PTR character copy is back up! Everybody panic!
Okay, everybody. Stock up on tarps, bottled water, and canned beans, because the PTR character copy site is up and running again. We don't know if this means anything, or if this PTR is actually going up soon, or even if these copies will actually work, but it is our duty to make sure you get a steady news trickle of anything and everything related to the 3.1 PTR.
There are currently two realms to which you can copy - Broxigar (PVE) and Anasterian (PVP).
Go copy a character or two, then get in the fallout shelter, because things just might get exciting soon. Alternatively, these copies might go nowhere like the last set. Fingers crossed!

My heart warms on the sight of such an armada of eager loyal TESTERS ready to storm the PTR to try out every possible move and REPORT the last bug standing.
/sigh

(Pre-emptive strike against flames: Please don't take this as some kind of reflection on either game I'm talking about; it's merely a statement about some things Mythic does right when testing games. If you feel threatened by my saying something nice about WAR's developer, then take solace in the fact that I'm clearly back to playing WoW now, else I wouldn't be on this site.)
I beta-tested Warhammer Online last year, and one of the things that really impressed me was the amount of actual testing going on during their beta tests. I felt like the people I was there with were really there to beat on the game and ruthlessly criticize its flaws. And I felt like the bugs and suggestions we filed were actually quite effective. I can't tell you how gratifying it is to spot some fundamental problem with the game and then see it actually show up in the next patch notes as fixed!
But I wish I knew how Mythic cultivated this culture of testing in their tests, because I would sorely love Blizz to be able to do the same with theirs. The PTRs seem to attract lots of people who just want a free preview - which isn't really a problem in and of itself; we all love free previews, and it doesn't hurt anyone to go check out the latest stuff on the PTR. The problem is that there don't seem to be many people who actually want to test and refine the patch, for some reason; few people are inspired to ruthlessly attack the seams in the game world, looking for bugs, like they were on the WAR beta realms.
One thing I do note is that Mythic clearly distinguishes between actual testing (which is invitation-only, even for patches after launch) and public previews/comment periods/stress tests. (which are open to all players)

Sucks for you if the site is getting hammered before you got a shot to transfer.

Hum. The que is full (of course) but the first wait time was 5 days. When I refreshed the page just for the hell of it about 20 min later it said it is now 6 days... Prolly doesn't mean anything but still. So annoying that I wasn't on when it went up.
sephirah Feb 21st 2009 9:11AM
