A world without Varimathras
It was probably the least exciting thing to go down during the Wrathgate questline (Wrynn FTW, no?), and I've only played Alliance during Wrath, so I haven't really realized it until now: Varimathras is no longer in the game. He was always my favorite faction leader (even though he wasn't actually the Undead faction leader, so to speak) -- I loved his "You think you can match the might of a dreadlord?" taunt, his story (he always hinted that the Forsaken, a threat within the ranks of the Horde, might have a threat within their own ranks), and his demonic look. And now, after the Battle for the Undercity, he's gone.Fortunately, this is World of Warcraft, and no one in Warcraft really ever stays completely dead -- just ask Kael'thas. But as a more pressing concern, players are currently wondering how they'll be able to do Varimathras' quests (for the Loremaster achievement) with him no longer hanging around the Undercity. New Blue poster Ancilorn says not to worry -- they'll come up with a way for those who can't see Varimathras to do the quests associated with him. Or, and probably more likely, they'll just take them out of the Loremaster requirements.
But a moment of silence, please, for one of my favorite lore figures, Varimathras. He was always on the winning side. Except for, you know, that one time right at the end.

I finished Loremaster after doing the Wrath Gate sequence. It took a little digging to find quests, but I managed it.

the loremaster achievements for the classic continents are still attainable even if youve already killed off varimathras.
someone had to point that out
Jagoex Feb 23rd 2009 6:32PM
Not everyone has completed the amazing questline that leads up to Varimathras's demise, so such a spoiler-heavy post should probably warn readers of the impending spoilage to come, and have a different title to boot. ;)
Sorry, it's the copy-editor in me that is being so picky these days. :)

By this theory we should never talk about any quest ever. I think 4 months is enough time to start revealing spoilers.
Jagoex Feb 23rd 2009 7:02PM
I never said you cannot talk about them -- I only said to give warning to those who haven't seen the content yet and wish to do so without having it spoiled. See the (very obvious) difference?
And no, four months is not enough time for those just getting into the game or who have taken their time playing it.
Not everyone is as connected as you or I may be. It is selfish to assume as much.

I don't see how the author can avoid spoiling it, without gimping the article.
For people "just" getting into the game, his disappearance won't mean much as they have no significant memories to the character in question.
WoW is a game where *everything* is catered towards the end game, so you can't expect WoW Insider to avoid articles because of the *minority* not at end game.
The fact is leveling in Northrend is incredibly easy. It takes around 5 hours per level, so realistically even the most casual of players will have done this quest which is only in the 2nd zone of the new expansion (3rd if you do both start zones). 4 months is plenty of time.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a very slow leveler, and it took me a month to level, so I specifically avoided lore based articles during this time.

it's only been 3 months actually, and as for a non-spoiler title how about "Loremaster after Wrathgate?"
I haven't gotten there yet, (and won't until I get a stronger computer) and others may not have stumbled upon it yet, so Spoilers should have been concidered.
I do know of it though as it's practically impossible to not have seen some reference to it and it's plotlines up til this point.
That said, do your Vari quests before Northrend. (really get your old world loremasters before then if you're that concerned, most of them will give you rep, and rep is nice)
knowing he's going away eventually, sometimes I give the big guy a

How could you spell his name wrong?!
Stoneblade Feb 23rd 2009 6:42PM
Wrynn FTW, no?
No.
Absolutely, positively, unequivocably no.
Touchmytoe Feb 23rd 2009 7:03PM
Wrynn, for the win, with his chin, will throw all Horde in the trash bin! WOeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
uncaringbear Feb 24th 2009 2:33AM
Wrynn FTW? I think not.
Someone needs to punch that d-bag in the head.

You don't have to do the quests for Varimathras for the Loremaster achievement. I had...tons and tons and tons of Eastern Kingdoms quests leftover after doing the EK Loremaster, and some of those were his. No big!
Skuling Feb 23rd 2009 7:18PM
He was my favorite too!
I hope he'll come back, like the other dreadlords did,
I miss him :(
Dreadskull Feb 23rd 2009 7:22PM
It's funny... one of his Warcraft 3: TFT quotes was: "I'm always on the winning side."
Guess he wasn't this time :p

I still for the life of me cannot figure out how to start the Wrathgate quest line. I have looked it up on WoWiki, WoWhead, and Thotbott, and no one seems to have a chain that starts at a specific spot and ends at a specific spot. Everyone just says, "Do all the quests in Dragonblight, and you'll eventually hit it." I'm at about 50+ quests in Dragonblight, and I still don't have any quests at Fordring's keep.
What am I doing wrong? Where does it actually start? If anyone replies to this post, I'd be very appreciative...
I want Varimathras to disappear for me too... I always thought it was silly that the Undead would let a scourge date their queen...
Super Guest Man 9000 Feb 23rd 2009 8:02PM
Varimathras isn't "a scourge". He's a dreadlord, was/is a member of the burning legion. He and his brothers were in control of the scourge forces in the plaugelands during the time of WC3 but thats when the scourge was still under the control of the Burning Legion.
Siorra Feb 23rd 2009 8:11PM
I believe the Wrathgate sequence stars as fars back as this quest:

Jason Feb 23rd 2009 8:25PM
Not to mention the fact that Varmiathras and Sylvanas weren't dating...
Moskvin Feb 23rd 2009 8:08PM
Spoiler Alert?
Tokhand Feb 23rd 2009 8:46PM
Spoilers, because people want it?
So, he talked Putress into acting on behalf on the Legion? Was it said somewhere?
