzard should come up with a plan and stick to it. And while that works for some things, it's been proven numerous times that the "stay the course" attitude ends in failure – especially in business.

If you've read any lore about the Blood Elf/High Elf divergence, you could understand some of why Vareesa is so angry. High Elves are angry at Blood Elves for what they see as a weakness--succumbing to fel magic to feed their addiction, capturing a being of pure light and goodness, and so on--and are angry at being confused with Blood Elves, for another twist on it.
Also, the Windrunner family has been utterly shattered. The sisters used to be close, but Alleria was lost in Outland when the world shattered and they had to close the portal to prevent Azeroth from going with it. Then Sylvanas was turned to her present form, which even SHE hates. She lives (so to speak) only for revenge on Arthas, and has said herself: "What joy in there in this curse? What are we if not slaves to this torment?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byFXV4QbEaA
Realistically, you could ask the same of the entire Alliance re: the Forsaken. They were ALL former humans and elves, but their families are so appalled by what they've become that a full rejection has taken place. Not to mention that in unlife, most of the Forsaken have absolutely no warmth or loving emotion left in them. Can't say I blame them after what's happened to them.

Valeera was there!
Hah! Alliance FTW!

Why would Vareesa welcome all horde with open arms jsut because her sister leads one fo the smellier factions of them?
She might not mind her sister but why would she suddenly be friendly to all Orcs, Trolls, Blood Elves and Tauren? Given Dalaran's history with the horde?
Regardless you really shouldn't take in game faction bias's too seriously
Haarits Feb 19th 2009 10:25PM
@Mazoku, if you weren't just having a laugh at Tom, he meant "char" as a short form of "character".
@Cellwinn, I don't know how tough it is to get rep with the Taunka, but it's pretty limited for Alliance and Frostborn with only one daily. Maybe those factions will have more to them in Ulduar? It'd make a lot of sense with the Frostborn, at least. Or they could go crazy and have the Silver Covenant and Sunreavers give rep associated with Ulduar, since there's nothing yet available in-game... Crystalsong is right next to Storm Peaks, after all, so agents in Dalaran could send adventurers out to the respective bases in the forest below to plot the assault up north. Might be nice to have the factions related to the raid be in a different zone, just to mix things up a bit.
@Michael, re: the snake thing in Gundrak. Asked & answered in a couple Queues, I think: it's just decoration. No big story behind it.
Cyanea Feb 19th 2009 10:51PM
I'd be all for being able to get Silver Covenant rep. I want one of their hippogryphs.
Bootsanator Feb 19th 2009 10:45PM
I wish in-game thrall looked as bad ass as that thrall does. in-game thrall looks a bit too ninja-turtleish, especially when doing the wrathgate questline and seeing him next to the reskinned Sylvanas.

Since Kaplan is stepping down, who is going to be the new head honcho? GC?
Itanius Feb 19th 2009 11:56PM
Tom Chilton, most likely.

Why can't the Lich King retake control of the Forsaken?
Haarits Feb 19th 2009 11:07PM
Because millions of teenage boys would have to reroll a race not controlled by Arthas if they wanted to play their own way.
"Hahaha, I'ma go raid Southshore! Oh... wait. Nope, the Will of the Lich King buff is on, I'm being forced to go mine copper for the next 8 hours, for the Scourge. Forget this, where's my Xbox?"
AyaJulia Feb 19th 2009 11:56PM
From a lore perspective, they were already killed and enslaved once. They're angry. They're full of hate, rage, spite... and their will can't be broken again. (This is the lore reason for their racial, Will of the Forsaken.)
Those Forsaken who HAVE slipped back under his control are what we know today as Undead Death Knights. :)
That said, if the Lich King did get a few of them back under his sway, how would you know? They wouldn't look any different.
Angus Feb 20th 2009 8:04AM
1 word: Sylvanas
When Illidan attacked the Lich King he was extremely weakened. He had to let go of a lot of stuff he was controlling to muster the strength needed to survive.
Sylvanas seized the moment and used her will to break free of the Lich King's hold. She also managed to get a huge chunk of the scourge their individuality. This became the basis of the Forsaken.
If you have done the DK starter zone you will see a similar result from when the Lich King makes a mistake.

Im confused about what theyre going to be doing with badges for Ulduar and in Heroics.
Will they be making a new form of badge that only drops in Ulduar? Will they add more gear you can purchase with Hero/Valor badges?
I find it hard to believe they expect anyone to have interest in running Heroics at all when theres hardly any gear to purchase.
Maybe they will add a new badge type to drop in heroics?
The Claw Feb 20th 2009 12:19AM
Ulduar-25 will drop new badges, Emblems of Conquest.
Ulduar-10 will drop Emblems of Valor, just like the current 25-man raids.
Emblems of Heroism will be left behind.
"I find it hard to believe they expect anyone to have interest in running Heroics at all when theres hardly any gear to purchase."
Well, no, once you've progressed past running heroic 5-mans, you're not expected to have any interest in running them any more.
Cyno01 Feb 19th 2009 11:14PM
Are they ever going to get Blizzard Authenticators back in stock?
Aimee Feb 20th 2009 8:13AM
They do get a stock of them in and as quick as the Availble Now goes up on the website thier sold out again. I know I told my guildies about it and they thought I was nuts for getting one. I was hacked a year ago and am now paranoid about hackers, then one of our officers got hacked and we promptly shut the toon down, our GM went so far as to kick the toon out of the guild as soon as he found out (we were all on vent at the time) to prevent as much Guild Bank Hijacking as possible. I was like "Can I begin my Authenticator schpiel now" needless to say my GM and all of our officers began ordering them promptly that day. Even our GM's friend who is GM for the top Horde guild on our server got one.
Just goes to show ya ones Paranoia tends to bring on the Trends :)
Mr Magoo Feb 19th 2009 11:37PM
I suggest you go to the WOW forums and find the answer instead of posting QQ here.
You thought the tournament would start as soon as YOU(??) paid YOUR money?
wow...that is pretty self centred. A more sensible, intelligent and not so pig headed view would be that the window of entrance would run a few weeks for people to hear about it, create chars etc and then the practice would start for everyone.
In fact that is what is happening.
There will be a 2 week training period once it "starts" also and then it starts properly.

When will we see level 80 weapons available for purchase with PVP honor points? 3.1?
The Claw Feb 20th 2009 12:26AM
Looking at http://blue.mmo-champion.com/11/14910422788-arena-matchmaking-system-faq.html .. they stated that season 6 will introduce Furious weapons (requiring 2000+ arena rating); they hinted that maybe there would be two tiers of new season 6 weapons; but they significantly made no mention of what would happen to Deadly weapons.
They are not on either the list of gear purchasable with no arena requirement nor the list of gear purchasable with lower arena requirements.
So I wouldn't get your hopes up too high for straight-up honour-purchasable weapons.
Mike Feb 20th 2009 1:09AM
Does that mean Blizz is trying to make Arenas mandatory for PvP'ers?
P.S. I know what 'honor' is, but what's 'honour'? j/k ;)
