You may have noticed an interesting little change in the 3.1 patch notes: ground mounts are now able to swim! This made us curious: how does a Mechanostrider swim? How does a Kodo swim? So, Adam and I ran off to the test realms to capture video of it all. And, before you ask, no bears were harmed in the making of these videos. (The Talbuks, though, whose heads seem to be under water even when you're on the surface, we make no promises about.)
Alliance Mounts
Elekk, Draenei Racial Mount
Horse, Human Racial Mount
Mechanostrider, Gnome Racial Mount
Nightsaber, Night Elf Racial Mount
Ram, Dwarf Racial Mount
But that's not all! We've got more mounts just on the next page. Check out Horde mounts and other assorted mounts:
Also, a little engineering wooden row boat. For above water use only, of course. But, still, so cute! Could be BOE and usable by all, not just engineers. And, if they wanted to give it some sort've requirement, they could just make it so that you have to be a grand master fisherman to use, maybe.
I would love to take my little row boat out and fish in the frozen sea and elsewhere.
What happens now: You're running around the map on your land mount and you come to deep water... normally you would dismount and have to swim a few paces before reaching land. Next you would have to summon you're land mount and trot off again.
What I expected to see w/"swimming mounts": You're running around the map on your land mount and you come to deep water... you keep running straight and instead of dismounting you stay on your mount who swims across to the land. (with you still on its back... mount's head out of the water)
From what I can figure, we won't be seeing these things this far underwater much. Since mounted swim speed is the same as normal swim speed, any underwater questing or grinding will be done without a mount (at least they will be after the first spell is cast, since you can't remount underwater)
The function of swimming mounts is pretty much just so you won't have to resummon after crossing a river. Nothing that major.
Most of these animations are slight modifications of normal walking. The only realistic one among the alliance mounts is the Mechanostrider. That one really appears to be swimming, though I'm not sure what's to be done about rusting.
Also, that horse was ridiculous. Wearing plate, at the same time; I'd like to see that happen.
It seems this is the first step toward 'proper' aquatic mounts that increase your swimming speed (turtles, orcas, rays, submarines). I think this is more than what most of us expected. Instead of "not dismounting when hitting water" we're actually seeing the first attempts at underwater travel.
I can see it now for the Maelstrom x-pac: One or more new levels of Riding to allow us to use 100%/280% aquamounts.
I cant wait to finally be able to do this. I don't care about underwater swimming speed, what I care about is having to re-summon my mount every time I drift too far towards the shore or mis-jump a slightly too deep river. That's what this update is about, not making it faster, just removing one of the little annoyances.
As for swimming mounts, if they come out, i want a refund on my druid's aquatic form. because at that point it becomes a waste of a form.
Well im reading all these comments and i dont see a problem. there easy to fix problems. #1 blizz can add more underwater content like Sunwell. when thats done they could also add alot of new things for proffestions that can make it easy and fun. And as far as the druid waterform. ....WOW did u see the videos up there....there slow and druids can move extra fast so stop QQing . i have a druid as also a Dk,warlock, please people. please stop QQing about every little problem u have about a class u dont even play. Like the comment "its not fair that a DK can heal while in combat with out stoping dmg" WOW lol do u even have a Deathknight. the 4% really isnt that much of a boost really. YOU WILL ALWAYS NEED HEALERS. and as far as them being overpowered in pvp....omg i know you have all seen a Dk get kitted around. its all about what calss/spec vs. class/spec. i mean come on. Mages vs. hunters, warrior vs mage, ITS all rock papper sissors in world of warcraft usally. OF course there will always be a execption. A player who is class is weak against another will always win even if the particular class is a hard match up for him if the PLAYER FAILS AT PVP. there is absoultly no way for blizzard to make everything So perfect for us because WE PLAY THE CHARACTERS , we all play diffenterntly now its true that blizz is trying to make it to were every class can battle another. but truth be told. we can do it now. Stop blaming blizzard for UNFAIRNESS in the game and how you think its SO UNFAIR. Its very simple . Blame yourself! THE QQ'ers of WOW are ruining the game for us all who accutally do alittle hard work and reseach and TRAIN and PRACTICE in order to get better. NOTHING WILL BE SPOON FED TO U. As for those of u that dont QQ of every little thing in the world i dotn want u to get affended at all by my message, im simply stating the truth and if u dont belive me or think im wrong consider this. "frostmage can hit with a frostbolt for 8k. he fires his shot at the warrior thinking he will surely destroy him. BUT WAIT uh oh the warrior accutally knows what hes doing and REFLECTS. so please for the people who are crying just think about what your talking aobut. im sure u can come up witha way to block it too.
Wow, someone went off the deep end... I find it ironic and somewhat cool that the worst looking land mount (chicken) just looks awesome underwater. Kind of reminds of of T-rex's swimming.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see this impacting water form/druid. In water form you get a good speed boost while swimming, while it's mentioned in the article that mounted swimming speed is the same as unmounted swimming speed.
So, while your sabre is doggy-paddling along, I'll be blasting by you in the acknowledged UGLIEST form in the game!
(*HINT* Blizz PLEASE do something about druid forms!)

Do you swim faster on a mount?
Ne0nguy Feb 27th 2009 10:49PM
No.
Mounted swim speed is the same as your unmounted swim speed.
Stomp Mar 1st 2009 1:44PM
Nope. You still swim slow as molasses.
Evi Mar 1st 2009 2:06PM
Well that's silly. What's the point of making them swim if you don't even move faster!

I'm disappointed.
Mechastriders should have their legs retract, and a little propeller come out.
jbodar Feb 28th 2009 12:44AM
They should also make the Transformer noise when they do. Think of all the ruined gamer pants...
Rodrigo Feb 27th 2009 10:55PM
Does my Mechano-Hog swim as well?

Completely agree w/Daniel.

The saber looked like they just took the regular nightsaber swimming animation (which looks good) and made it larger (which doesn't).
I fully agree about the horse.

diving mounts? Thats the most rediculous thing added to the game in quite a while.
