WoW Patch 3.1 PTR Druid changes, part 2
On to Restoration, but not before we get a peek at our shiny...well, woodsy...new Tier 8 shoulders --

It reminds me a lot of Tier 5, which I quite liked. And look at the little paws! And the moon has craters on it!
LIVING SEED: This talent now accounts for your ineffective healing, rather than effective.
If I understand this correctly (and I may not, so please drop a comment if I get this wrong), this is a pretty sizable buff that will allow for the talent's effect to scale much better than it currently does. Rather than granting your target a Living Seed for 30% of the effective heal you landed, it'll grant a Living Seed for 30% of what you actually healed. Which is to say, if you land a 6K crit Regrowth on a target but they were only down 2K health, Living Seed will now bloom on the next hit for 1,800 rather than 600. This almost seems like a bug fix rather than a buff; on the live realms Living Seed actually punishes you by healing for less if you're religious about keeping your target topped-off, but I'm not going to quibble.
IMPROVED MARK OF THE WILD: Now also increases all of your total attributes by 1/2%.
Nice! The talent had already gotten a big improvement going into Wrath, and this is a very welcome buff. I have IMotW even as a feral just because it's so good right now, and I'll be even more glad to have it.
NEW TALENT -- IMPROVED BARKSKIN: Increases the damage reduction granted by your Barkskin spell by 5/10%, and increases your resistance to Dispel mechanics by an additional 30/60% while under the effect of Barkskin.
I was praying this would wind up somewhat earlier in the Restoration tree, but no dice; it's pretty far down and inaccesible to anyone without 45 points in the Resto tree. This talent is pretty clearly aimed at the depressing time that Resto's been having in PvP recently, although I have to question both the placement and ultimate usefulness of the talent. A 10% increase to Barkskin may not really be enough to help versus the insane burst that DPS are currently dishing out, and the most dangerous dispels we've faced this season have come from Death Knights, who -- as of 3.1 -- won't be able to do that anymore. And if the talent's current tooltip is accurate, this only helps resist dispel attempts on yourself and not your partners. Well, we'll see. This seems like the sort of talent you want while being focus-fired, which is guaranteed to happen in PvP, so I'm going to reserve judgment for the moment
REPLENISH: This talent is now re-named "Revitalize" and now also works with Wild Growth.
Resto Druids have been asking if it would be possible to get Replenish yoked to WG for a bit. The Revitalize proc is almost inarguably more useful for DPS than it is for a tank (and WG is the go-to raid healing spell in our arsenal), so we'll see if the talent becomes more popular. Right now it's one of the most routinely jettisoned Restoration talents.
TREE OF LIFE: You can now use Nature's Grasp and Thorns while within this form.
The Nature's Grasp change is going to help a great deal in PvP, because having to blow through hundreds of mana to shift forms and cast that one bitty spell was insanely inefficient. Then again, considering that you can't cast Cyclone or Entangling Roots in Tree form either, you can make a pretty compelling argument that ToL is almost more troube than it's worth, at least for arena. The Thorns change is going to remove a huge irritant to PvE Restos as it's one of those spells that you should really have on the tanks at all times, and shifting in and out in order to cast and recast a short-duration buff is extremely annoying.
I'll be back later today with a look at the undocumented changes with the current PTR build, and Dan O'Halloran will also have his guide to pre-raid Cat gear for today's "Shifting Perspectives," so hang tight.
Patch 3.1 brings us Ulduar, dual specs, significant changes to all the classes, and more! We've got you covered from top to bottom with our Guide to Patch 3.1.

Those druid T8 shoulds are GORGEOUS!
Deviaan Feb 24th 2009 1:09PM
Why can't I do entangling roots in ToL
Entangling ROOTS
I would really like to do ENTANGLING ROOTS in tree form
just makes too much sense
I just feel like the Tree of Life should be able to do Entangling ROOTS in the interest of making sense.
just my 2 cents

I'd like to see a similar change made for Moonkins. It would be nice to be able to cast MoTW or GoTW in moonkin form. pls.
Ishy Feb 24th 2009 6:39PM
Entangling roots would be good in tree form, but it should also root the caster as it would be your feet that you are using.

Those T8 shoulders are GORGEOUS!
I'm glad that the tier set is going back to a 'nature-ish' theme - the T7 sets aren't druidic enough for my liking.
rekked Feb 24th 2009 8:57AM
You couldn't have said it better. Tier 7 looks like your run-of-the-mill caster set. As a restoration druid, I couldn't be happier with the woody looks of this shoulders.
Evi Feb 24th 2009 1:58PM
Agreed. T7 is pretty, but these new shoulders scream "DRUID!" much, much more.
Rob M Feb 24th 2009 6:25AM
Hmm...not exactly sweeping changes.
Any idea when it's expected to go live?
Aceral Feb 24th 2009 6:27AM
I like the look of those shoulders. Thx for the run down so soon after these patch notes became available. Hurrah for being able to cast thorns in ToL :).

I'm fairly certain that you've got the change to living seed wrong. As I understand it where it says inefective heals it means heals that dont do anything.
So Im guessing its primarily going to be overheals but it might also include healing that is blocked by things like mortal strike and loatheb's necrotic aura.
Using your example of healing if you crit for 6K but the target is only down 2K you would have 4K of ineffective(overhealed) heals. 30% of 4K is only 1.2k heals.
I'm not sure if this actually works out as a buff or a nerf.
Inifekt Feb 24th 2009 7:12AM
Honestly, I cannot agree with you, simply because over heals are not 100%.
"Living Seed: This talent now accounts for your ineffective healing, rather than effective."
It doesn't say that it's one or the other. It's stating it accounts for it, read: includes it. So therefore, it would be the entire heal cast, not the 2k or the 4k from the said example.
Gorehorn Feb 24th 2009 7:35AM
I'm fairly certain Allison is spot on with her interpretation.
Factoring in things like MS-Debuffs would be overly complex for players to comprehend as well as very hard to code for Blizzard (if possible at all)
Moroan Feb 24th 2009 8:25AM
Actually right I think you might be right.
Blizzard did word that really badly though. It says ineffective rather than effective. I don't know if I'm interpreting ineffective correctly but the way blizzard worded it sounds like theyre saying one rather than the other. They really should have said "ineffectve healing, rather than JUST effective" it means the same thing but its easier to understand.
vhdblood Feb 24th 2009 12:18PM
What you have to understand is that ineffective heals include the effective heal in them.
I do a 6k Regrowth crit on a target that heals for 2k.
Ineffective is 6k, effective is 2k.
They didn't feel the need to mention that it's in addition to, because it's not.
FYI, for anyone who doesn't understand yet, it's like saying I want a pepperoni pizza, including the pepperoni. :D

now those are real druid shoulderpads. ^.^
cchhiipp Feb 24th 2009 6:41AM
I'm very glad that Primal Gore is only 1 talent point. Any more points and I'd have to sacrifice something I really wouldn't want to.
As for the T8 shoulders, I love them! They do remind me of T5, which I was sad to get rid of back in the day. I love the little nod to all 3 talent trees in the design.

Guess I am the only one who isn't 100% happy with those shoulderpads... I prefer simplicity.
Zelius Feb 24th 2009 7:26AM
I don't really like those shoulderpads. I was hoping for something that would fit feral more, this time around. Something with lots of fur and claws/teeth.
And am I the only that thinks the lack of new forms in this patch is total BS? Especially since they promised they would be in the next major content patch.
LenteP Feb 24th 2009 7:30AM
As far as I recall they haven't promised the new skins with the next major patch, they will come tho, but just... when they're ready^^
