WoW Patch 3.1 PTR Paladin changes
After a wait that I was beginning to suspect wouldn't end, the 3.1 PTR is finally online and we have some new 3.1 patch notes. Though there are some noticable changes announced earlier this month missing from the latest patch notes, all of them seem to be in the current PTR build, only undocumented (most undocumented notes here are via MMO-Champion). As with all undocumented changes -- they may change at any time. For a complete rundown of the changes listed in the patch notes (and the changes not listed in the patch notes!), read on.
- Auras will now persist through death.
- Exorcism can now be used on all targets, but is now a guaranteed critical strike vs Undead and Demon type mobs.
- Shield of Righteousness now deals 130% of block value + 520 at the highest rank. It no longer causes a high amount of threat.
- Blessing of Kings is now trainable at level 20. Removed from talent trees.
Protection
- Divinity, new Protection talent: Tier 1 Protection talent, increases healing done by and to you by 1/2/3/4/5%.
- Sacred Duty: rank 1 now increases Stamina by 4%.
- Shield of the Templar: gives your Avenger's Shield a 33/66/100% chance to silence targets hit by it for 3 sec and reduces all damage taken by 1/2/3%.
- Judgements of the Just: now reduces the cooldown of your Hammer of Justice by 10/20 sec, increases the duration of your Seal of Justice effect by 0.5/1 sec, in addition to its previous effect.
- Avenger's Shield: damage has been increased for all ranks.
- Guarded by the Light: reduces spell damage taken by 3/6% and gives a 50/100% chance to refresh the duration of your Divine Plea when you hit an enemy.
- Holy Shield damage slightly increased across all ranks.
- Ardent Defender: now a 3 point talent, reducing damage taken by 10/20/30%.
- One-Handed Weapon Specialization: now a 3 point talent, increasing damage done with 1-handers by 4/7/10%.
- Blessing of Sanctuary: grants 2% of maximum displayed mana when the target blocks, parries, or dodges a melee attack.
- Divine Guardian now redirects damage "(up to a maximum of 150/300% of the Paladin's health)."
- Improved Devotion Aura: increases the amount healed on any target affected by any of your Auras by 2/4/6%.
- Improved Hammer of Justice: now a 2 point talent, reducing the cooldown of Hammer of Justice by 10/20 sec.

Yeah, after being a total joke for 4 years, we wouldn't want ret pve damage to be taken seriously for more than a few months.
hpavc Feb 24th 2009 8:44AM
Improved devotion aura used to increase armor bonus of you devotion aura +50% as well.
Elhannan Feb 24th 2009 8:49AM
Not so sure Ret DPS is receiving a nerf overall, there - not when you take into account the addition of Exorcism to a Ret's standard rotation now.
Have to see on this one.
Ikohn Feb 24th 2009 9:08AM
Considering we can use Exorcism on most mobs in Naxx I would say this is a definately a nerf. Allowing the use on the living creatures of WoW will help slightly, but not enough to compensate.
I remember hearing a rumor of buffing vengeance to 5 stacks. I am curious if we will see such a change to compensate for these nerfs.
Ignatius Feb 24th 2009 9:46AM
In 3.0.8, it was 5 stacks for a time, then it was changed to 3, but the tooltip was still 5.
Blizzard changed the tooltip in 3.0.9.

all im gunna say is that im upset about the ret nerf, now to go to the pally forum and rage...followed by all mages spaming ROFL GG OP RET NERF /facepalm
Sinthar Feb 24th 2009 9:22AM
As a mage, ill say no such thing!!! (plus i can type whole words not just 'text speech') - please dont paint ALL us mages with the same brush. Esp as my alt is a 79 Prot pally, ret for pvp. I feel your concern, esp with the arc buff (again as a mage i STILL think thats silly - talented regen for arcane spec is 120% mana regen when in combat as far as my brief look at mmo says it - i just cant believe it so im gonna check again when i get back from work).
Personally the prot buffs seem nice for my pally, esp as it will free up a few talent points, and helps his very poor mana regen (hes a bit overgeared so just doesnt get enough regen thro healing atm - the last run it was only during the boss fight when i said 'i need more healing' before we realised the healer wasnt actually a healer, but dps, and so was the druid...ooopps (he'd respecced just before the instance without telling anyone). Still downed him, just was abit close with a ret pally healing me near the end (Lay on Hands i love u)

BIG RAGE EXPLOSION topic of the day.
Gutted personally, though I have my first child due in 2 weeks blizz have until the wife lerts me start playing again to fix if these changes to ret go live.
bARTH Mar 3rd 2009 5:26PM
Hope you get a chance to learn some English before then too.
Leelad Mar 4th 2009 5:31AM
Seriously? A comment on spelling on a blog with no edit function? To a post over a week old.
You quite clearly are 1 of 2 things...1 an FP troll or an aspergers sufferer who showers in irony.
Your name is a superb example of grammar. Perhaps you could enroll us both on an English course.
That said I'd still go for an FP troll no one is retarded enough to go looking for posts by someone to comment on spelling.

Don't you guys see? Ret Nerfs is now a long standing tradition to Blizzard. They can't release a patch WITHOUT nerfing Ret in some way. That'll show those underpowered Death Knights.
Michael Feb 24th 2009 9:28AM
"underpowered Death Knights"
LOL
Never thought I would see those words on the same line.
Overall I am pleased with the changes, my prot pally alt is happy today.
Ge Feb 24th 2009 9:08AM
So Blessing of Sanctuary no longer reduces all damage taken by 3%?
Mattimus Feb 24th 2009 4:50PM
That's what I was wondering, too.
From the looks of it, they removed the BoSanc function for other classes, and moved the 3% damage reduction to a GLYPH for Divine Plea.
That seems kinda dumb to me. I'd rather not have to glyph for the same damage reduction effect I used to get in my talent tree.
McRaider Feb 24th 2009 9:07AM
"Guarded by the Light: reduces spell damage taken by 3/6% and gives a 50/100% chance to refresh the duration of your Divine Plea when you hit an enemy."
Does this mean that I can have divine plea on me 24/7 if I hit an enemy during that time? O.O
Tumleren Feb 24th 2009 11:15AM
Yup
That's what the tooltip says at least. I'd imagine it'd get nerfed down to "cannot occur more than once every minute" or something along the lines of that. Constant DP is pretty OP as a tank imo. Not that I'm not happy about it - It's awesome, but it's too much
Wolftech Feb 24th 2009 11:25AM
Yep... and to that the new glyph that gives divine plea 3% damage reduction..
Glyph of Divine Plea (new) - While Divine Plea is active, you take 3% reduced damage from all sources.
...Means a constant 3% less damage :) As an 80 Prot Pally (and thats all my pally has ever been... I even leveled Prot), I am loving these changes for the most part. Sure, some talents I loved are changed, and it looks like my build will be include a little more holy and ret trees, but its all good in the hood.
Isaac Feb 24th 2009 9:09AM
Don't forget about Ulduar containing Giant mobs (most likely), effectively losing 3% damage through Crusade... loss of the Sense Undead glyph (1% damage), around 5% damage loss from the RV/Fanaticism nerf, around 1% damage from Holy Wrath... and you're looking at a potential 10% damage loss.
I know not everything's final, but let's hope all of these Ret changes don't make it live.
Bizzaro Feb 24th 2009 9:24AM
Instead of nerfing Ret " to the ground baby" how about nefing DK's a bit.... It is sad to see Dk's in mostly blues out DPSing Well Geared/ Well played Rets..... Perhaps it's time to get my DK past lvl 60...
