Insider Trader: Your livelihood after patch 3.1
Insider Trader is your inside line on making, selling, buying and using player-made products.
Although patch 3.1 is still a few months from going live, it is already shaping up to be a positive force on the professions front. So far, we've been made aware of the following changes:
Engineers
Wrath introduced a new mechanic in the Engineering world: item modifications that act like enchants, but are based on zany inventions rather than dusty magic.
For better or worse, many of the enchants have been for fun, rather than as a viable choice for a raider. Engineers have been feeling left out, and that is all poised to change.
Patch 3.1 will add to your repertoire of enhancements. "Reticulated Armor Webbing" can be made to encase your tanking gloves, boosting your armor by 800. This will require 400 Engineering to use.
"Springy Arcanoweave" can be attached to a cloak, offering +11 spell power as well as a built-in parachute. While the spell power is minor, this is the only cloak modification that adds spell power to this slot. Besides, if you use the stat, then it is a great replacement for your Flexweave Underlay.
For the mid-level Engineers, or those who simply love Elder's Moonstones, you're about to learn how to make a new trinket. In fact, currently this item is a bind on equip trinket that does not require Engineering to use, so resale is a possibility.
The High-Powered Flashlight adds a chunk of hit rating as well as a permanent Moonstone-projection ability, which can come in handy in dungeons and raids, as well as providing entertainment.
Alchemy
So far, there has not been much alchemical news. Hopefully this means that something great is in the works.
We do have word of a new elixir, Elixir of Minor Accuracy, which adds 10 hit rating and can be used as low as level 15. This will probably be a big hit in the twink community, as well as a boost for tanks leveling up.
Blackmouth Oil and Fire Oil will no longer require vials, which is good, considering that Fire Oil is used in the making of the above elixir. If all goes well, there might be a renewed market for alchemical fish!
The Mercurial Stone, which was changed in patch 3.0.8 into a green-quality BoE trinket from the tool that it used to be, has cropped up in the patch notes as a documented change.
The Flask of Stoneblood will reportedly add additional health, which should brighten any tank's day.
Glyphs and Inscription
The number of new glyphs and changes to existing glyphs in this patch is staggering, and far too expansive for me to list and analyze here. Fortunately, most of the work has already been done for me!
There are several new bind on equip epic items that you'll be able to craft, including a spell dagger, the Titansteel Spell Blade.
Holy Paladins might find themselves interested in the Plate Girdle of Righteousness and the Treads of Destiny.
As for DPS plate, the Battle Lord's Plate Boots and the Belt of the Titans might be up your alley. Tanks will be able to craft, or purchase, the Indestructible Plate Girdle and the Spiked Deathdealers. Those boots are so fancy, they even have faces.
Some older recipes are also being reworked. Many of the recipes from 1-300 skill will have updated stats that are more useful, and Titanium Plating will reduce the duration of disarm effects by 50% in addition to increasing block value.
Enchants
Fancy yourself a staff? So many casters are holding one-handers and off-hands these days that Blizz is adding in some enticing new spell power enchants for staves. Enchant Staff - Greater Spellpower is the most expensive, but you can pick up Enchant Staff- Spellpower for much cheaper.
A low level boot enchant, Lesser Accuracy, is also being added, which will be another source of +hit for lower levels. Several recipes in the 250-300 skill range are being updated to be more useful.
Jewelcrafting
If you ever spent much time in Black Rock or other 60s-level dungeons, you've probably learned to ignore Black Diamonds. Sure, there are a few uses for them, and they had their own hey-day, but attempts to sell them these days are usually futile. Many players don't even loot them from the corpses, they're worth so little. Even the vendors won't take them!
With patch 3.1, all of this will change. Jewelcrafters will learn a spell called Prismatic Black Diamond, which will allow them to turn one diamond into a red, yellow or blue gemstone, the quality of which is unclear, and the color of which is a mystery every time! Currently, there's no cooldown.
Because the Black Diamonds are a lower level commodity, it is possible that in the future we'll see something that will allow us to create Northrend gems, similar to the BC spell for Brilliant Glass.
In keeping with the trend of handing down +hit to lower levels seen in these patch notes, Jewelcrafters will be able to make a blue-quality, bind on equip necklace, the Amulet of Truesight, that adds +11 hit rating. This would be useable for the 29 twink bracket, as that's minimum level required to wear it.
Leatherworking
Just like the other gear-crafting professions, Leatherworking will be given new bind on equip epics to craft.
Completionists and achievement-junkies should note the change to Dig Rat Stew.

Although patch 3.1 is still a few months from going live, it is already shaping up to be a positive force on the professions front. So far, we've been made aware of the following changes:

- New juicy, expensive enchants.
- Finally, a productive use for Black Diamonds.
- A new Jewelcrafting trinket.
- Lots of new Leatherworking goodies.
- Several Tailoring items, including a 32-slot herbing bag.
- Many current recipes, including Old World and Outland ones, are being rebalanced and updated.

- Savior's Slippers.
- Spellslinger's Slippers, for all of the spell-wielding cowboys and cowgals.
- Lowbies in the 19 twink bracket may be interested in the blue, bind on equip cloak, Spidersilk Drape. This is another example of how Blizz is sending hit down to lower level classes.

the tailoring changes are looking nice. Finally I get something with my kalu'ak rep!
Death Knight Feb 28th 2009 1:23PM
*cry* I just destroyed all those black diamonds I had on my paladin they were taking up space in my bags had stacks of them....many stacks
Azzarrea Feb 28th 2009 2:38PM
I'm right there with you. Got rid of a stack of them a few months ago.
Justin Nolan Feb 28th 2009 1:26PM
Top of the article: "A new Jewelcrafting trinket."
No further mention of this in the article. Info?

Before anyone else is a jerk about it, I'll nicely point out that Blizz did add the ability for JCers to make Northrend gems. The item is the Icy Prism. Seems awfully expensive...
Also, I didn't see a new JC trinket on this post. Maybe it was forgotten, or maybe you meant "amulet".
ShadowMagus Feb 28th 2009 1:41PM
The cost associated with making an Icy Prism far outweighs its value. If they didn't require Frozen Orbs, which are a much better and more reliable sell on the AH, I might actually make them, but as it is now, they lose money. It's much more profitable, for me, to get ore and prospect it than to make Icy Prisms.
Perhaps when I've gotten everything from the Emblem of Heroism vendor I could possibly want and have a few Emblems just sitting around, I'll waste them on orbs and make Prisms. But probably not. I'll probably just auction the orbs, it's more profitable.

I really couldn't agree more, Moose.
As the other Engie/Tank, I really do enjoy activating that haste boost mid-instance (even though I can't... really see the difference - though my thunder clap always seems ready to go afterwards!); but the armour is too harsh to turn down.
Honestly, Blizz - have you run out of ideas? "Boost gloves by 800, and turn mobs pink!" or "Boost gloves by 800, and shoots out confetti when you down Mal'ganis in Heroic CoS" - simple stuff.
Tyrael Mar 2nd 2009 3:02AM
Hey ShadowMagus. Then i bet you didn't know that the Icy Prism can produce dragon eyes. That makes it very very very VERY cool and i use it whenever the cooldown is up
Plastic Rat Feb 28th 2009 1:37PM
Dunno... still can't see how those new Engineering recipes justify taking the skill. Bleh.. seriously? How about some new epic guns? Explosives that stun? Update some of the old world stuff like the net projector and the mind control cap.
Add abilities to mod engineering mounts to go faster or customize models.
How about just let tinkering stuff stack with other enchants? Will that seriously overpower stuff so badly? How exactly is a parachute cloak that stacks with another enchant going to break anything? Why should they compete for the same slot?
Add some more utility stuff, "The friend summoner" with an 8 hour cooldown so when we're the first person at the summoning stone, we can pull over another party member and then get started on summoning the rest of the group?
How about some Engineering only hand weapons? Chainsaws/Chainswords? (Looks over shoulder in case Games Workshop are watching)
Come on guys, I hope there's still more to come, this can't be it.
Jalaris.Ghostlands Mar 3rd 2009 6:53PM
All Tank/Engineer peeps in WoW will rejoice at the glove enchant, both of them... Engineering is about the last thing I would choose for a tank, just in front of LW and Tailoring.
Engineering is more for fun than usefulness. The goggles in BC were good, but not much else otherwise. A few unique BoP pieces would go a long way to improving the profession. But I could say that about all professions.
Bonkai Feb 28th 2009 1:57PM
3.1 is a few months away??? I thought when it was up on the PTR it would be a few weeks away.
MisterMoose Feb 28th 2009 2:18PM
I'm a tank engineer and I am not rejoicing, per se. I LIKE my pyro-rocket gloves. Current glove enchants from enchanters are alright, but nothing to really get worked up over. 800 armor is huge, so now I have to trade in my neat ability for 800 armor and no neat ability, because I can't justify keeping my pyro-rockets anymore.
I just wish the armor gloves did something neat and fun in addition to the 800 armor. Neat and fun is part of why I took engineering, after all.

Well. Let's consider this. There are alot of arms/fury warriors doing PvP right now, where engineering really...glimmers (can't say it truly shines). I think this enchant, and bear with me here, might illustrate a certain amount of foresight on Blizzard's front, in that a fair amount of said warriors, or paladins, or whatever dumb class they let tank these days, would likely use this modification on their tank set considering dual spec will coincide with this, the enchant's release.
hagu Mar 1st 2009 12:43PM
If you spent several thousand gold leveling engineering, then with these changes it still doesn't even justify keeping it.
The benchmark is for a profession provides you a net benefit of about +38sp like BS,JC,LW,Inscription, enchanting. Tailoring is less.
So +38 on a cape that prevented u from having the haste enchant would not provide a net benefit of +38. Perhaps something in the range of 50-60 would be about the same net benefit to replacing the current haste enchant.
I sure hope they make engineering competitive with the other professions.
Jason Mar 1st 2009 1:02PM
How about a new Dimensional Ripper or that Wormhole Generator we heard about but never saw. I wouldn't mind some new stun grenades. And there had better be a Jet-Ski/Mini-Sub aquatic mount in the next expansion that lets us breathe underwater, carry passengers and has a mini-bar.
tmbg47 Feb 28th 2009 2:09PM
You forgot to mention that the glyph market is going to crash when people aren't re-purchasing the same glyphs 3 or 4 times a week for their respecs. Of course it's a good thing; but I will miss the steady stream of cash from my scribe.
Deb Feb 28th 2009 4:03PM
It would be uber nice if they could install a mana loom in Dalaran :)
teh_wild_knight Feb 28th 2009 4:06PM
I just wish bliz would give other professions half the attention that they give to inscription. Everything else feels like it gets a few nods while there is a whole mess of new and updated glyphs. So far most professions feel kinda lackluster in Wrath, at least to me.
lakanookie Feb 28th 2009 5:20PM
since they made the dig rat stew easier for alliance to get-why not go all the way and make the savory deviate delight recipe drop rate a little better? I just spent 6 HOURS trying to get it to drop-not a one-went into wailing and farmed the harpies too-nadda, nuttin, zilch, zip-the drop rate is really the lowest in the game for an item-
Shionia Feb 28th 2009 5:21PM
Great stuff, but: Is there really no new anti-venom?
(Granted, the Argent Dawn rep recipe Powerful Anti-Venom and the Portion of Purification say that they remove poisons "to level 60" yet seem to work most of the time for level 80s, but still ... )
