WoW Moviewatch: Boombox
Okay, I admit it. I missed an obvious part of the punchline here until I did my due diligence research after the fact. When I first loaded up Atraira's music video for Boombox, I didn't get it right away. I dug the music, thought the message was great ("Music can bring the world together!"), and then was rightly confused at the end. I did notice that the singers were obsessed with "boiled goose," so I did a bit of Google-fu. Then I got it.
The song itself is actually written and performed by The Lonely Island. You probably remember them as the chaps who sang a song about their parts in a box or a good "Lazy Sunday." Suddenly, the song became that much funnier, since I understood it was satire comedy.
At any rate, the video itself is actually pretty good. I enjoy the two male Draenei as singers, and thought their costuming was well chosen and quite inspired. The milieus of old stuffy men spontaneously dancing worked very well against the lyrics.
And if you're like me, you can probably still enjoy the message of "Music will bring the world together!" I refuse to let go of that.

I'm a bit on the slow side apparently. Yeah, the song is kinda funny, it's definitely humorous writing.
Though, I don't quite get what it is Satire of. To quote wikipedia, because I couldn't think of a good definition myself... "the purpose of satire is not primarily humor in itself so much as an attack on something of which the author strongly disapproves, using the weapon of wit."
So yeah, what exactly is it that this song is supposed to be mocking?

Incredibad (Boombox is a track of Lonely Island's Incredibad album) is a takeoff of several genres of popular music, mostly hip hop and relatives (someone who's more of a music nerd than I am could probably be more specific). It's more of a parody than a satire, really, and even then it's less about sending up musical genres and more about how hip hop is just a nice way to do musical comedy that pokes fun at all sorts of things.
Boombox pokes fun at the idea that (dance) music can change the world, but it's not satire in the sense of being serious criticism because no one seriously believes that music can do this. It exaggerates the real feelings that people have when they listen to music for comedic effect. (One could probably find songs/music videos/other things that Boombox may be a more direct parody of - consult your local dance/hip hip expert.) The song is good enough that it will probably create some of those feelings itself in some people, enhancing the lulz. Plus, Lonely Island clearly enjoy music quite a bit too, so it's self-deprecation all 'round, the favorite brand of humor for nerds everywhere. Now it's been made into a WoW machinima! You are clearly the target market, sir or madam: get with the program, get down with your bad self, cut loose, darn the old people, full speed ahead, have some fun with a BOOMBOX!

I don't think this song is supposed to be serious, in that it has a message, at all...
But you know, about the New York verse, even if I didn't own the CD, is when I would be tipped off...
