Are disenchanters getting robbed by rolls?
Sardonis sent us a note the other day, with an interesting, if probably controversial, point inside: when we're in instances, Skinners take their skins, Miners take their ores, and Herbalists take their herbs (or of course they rotate around if there's more than one). At the end of the instance, we don't sit down and /roll on all of the herbs or ores that people have picked up. So why do we do it, Sardonis asks, with disenchanting shards?Good question. My first response was that everyone needs enchants, and everyone can use those mats. But if everyone can get their friendly guild enchanter to enchant something, can't you get your Leatherworker to use skins, or your Blacksmith to use ores? Of course, you could argue that Leatherworkers can get skins from anywhere, but disenchanted blues only show up in instances. If it's an item that required five (or even 25) people to get, everyone should have a chance at it. There are herbs and ores in instances, true, but those can be found elsewhere as well -- they don't need a group to get them. And what about Rogues who unlock chests in instances -- sure, we need them to open the chests, but they need us to get them there.
You can get blues through questing and drops, though, too, so who knows who deserves what. Sardonis is at the point where he won't even say he's a disenchanter -- he'll just do a greed roll like everyone else, and if he gets the item, then he'll DE it. The tradition seems to be that we all roll when we've all helped drop some boss loot, but it's true that we'd never get the shards if it weren't for DE'ers. Maybe they do deserve to take what they make.

So... so what if "There are herbs and ores in instances, true, but those can be found elsewhere as well" -- the herbs/ore/leather in instances required us to get them there, same as the chest, and same as the DE'd shard.
As an enchanter, I tell everyone I'm rolling "greed" on anything I don't need, and if they want me to de it, they should all "pass" on stuff they don't need and "need" on things they do.
The way I see it, statistically, is that the shards under the "greed" rule are getting split 5 ways anyway, so why not be "nice" and shard everyone else's stuff along with my 1/5th of the lewt. I'm statistically going to get my share whether I roll on it now or after it's DE'd, so who cares.
I also don't give out shards until the end of the instance, both to speed up the run and to try and discourage people from the bad habit of magically DC'ing or bailing mid-instance.

i see alot of well stated arguments, I have another one for you.
In order to skill up mining you simply need to find a node or smelt an ore, which you can get fairly easily and for free if you arent lazy. to skill up skinning you simply need to kill a beast, to skill up herbalism you simply need to find a flower. you dont need instances for any of these they are every where in the gaming world. for enchanters atfer lvl 24 on your enchanting/DE you have to enchant something to lvl it. yes you can get greens and blues outside of an instance, however they are much more frequent inside one. I'm not saying that all the vendor items should automaticlly be given to the enchanter, but what i am saying is if you want your greens DE'ed then you should tip the enchanter for it. as an enchanter i would say the price of the vendoring would be enough. as to the comment it only takes a few seconds to make, umm let's see depending on the lvl of the item it doesnt take a few seconds to make and it probly took some gold to get the enchater to that lvl to be able to DE the item as well as time spent lvl'ing the enchanting. the money spent to have your item DE'ed at the vendor price is money well spent because you will have a phenominal turn around on your money in the AH. Such that your "trash" has become highly valuable merchandise. we dont ask the other proffesions to give away thier tallents we pay them for it, albeit most times trough the nose, but we do pay. why should enchanters be made to work for free?

There is another option to consider here, now that (in 3.2) vendor prices are listed on every item, and BOP items can be traded to people in the group when the item dropped.
It would be easy to just let the whole group roll greed on everything, and then offer to buy all the BoP items that no one wants at or slightly above the vendor price - a much better deal than buying BoE items or shards off the AH for the enchanter, and at least as good of a deal as vendoring for everyone else.
