Lichborne: Top Death Knight DPS builds and patch 3.1

Welcome to Lichborne, where we've pretty much gone insane waiting for the PTR, and are thus stuck in the Death Knight starting zone pretending to be a pretty pretty princess on our very own pony.
Disease-less Blood
While Blood is considered the redheaded stepchild of the Death Knight trees these days, a lot of in-the-know Death Knights know that it actually gets a pretty bad rap. Given a solid gear level, you can turn out some surprisingly good DPS. Take, for example, the Disease-less Blood Build. It's exactly what it sounds like: You completely skip the diseases. Use a couple Obliterates to generate Death Runes, then spam Heart Strikes and Death Coils to your heart's content. It's incredibly simple, yet it can generate some amazing DPS with a hard hitting weapon.
The con is that you need a lot of strength and a strong weapon to pull this spec off. We're talking at least a Titansteel Destroyer before you even think about it. However, once you got the gear, you're pulling even with the traditional big boy DPS specs. Plus, it avoids the traditional problems of a Blood spec with tightness -- that is, spending all of your runes before your diseases drop without wasting runic power or a Sudden Doom proc. The latter, of course, won't be as much of a problem in 3.1 since Sudden Doom will automatically trigger an extra Death Coil, but for now it is a very real problem.
As you can imagine, it's probably not appreciated that a Death Knight can churn out such high DPS while ignoring a core damage mechanic of the class, so you can expect a nerf to the idea of disease-less DPS in 3.1. While simply lowering the base damage on Heart Strike and Obliterate could work, that might penalize the disease-using Blood DPSers (Whom Blizzard recently said they want to buff) a bit too much. Luckily, that's what bonus damage is for.
In short, I'm predicting that Blood Strike, Heart Strike, and Obliterate will see a drop in their base damage to make disease-less Blood an undesirable rotation, but a bump in their bonus damage per disease so that disease-using Blood spec users aren't left in the cold. Still, until then, if you're a Death Knight DPSer with a decent weapon and at least Heroic-level gear all around, disease-less Blood is probably worth a try.
Unholy DPS
The traditional Unholy DPS build is still considered the top dog of 2-handed DPS. It also throws a monkey wrench in my idea of using bonus disease damage to readjust for disease-less Blood. Because of the third disease, adding more bonus damage to Blood Strike and Obliterate could be a recipe for disaster.
Probably what will happen here is that we'll see a major overhaul of Unholy DPS' talents. It's difficult to see Scourge Strike being nerfed too much for fear it will become weaker than obliterate, but it may be possible that crypt fever will lose a bit of potency. Ghouls continue to perform amazingly well when talented and glyphed, so it's possible that the trade off for all their new found survivability may be a damage nerf as well, or possibly a moving of the AE damage avoidance to Ravenous Dead so other specs can grab it. The other strong possibility is to make perma-ghouls baseline, thus giving all specs the chance to have an uber-buffed pet. Of course, this could lead to some serious class envy, both in PvE due to the DPS boost and in PvP due to Leap and Gnaw becoming baseline available to all specs.
Pestilence being made damageless could actually be a solid damage reducer in and of itself, or at least cause Unholy AE DPSers to give a bit more though as to how they spend their blood runes, using pestilence only at the last minute to respread diseases about to fall off, but in the end, expect some DPS nerfs, if only to make up for the rebuffing of Gargoyle.
Dual Wield DPS
32/39 Dual Wield DPS relies on dual wielding's superior scaling and the ability of Killing Machine to proc off of both weapons. Despite repeated attempts to nerf it, it seems to continue to stay on top due to superior scaling. Still, I expect 3.1 to include another attempt to cut it down to size. Funnily enough, it's possible that the reigning champion of Death Knight DPS will be getting at least one buff next patch as Unholy Blight moves to the 21point slot on the Unholy tree. The loss of Gargoyle may seem like a blow at first, but being able to have that nearly constant Unholy Blight damage going alongside Howling Blast will likely more than make up for it.
That said, Blizzard's shuffling of the Frost tree is probably what will throw a monkey wrench into the works here. I expect that Killing Machine and Necrosis will be bumped further down their trees, such that a dual wielder will essentially be forced to pick one or the other. Separating the cornerstones of a dual wield build may be the only real way to actually get back to down to level with 2-handed DPS.
Of course, the other problem is not making dual wield damage completely obsolete. In that case, the solution may involve tweaking Killing Machine yet again. The problem here is that any viable criticism or ideas from us on how to properly bring 32/39 down to earth may have to wait until we see exactly what happens to the frost tree. At the least, I'm still expecting Glacier Rot and Black Ice to move deep enough down the tree in order to give Unholy and Blood a reason to take a second look at the early frost tree.
The waiting is the hardest part
It seems likely we'll know for sure how everything is going down in the next few days, and we'll have a lot to talk about then. In the end, we probably have a few more months on live to play with these builds to our hearts content, and enough time on the PTR to whip up some replacements for 3.1. Either way, though, I'd advise everyone to strap in and sit tight. Regardless of how things shake out, it's probably going to be a bumpy ride, and things will change by the time we're on the other side, perhaps drastically. We'll keep you posted.

The problem with your suggestion / prediction re: "fixing" diseaseless blood is that it would also pretty badly gut all DK specs but unholy for PvP; Blood and Frost builds both rely very heavily on oblits to put out their damage, and given how near impossible it is to get diseases to actually stick on a target in competitive PvP, for PvP purposes it would be an across-the-board nerf. Given Unholy's dominance in the arena as-is, a change that would funnel yet more people that direction seems unwise.
Beyond that, I should note that diseaseless blood doesn't really come into its own until you've grabbed a Sigil of Awareness off of Heigan. Without that, most 51/0/20 specs would be better off with an OB-PS-IT-HSx2-Dump // HSx4-OB-Dump rotation.

I really don't believe DK's need a huge DPS nerf at all. AE is one thing, but its the boss fights that count in PvE. I know lots of rogues and enhancement shaman that are consistently above DK DPS. I hope Bliz doesn't bend to the QQ and make us feral druids.
PvP-wise, we probably have a few too many tricks. Nerf away!

The 51/0/20 build is what I was using through 76, and it was working quite well. I then decided to respec and my build is now 45/0/26. I have traded the Dancing Rune Weapon for Summon Gargoyle and the five points spent in Blood Gorged were spent in Unholy so that I can have a permanent Ghoul (Master of Ghouls).
I doubt the Gargoyle matches the Dancing Rune Weapon mathematically, however Blood Gorged seems like a waste except on the occasions your health is 3/4 or more full. To me the difference of having a ghoul permanently outweighs the benefit of having an ability that is not always permanent.

I am tired of Blizz nerfing Spec's because they do too well in PVP. Then PVE pays the price. Maybe Blizz should work on a Dampener Field upon entering the PVP system. Something to suppress these so called OP specs. I've played hunter, lock, rogue, and now DK... I have enjoyed all in PVE.. the Blizz gets their nickers in a knot over PVP and poof my PVE toons are next to useless until I can figure out a new spec to increase my DPS.
I realize this post will not do anything except allow me to vent my frustrations. Thanks.
Arcaria Feb 23rd 2009 12:58PM
it's the same frustration a lot of us feel that don't pvp a lot.
They should just do what so many other games have done with pvp and that's simply make damage to other players cut in half or some other percentage.
Nathan Feb 23rd 2009 1:10PM
I agree! I don't play PvP and don't understand why talents and abilities can't be modified as soon as you enter an arena or battleground, so that PvE viability doesn't suffer.

Don't forget the frost build 21/50/0. I can out DPS my Unholy friend in our 25 man Naxx runs.
Borkr Feb 23rd 2009 2:10PM
I can feel the Nerf on the Bloodless comming already. I know it's comming.
Last night I finally poped 80 on my DK alt, My main (Tankadin) made a bunch of gear with blacksmithing for her, and with the 3 epics and the rest the BoE Blacksmith and quest blues I went to my first Heroics. I focused on the Plagueless blood spec, with the rotation OB>HS>DC rince repeat and I pulled nearly 2kDPS. That coupled with the 19K health pool quaifies me for my guilds entry requirements for Nax10. Most of the other classes need to be fully ilvl 187/200 from Heroics to meet my guilds requirements for Nax, so clearly the DK out the gate is OP, and Plagueless seems like easy mode...
JALbert Feb 23rd 2009 3:32PM
Any class can pull 2k+ DPS in dungeon blues when they ding 80. I run with a lock who has no epics and puts out 2600+ on trash and on boss fights as demonology. My first patch run was 3300 DPS, and the only epics I had were the badge trinket and the terribad helm from Sartharion 10. Diseaseless blood underperforms diseased blood up until higher gear levels, but the sheer simplicity makes it better for people who can't play the harder specs well... someone might not have the skill to be putting up big numbers with DW builds, for example, while HUR HUR 3 button DPS makes them do decent, even if they're still not playing out their characters full potential.
Borkr Feb 23rd 2009 4:05PM
Reading is not a strong suit for some, I said my gear consists of only Quest Blues/greens, and BoE Blacksmith gear (90% of the gear is Blacksmith with only the rings and kneck being quest gear). The Epics are the three crafted Titansteel ones, one of which is the 2h mace. The majority of her BoE BS gear is the Savage Saronite lvl 78 stuff. I'm currently severly lacking in +hit and +expertice, and my AP is in the 2800 range unbuffed. see the sheet at (http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Durotan&n=Draugra)
None of my gear is from the Dungeons, in fact I did no dungeons on my alt at all. Actually come to think of it I've never done non-heroic dungeons period. Even with my pali main I never entered a non heroic while leveling. I found the prospect of getting dungeon gear worthless untill 80 when the heroics opened up.
Also I have "played" harder specs, I leveled as deep unholy for a while, then tried some DW unholy in my late 70s but found the extra healing from Blood made my it easier while soloing.
DCoW Feb 23rd 2009 3:38PM
my personal Dk tanking build goes down to will of acherus and heart strike (fricking LOVE it hitting 2 targets), picking up the side talents in frost first tier (their names elude me at the moment)
then finally going down to grab shadow of death in the unholy.
the rotation is pretty nice. single targets get plague strike, icy touch, heart strike x2, then obliterate or death strike depending on the circumstances.
for aoe pulls it's simply just Death n Decay, followed by icy touch, plague strike, and a pestilence.
I personally love the blood tree like my own.
PattestdaBad Feb 24th 2009 3:52PM
According to mmo-champion, Howling Blast and Hungering Cold have switched spots in the frost tree. Doesn't that completely neuter 32/39?
OdinHagen Feb 26th 2009 1:03AM
I'm also a Frost spec dps and quite literally can hit for 6K+ crits with a HB on every mob that is in range. Frost has the most use for big pulls, but even in smaller pulls it still is a huge powerhouse.
Obsidian Feb 28th 2009 12:27AM
Yeah I personally love 21/50/0. I'm doing upwards of 8k dps on aoe pulls and loving it. Ive gotten as much as 9k+ crits with HB and when you add deathchill its just so much better.
Borkr you shouldn't insult other's reading abilities until you fix up your own. He also mentioned that diseasless < diseased until you get fairly good gear. From what I have seen thats true. Even with my current gear I notice an almost 1k dps loss when I switch over to blood disealess and I'm in about half i200 epics half i213. Maybe I just dont put as much effort into it though as I dont enjoy the spec as much (I love how much there is to do with my frost spec)

". . . Dual Wield DPS relies on dual wielding's superior scaling and the ability of Killing Machine to proc off of both weapons."
I thought when Killing Machine was changed to a ppm based ability, it was also modified to only proc off main hand weapon. Did I misunderstand?
Daniel Whitcomb Mar 3rd 2009 2:34PM
When they changed it to PPM, they left the ability for it to proc off both weapons. In other words, 2-handers got 5 PPM, Dual Wielding got 10 PPM.
Sykom Mar 27th 2009 1:20PM
Didn't have time to read all the comments, but I would like to point out that HB and UhB are currently exclusive talents (i.e. only one at a time). Blizzard recognized the power of the combo and put HB just out of reach when going for UhB.
Mordrene Apr 16th 2009 2:43PM
I am frost spec tank 12-50-9, I love to tank i am pretty much a beginner with Death Knight tanking, I have heard that unholy can hold better threat in some cases because of the aoe. Think maybe a unholy tank spec and frost tank spec for differenet situations would make any sense? Maybe that's a stupid question, but in my defense it is 5am ..lol
icejaeger Apr 17th 2009 12:10AM
i personally went with a 10/51/10 build for the new updates. i use howling blast too much to not go for it. overall, testing out my dps i'm rather pleased. haven't tested it in an actual heroic/raid yet, but have a feeling it'll be as good if not higher than before. this is for a dual wield spec.
blood;
butchery, subversion, bladed armor, of course
frost;
imp IT, RPM, black ice, nerves, icy talons and imp icy talons, annihilation, killing machine, glacier rot, death chill, merciless, rime, , blood of the north, frost strike, guile, tundra, howling blast. all full points.
unholy:
vicious strikes, virulence, epidemic and ravenous dead.
glyphs;
major - icy touch, plague strike, disease
minor - pestilence, horn of winter, raise dead (primarily for raising one and using death pact in a situation)
i start out of course with icy touch and plague strike, then blood strike and death chill/howling blast when available. then i hit pestilence, let it sit until blood boil is cool, then hit blood boil. in between, hitting frost strike when it's up. then start back over with icy touch and plague strike... still working on the rotation a bit, but overall i'm liking it though it's taking some time to adapt to.
