The Queue: Extreme Edition

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky will be your host today.
Dan Asked...
"Does anyone know who the three characters in all the BlizzCon announcement graphics are (see posting earlier this week)? One looks just like Thrall, but the other two seem pretty vague... a paladin and some sort of demonic rogue looking thing (maybe an Orc)?"
Great question! I love answering questions that move beyond the glitz and glamour and delve deeper into things. The image in question is pictured at the top of this article for those that missed our BlizzCon 2009 announcement earlier in the week. Each of the characters represents one of Blizzard's different major franchises: Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft.
The left hand guy is Thrall, as you mentioned. Thrall is the Warchief of the Horde, Liberator of the Orcs, Lord of the Clans, Son of Durotan and Ruler of Durotar. He's a bad ass dude.
In the center sits Tyreal, from the Diablo series. He is Archangel of Justice, member of the Angiris Council. He's a bad ass dude.
On the right is Zeratul, a member of the Protoss race from StarCraft. He's a Dark Templar that likes to go around and assassinate people. And while Kerrigan played him like a tool, he too is a bad ass dude.
The links above will take you to wiki entries on each of the characters if you want to know more about them.
Robert M asked...
"Do we have any idea if Power Word: Barrier is going to take the place of Divine Spirit? If it was that high, a Barrier/CoH priest could prove to be pretty nasty and send the other healers home crying."
I agree that it might create some imbalance, however until we see what Blizzard has decided to do on the PTR (soon, I'm sure), we can't really start speculating what the effects of it will be. And just to be clear: we don't know where it'll exactly exist.
Robert M also asked...
"WoW Insider reported that 3.1 was finished according to a Kaplan interview.
Don't all the changes and the 'waves' of class changes lead many to believe that Blizzard is full of bat guano? Or that the previous major patch and expansion didn't go as smooth as they had thought it would at the very least, and they had to head back to the drawing board for a few areas?"
This is another great question!
What I took from the Kaplan interview was that Blizzard has the large points for future patches already mapped out. Ie: They know what they want in 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, etc... Activision-Blizzard is one of the largest game studios on the planet, they know how to plan things out better than the rest of them. I can tell you from working behind the scenes at a few programming gigs, as well as with my experience here at WoW Insider and the Joystiq network, that we have a plan for what we'll do with the site for the next year. And while that will change over time, no doubt, I could list off several things I know are in the pipeline to be changed here at WoW Insider. The same applies to Blizzard and their patches. They have a very good idea where they want to be a year from now, and stuff is going to change during the passage of time, but they can list off several big things that are in the pipeline.
This is all part of the development process. I wouldn't take it as a sign that Blizzard has had failures. I would take it as the exact opposite. They have zoned in on things that work and don't work, dynamically adapting to the changing environment. They bring out changes, sometimes testing them live (perhaps a little more than they should, granted), and then bring out more changes to compliment those. This is a part of the "Extreme Programming" model that has been popular for a while now. There is some good academic debate to be had about that model, but I'll leave that out since it's not totally relevant to WoW.
The idea, which I think underlines your question, is that Blizzard should come up with a plan and stick to it. And while that works for some things, it's been proven numerous times that the "stay the course" attitude ends in failure – especially in business.

Honour is what you buy gear with on Oceanic servers. :-)

Has there been any mention of bringing challenge back to WoW? I know Ulduar is supposed to be the next big thing for WotLK, but the rest of the expac has been a joke so far so I'm not holding my breath for 3.1. I hate being able to faceroll through content!
The Claw Feb 20th 2009 12:28AM
Did you faceroll Sarth + 3 drakes?
If not, it has been announced that 11 of the 14 Ulduar bosses will have hard modes, which presumably you will not be able to faceroll.
If you DID faceroll Sarth-3D, then no, don't expect any particular challenge from WoW in the future.

Don't feed the troll, kids.
Avan Feb 20th 2009 3:49AM
@AyaJulia:
I'm not trolling, its a legitimate question. WoW has only gotten easier and easier the closer it got to 3.0. Is it so wrong to want to actually have to work towards progression instead of practically having it handed to you?
The Claw Feb 20th 2009 5:35AM
So did you faceroll Sarth + 3 drakes or not, Avan?
Avan Feb 20th 2009 12:26PM
Instead of using 4 spells to maintain DPS, 2 extra spells were needed to crossheal and keep our OTs going. Took us about 8:40 minutes. Our only deaths were a healer who went oom and opted to use their soulstone for a mana return, a few pets that weren't commanded to move from the lava, and a boomkin who's comp froze up from all the spell effects. Probably would have gone faster if two of our DPS had full T7 gear.

"I'm not trolling, its a legitimate question."
It's a "legitimate question" that has been asked over and over and over again on every site and every forum even remotely related to WoW since the expansion. It's also been answered just as many times on every site and every forum mentioned, including this one. There are endless posts around here about people saying the game is easy. It's gotten to the point where, whether it was your intent or not, it's trolling now.

Nope, no Horde bias at Blizzard.

Meanwhile, on Bizarro Earth, where King Wrynn appears on the poster!
"Nope, no Alliance bias at Blizzard."

Question;
Isn't there going to be some kind of forsaken extinction soon? I mean, corpses don't breed, and the whole battle for the undercity has surely got to of thinned out their numbers.
Futhermore, where are the abomination guards in the undercity from? Scourge who got their free will back? Because id imagine sylvanas et al would probably frown upon the whole making undead creatures thing, making more mindless undead kindof flies in the face of what the forsaken are about, considering their roots - do the abominations have any level of free will, or are they "programmed" on construction?
Hoggersbud Feb 20th 2009 2:40AM
Indeed, the fact that the Forsaken are ultimately doomed is probably a big factor in their culture. They don't have anything to live for as a people. Which might be why they've got some groups like the RAS acting the way they are.
This isn't a new idea though, I remember the same concept coming up in Exo-Squad with the Neo-sapiens, and some other story the details of which are escaping me.
AyaJulia Feb 20th 2009 3:43AM
"making more mindless undead kindof flies in the face of what the forsaken are about, considering their roots"
Let's not forget this is the same Forsaken that have been creating a plague to use against Arthas et al since level five. They're genocidal. They only want one thing: revenge on Arthas. They don't care what means they have to go through to get it. Some of them take this even further, wishing death and vengeance on all living beings, but Sylvanas keeps them in check.

I've been leveling my DK and I really only have one complaint. I can't see which runes are doing what. I have downloaded and tried every addon I can find to help with this to no avail. I'm using a 22" LCD and with glasses (yes, I'm old, lol) I have 20/15 vision. Trying to see those tiny circles in combat just doesn't hack it for me. Are you aware of any working addon's that could help me with this problem? Btw, your articles on DK's are a godsend:)
Thanks!

Have you tried RuneWatch?
I use the compact UI positioned a little off center in my screen so i can easily see the disease timers and the status of the runes.
hope it serves the purpose for you as well.

Thanks for the tip West! This a very interesting looking GUI for the runes and more. I'll be trying it out over the next few days.
Have a great weekend!

How did the scourge in duskwood get so faraway from Northrend and Lorderon?
onetrueping Feb 20th 2009 3:55AM
There aren't really Scourge in Duskwood, not really. What there is is a Necromancer raising his own undead, plus the taints of Karazhan and the Scythe of Elune corrupting the area. Plus, perhaps, some of the Emerald Nightmare manifesting from the portal in the center of the area.
