The Queue: Dye job

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky will be your host today.
So the Patch 3.1 PTR has dropped and all the madness associated with it has started. I always find it interesting to watch how some ideas and changes morph from "AMG! Imma gonna stop paying MY $15 A MONTH right now and you're gonna be out of a job because Titan's Grip didn't need to be nerfed!" to "WoW! These new Warrior changes make the Titan's Grip nerf pointless! I am so uber again!" I /facepalm at that sort of thought progression, as I suspect many of you do as well.Cielago asked:
"How how long do I have to get title and mount rewards for the achievements associated with Wrath raids and heroics? Is it until patch 3.1 when Ulduar gear will make them easier? Until the next expansion? Some time in between?"
There has been no official information. However we can look to the past to predict the future. Blizzard removed the ability to get the "Hand of A'dal" title in patch 3.0.2, along with the bear mount from Zul'Aman. I would expect them to do the same to all raiding titles and rewards with the 4.0.2 patch that will come about right before the release of the next expansion. I would expect you'll always be able to get the achievements, however. It'll just be the rewards that will change.
However with that said, the focus on achievements to delineate hard mode encounters and progression tactics is something new. Blizzard might have a different game plan in store for us, and they might just allow the titles and mounts to be achieved indefinitely. That would be rather cool I think, since plowing through Sarth 3D at level 100 will just make me smile, much like 2-manning Onyxia did back in BC (my resto shaman friend and my prot warrior took 45 minutes to do it, was great fun).
Derick asked...
"Why are there four color sets for T8 armor? 10 man, 25 man, and then what? Are they just re-coloring for PvP sets again?"
The second part of your question first. No, they are not re-coloring armor for PvP sets. Blizzard has said numerous times that one of the "mistakes" of BC was to make the PvP sets look the same as the raiding sets, and that they've learned from their mistakes and will make the sets visually different. There is no indication that they're going back on this.
Now why the different colors? As you said two of them will be for 10-man and 25-man sets, but that leaves two more. There's a bunch of possible answers, but all of it will be speculation more or less. Elizabeth Harper, our Editor-in-Chief, suggests that this change might be a prelude to armor dyes, something that would be very cool. Alex Ziebart points out that Blizzard has been doing a ton of re-coloring lately on many models, making it easier to add some variety into raid content. I tend to agree with Alex, and think that the re-coloring is just there for NPCs / mobs to have.

Let her choose her class and race based on what appeals to her, for whatever reason. It doesn't have to make sense to you, just to her. If she gets emotionally attached to her character, she's more likely to be motivated to learn to play it, even if it's kind of hard. If you can have her "meet" some high level characters of various classes so she can see what cool things they do, that could motivate her in her leveling.
A note on druids: a lot of the insane quest chain abilities are now trainable. Druids are lovely to play, and if you're going to have just one character, it's pretty neat to have one that can melee or ranged dps, tank, or healer all in one. Druids are the variety pack of classes.

paladin.
you get to heal yourself. you get to wear mail/plate for more armor.

I would totally say a hunter for your wife's first toon. From a noob standpoint it is immensely comforting to have a pet (you're not so *alone* :D) and I wouldn't worry about pet management so much. Since the changes where you don't have to train them or feed them so much they're really no trouble at all. The same can't be said for locks and allllll of their spells, and the different types of demons, and oh, let's not forget keeping track of the soul shards. Hunter. Much easier for a beginner IMO. (And failing that, then yeah, I'd say pally.)

Definitely Druid. It has all the main game mechanics that she can learn in one class. They have Warrior Rage, Rogue Energy/Combo Points, and Caster/Healer mana. She can play every class role. The first 10 levels will be caster dps until she does the quests for Bear Form, then she learns tanking melee dps. Then at 20 she gets cat form for faster melee dps. And healing all in-between.
Your mana regens in feral forms, so she can start a fight, finish it with low health, and have full mana to heal up. Then she starts the next fight and her mana regens to full while she's in form using it. It's a very low maintenance class.
Not to mention the Druid quests early on at levels 10, 12, and 16 are very druidy, and fun. The Emerald Dream lore is easy to get into as a Druid. Druid has my favorite low-level class quests, for both lore and ease.

As far as games and RPGs go, give her any class. Overall, WoW is VERY noob friendly. It's the only game I've played where you see people play to max level and still not know what half of their spells do.

My first impression on the four colors thing was from a priest perspective, you've got two armor sets per tier, and you've got two tiers.
So one healing 10 man, one healing 25 man, one dps 10 man, one dps 25 man.
But that would lead to paladins requiring 6 colors, so I'm not sure this is the right answer.

I know this isn't "ask a beta tester" anymore, but with the upcoming dual specs coming in 3.1:
Are all of the action bars going to be set to a spec? I'm mostly asking from the point of view of a Druid, who when I respec from Resto to Feral I have to re-do 3 or 4 action bars (caster form, cat, bear, and tree). Having to re-do bars constantly would be a huge pain, but that being said, i'm totally looking forward to the change!
nbcaffeine Feb 25th 2009 2:54PM
Yes. ABs will swap too. Ain't that grand?
Rowan Feb 25th 2009 4:17PM
Yes. When you switch specs, your action bar will switch to the last configuration associated with that spec.
So basically, setup your action bar for your spec, switch specs, set that one up, and then you can alternate between the two with nothing more than a click of a button.
Also, glyphs work the same. Your glyphs will change into the last known configuration associated with that spec.

The armor colors are for different suits. DPS, Tank, Heal, etc...
Open Atlas and loot at any class with more than a single 10 man suit, and a single 25 man suit. The colors change.

Except all the hybrid sets for Tier 7, Season 5, and etc. are the same color in a given tier. You only get different colors when you go to a different tier. There's only 2 tiers of Tier 8, the Tier 8 armor will only be 2 colors. So it's more likely to be NPC variety. There's plenty of posts on wowhead about players wanting the exact armor shade that an NPC is wearing.
FifthDream Feb 25th 2009 2:53PM
Ugh, yeah, armor dyes. I was just thinking last night how much i want this. I'm really tired of looking like a clown, with my mismatched red-blue-yellow-green armor. ;\
dpoyesac Feb 25th 2009 3:05PM
Wouldn't it be nice if the different colors were for Horde/Alliance armor sets? Maybe pink and pastel for the Alliance and red & black for Horde -- we'd be able to tell the faction of the yahoos standing around in Dalaran just from the models, without having to mouse over 'em.

Prediction time, everyone: aside from likely getting a level upgrade to 80, how do you suspect the holiday bosses (Coren Direbrew, Headless Horseman) and their loot will change? Will the mounts be gone? Will they give out new loot or just have upgraded old loot? If so, is it worthwhile to keep the old loot we got from them?
Rick Feb 25th 2009 3:22PM
I didn't see this put forward here, but perhaps the different color sets are for when you complete one of the hard bosses on the hard mode's described elsewhere (leaving three towers, not killing drakes, that sort of thing), not necissarly a 8.5 set, but more of a Tier8Red or Tier8Blue thing. Or maybe there is some minor difference, but again connected to achieving by finishing the boss in question with out taking out it's 'objective' first. At least I hope so, it will give me reasons to go back again and again to try those same encounters with out taking out 100 mechognomes, or doing the whole fight on the choppers, no tanks sort of thing.
Just two cents.
Rowan Feb 25th 2009 4:22PM
Will there be any limited time achievements, pets, mounts, quests, etc. once 3.1 hits? Like things that are only attainable/doable within X amount of weeks of 3.1's release. I ask because I wont be playing WoW again until May and as such, I don't want to miss out. Thanks,
Kara Feb 25th 2009 5:09PM
I agree that the pvp gear should not look the same as the raiding gear but!...you would think they could of made them look a little cooler? is there anything that says the pvp gear later on will look cooler? right now i feel like i'm walking around in old lvl up gear, Is the any chance they will bring back some of the old fraction pvp gear?
Ness Feb 25th 2009 6:28PM
hey where do you download the PTR client to, and once that is done, how do you long onto the PTR realm and not the live realms?
CallMeIrd Feb 25th 2009 6:28PM
Think they'll ever make slow mounts useful again by having them scale to riding skill, possibly with an optional fee?
