WoW Moviewatch: No Point: Stretching Time
As a note, if you're having trouble viewing this video through the stream, there are many more viewing options at the good Baron's blog. I highly recommend downloading the HD options for best experience.
I first got word a few days ago. A small wisp of warning, a whisper that today's big news was coming. Time passes, days go by. Then, yesterday, a heads up sent by Selserene (whom I thank vastly for the message). Then, a promotional message on the front of one of my favorite sites, Myndflame. And, finally, a link! Confirmation! It was true my friends -- the good Baron Soosdon has released his 30 minute masterpiece, No Point: Stretching Time.
Now, I feel that me reviewing Baron Soosdon is a little like a college newspaper fantasy columnist trying to review Peter Jackson, but I'll share my thoughts on his new movie.
Obviously, I can't say enough good things about how pretty it all looks. The landscaping alone is worth thirty minutes of drooling. The Baron had some help with this, it seems (such as the inimitable Bullshitmaster). His team really pulled off an absolutely gorgeous world.
The music is strong, of course. The Baron has a flair for choosing fast-paced music that lends a sense of movement to his stories. Since there's no dialogue in "No Point," the music is critical to the sense of pacing and action.
I loved (LOVED) the "future" Azerothian opening. Guns, terminals, and technology lent a sense of realism to the story. I know that sounds odd, so let me explain. Most WoW machinima is based on the in-game graphics and action. By going outside that box to a future-world, the Baron creates a sense of lore. The setting leaves a simple three-dimensional environment, and opens up an important fourth dimension -- time. The events you see now are the result of other actions, and the current events will have consequences down the road. Cause and effect can be characters on their own, and the Baron seems to make good use of them.
I think the plot's open to interpretation. To summarize, though, a Blood Elf tries to steal an artifact. Said artifact ends up in the past, where it is found during a fishing trip. Thus the teaser line, "How wrong can one fishing trip go?"
The last thing I want to mention is that I love the use of Gnomes as main characters. For that alone, I tip my hat to the good Baron Soosdon. The characters, as used by the Baron, are compelling and identifiable. You can feel real empathy for them, and they stand out in a sea of Super Cool Blood Elf Hardcore Badasses.

Excellent video, 100% grade A material

Yet again another unwatchable film of his due to awful, awful inappropriate music. Saying that thou the music Soos uses is always inappropriate anywhere other then a cheesy euro disco. Lovely visuals then he spanks it up the wall with the soundtrack. It didn't get far enough into this one to know for sure but I guess the emo goth girl singing over break beat will show up at some point.

He's takin' notes. He knows the rules. He's no stranger to your love. He'll spice it up with some Linkin Park and Hansen just for you in the future, to be sure.
BaronSoosdon Feb 25th 2009 12:34PM
Duh, then obviously your music taste is horribly wrong.
WRONG.
Omestes Feb 25th 2009 12:37PM
Why the hell do all video makers use eurotrash or crappy mainstream metal? Can't someone use classical, something simple prerecorded in Garage Band in all of 13 minutes?
BaronSoosdon Feb 25th 2009 12:41PM
I was thinking of using this Microsoft Songsmith remix of Rickroll in my next video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nd2oDClUw20

That is the worst embedded video app I've ever seen. Seriously, is its buffer limited to something like 30k? Even the Vimeo one annoys me for this, since I can't watch it in anything other than a postage stamp size, and if I go for full screen, its like watching an 8bit cinematic for all the glorious pixels.

I got more stream options at my blog: http://tinyurl.com/nopointmovie
From what I hear, GameTube does not stream so well for non-EU people. A French conspiracy perhaps? :P

Was that Tauren using a Portal gun? o_o
BaronSoosdon Feb 25th 2009 12:38PM
Actually the Portal gun was using the tauren.

I just finished watching it, it's fucking brilliant. The music is spot on as always and fits the mood.
I would recommend downloading it and not watching from the stream though. The download quality is amazing.

@Soosdon
I feel bad for ripping on your work now because it is lovely to look at but you consistently alienate people with your music choice. I like Atari Teenage Riot but learnt quickly not to play it at parties as it's not really appropriate.
Standard disclaimer here that your work is infinately better than anything my talentless arse could churn out but just because you like a particular style of music doesn't mean you need to force it into all your work.
There was that lovely peice of Mach that came out around Xmas time with the Belf Rogue going after Onyxia. The music to that was nicely different. Not Nu Metal and not Eurocore and it worked really nicely.
I remember reading your replies to that and I hoped that you might start working with different styles.
I dunno. Regret saying anything at all now.

Well, my music taste is really perverted.
In addition to this trance, electronic music stuff I really like metal too.
I'd love to do a machinima video to some black metal song, but WoW is too happy game for that. Therefore, I'm gonna stick around with something more mainstream-ish in the future.
I got many songs and many plans in my mind, from trippy downtempo-DnB to industrial metal.
I said to myself that 2009 will be a year of change, my goal is to try out new things in machinimas as much as possible.
All in all, a metal video is something that I wish to do sooner than later. Technical issues stop me from doing it (WoW model viewer needs to grow and develop to support certain things).
And of course.. a rickroll. I will not be ever complete until I've made a full rickroll machinima.

NO !!!! NOOO !!!!
TRANCE FOREVER, keep up the good work Baron Soosdon. Ever since i saw your Escapism Vol 0 Video, i LOVED your music choices. As a matter of fact, i listen to DJ RX - Code of Silence at least daily since.
Peace, Love, Unity, Respect :)

Very interesting watch... certainly not what I had expected from a 'WoW movie'. Not at all.
First thoughts:-
Technicaly, I don't have much to criticise. The use of effects/cuts and angles to 'disguise' various areas of Azeroth or portray the mood of the scene was great, and more importantly was not overdone. The pace of the movie was good, although I feel it was perhaps a little on the long side, some of the 'running' scenes did feel slightly repetitive.
The soundtrack was varied and interesting, it matched the tone of the movie well. I know, and the author probably does too, that you'll never please everyone with your choice of soundtrack so sometimes its just better to be selfish and choose what you like.
The one big criticism I have is that the story doesn't really flow as well as it could. While the two main characters are developed well it's never very clear where the story is going. The plot often feels jagged and broken, with sudden scene changes and a lot of 'unexplained' events. Whilst this may have been part of the authors intention, a tad more 'narrative' (no, not necessarily through speech or text) would have been welcome.
All that aside, a very enjoyable watch. Bravo.
PS. I want a Gnome :( They are so adorable!
Armaroth Feb 25th 2009 1:49PM
I loved it. Kudos Baron.
Although I like trance, it could use some other music now and then to satisfy the crowd.
BaronSoosdon Feb 25th 2009 1:59PM
It does! First plan was to have the movie to be 100% trance but then I came to my senses.
Now it's something like 60/50 :)
lownwolf Feb 25th 2009 1:45PM
The technical aspects are good. The cuts, especially during the fast paced scenes, were awesome. I however, did not watch the whole thing due to loading issues. But I have a question... Why is it always a music video! Much less a 30 Minutes music video! I was tired of watching the story by 10-15 mins in but stuck around for the technique and to see what awesome looking stuff you'd pull up next. With a bit of good voice acting, the story could really come across so much better and criticisms on the story would stop.
BaronSoosdon Feb 25th 2009 1:57PM
You said the magic word.
GOOD voice acting. That stuff is not easy to come by. And by good I mean good in every aspect - the voice itself, the ability to bring the character to life and of course the recording equipment.
