Breakfast Topic: The noob old days

That was just one of my many, many noob moments back then. When we first started the game, our very first MMO, my wife and I had no concept of tanking or the archetypal roles and group compositions. We headed into Sunken Temple with our friends, a Warlock and a Mage, and we thought that since my wife played a Shaman who wore mail, she should take the hits. Of course, she was also our only healer. Also with no concept of threat, we took about five hours to finish that instance, wiping numerous times. I look back on those days with fondness.
We all had to start somewhere. Our GM and Main Tank, perhaps one of the finest Warriors and raid leaders I know, regaled us with a story of when he was assigned to tank one of Garr's adds in Molten Core. Thinking that all he had to do was slap on a shield, he was astounded by the strength of the enemy, who would nearly one-shot him with every blow. These days, he just makes everything look easy, taking to chain pulling adds even when people at half mana just to keep things interesting. Were you ever a noob? I admit it with a bit of pride, too, since I'm happy with how much I've accomplished so far. What were your most memorable noob moments?

How about a warrior using an ammo pouch up until about level 30 because I needed to pull faster!
Ohnoto Mar 1st 2009 8:28AM
Yep,
On my warrior I had an ammo pouch, but all the way to level 60. I thought I needed one just to be able to use a bow.

Haha, same here.
I also remember running through the Burning Steppes, Blackrock mountain and Searing Gorge at level 15, for at least a couple of hours. I had no idea where I was going. I also had no clue there was something called a 'heartstone'.
Then there was the time I tanked scholomance as the mt warrior.. in paladin gear.. I actually did great!
I could go on, but I'd be to embarrassed (^.^')

Hmm, at level 30-40, during the scarlet monastary days, I wnt through something similar happened to me, except it was not wearing
An ammo pouch as a hunter. During the SM days i managed to get ahold of all of the mail scarlet armor (intended for warriors) on my hunter. Of course, at this time i noticed "Hey, this gear has a whole bunch of strength stam and armor..." so, i got rid of my ammo pouch, put my gun in the bank, and went melee huntard for the next god knows how many levels (as beastmaster of course). For those levels my strike rotation was raptor strike raptor strike mongoose bite repeat 10 times, dead mob. It was definately a slow few levels :(

@Macgayver
Hearthstone was a big noob thing for me too. I think I kept mine in the bank until I was lvl 20 or so. I thought that it was a one-time use item. Can't even remember how many times I walked from BFD to auberdine. ><
Not that I'm significantly less of a noob now tho. I was on probably my 5th kara run when opera came up as romeo and juliet. They kept telling me to interrupt her heals, and it was only after 6 or so wipes that I was told about this neat little feature you could turn on that would tell you what spell they were casting. Yeah. Pretty embarrassing. Then they made me go get DBM and Omen while they were at it.

What we, as noobs, fail to do is to look at the resources that are close at hand:
* Guild members
* Online resources, such as: WoWWiki.com, WoWHead.com and web sites that specialize in your class.
All it takes is some time and a wee bit of effort.
sara Mar 1st 2009 8:17AM
While I entirely agree with you that once you've discovered these resources there's little excuse to not learn your class (well, perhaps there's something to be said for learning by doing), I think you forget what it was like when you first started the game. I was completely shocked the first time I searched for online resources, by how many there were!! I had no idea!! I had also almost made it to level 70. I was a huntard (for example, I left my pet's growl on in dungeons) but I simply had no idea so many people wrote about wow on the interwebz.

I agree with Sara. The topic wasn't "How can we help noobs?", it was asking us about our noob days. I certainly don't think my noob days were caused only by not knowing resources exist, it was my first mmo and I wanted to discover everything on my own. And y'don't have to list them for us; we obviously know of one because we're posting here O:

Back when I was a n00b things like thottbot and wowwiki were just starting up, old school player and what not. I'm not even sure if WoWHead was around back then.
Most noobish thing I can recall doing was clicking frustratedly on the mail icon on the side of the minimap to get my mail.
"You have unread mail"
"I'M TRYING TO READ IT YOU STUPID #$)*)*@#....oh look a mail box..."

SGM9000:
Looking at Wowhead's "About" page, they launched in summer 2006 but didn't become popular until... mm, right around when TBC launched is when I started hearing about them a lot, myself. It took awhile for them to overcome the massive popularity that was Thottbot. ;)

xD My first character was a forsaken rogue as well- only she didn't make it past level 6 because I used to get lost consantly in Tirisfall.
Catiya of Feathermoon Mar 1st 2009 8:09AM
Oops! And another. Having no concept of stats, my second character was a draenei hunter who wore a cape of frozen wrath and some stylish leather pants to level 40, because they matched :D! Untill someone called me a noob for it and I went to go learn about stats :(
Sweet Sweet SoulShards Mar 1st 2009 8:08AM
I remember when I rolled a forsaken rouge, and I was totaly sure that the more intellect i stacked the more quest items or clams or something would drop from the murlocs. :P Good times, good times...
Sweet Sweet SoulShards Mar 1st 2009 8:11AM
"forsaken rouge". See what I did there? I still have it in me! :D
Josh Mar 1st 2009 8:13AM
Ahhh Tirisfal brings back good old memories of my first character, a Warlock. I didn't realize until level 30 that my class' weapons (staves, daggers and swords) were only meant as stat-boosters. I remember buying "better" staffs from the AH because the damage was higher on them, and I would melee hit mobs with my staff or wand between the DOTs I cast.
I also had no concept of tank/healer/DPS roles back then, so I'd go in those low-level dungeons with just a couple friends, and we'd get so frustrated on wiping because we either had no tank or no healer with us.
But the game was fun back then, nonetheless. Fun in a different way, where everything was new and waiting to be discovered. I think we still need more of that, rather than just new raid content and an attitude towards farming and grinding.
Vinicius O. E. Mar 1st 2009 9:01AM
LOL, I used to do the same on my priest. I didn't care about int, spirit... All I wanted was dps. Sad days...
Leetsauce Mar 1st 2009 8:15AM
Umm I think the worst thing I did was not realize that you could scroll down on the talent window and there were more talents in each tree. Like I was about level 40-50 and had all my points in the first few tiers :(
Icefox Mar 1st 2009 9:18AM
Hell, I didn't realise there were other talent trees. I must have been into the 60's before someone asked me why I was trying to tank as arms. why wasn't I prot? I was thinking "what the hell's 'prot'?"
Terhen Mar 1st 2009 9:20AM
haha, i did this for a long time too
Doomers Mar 1st 2009 11:32AM
lol, don't feel bad I also had no idea of talent points even existing until mid 40's or 50's.
That was bad but the most noob moment was me (a warlock) spending a ridiculous amount of money (at the time) and hours trying to get The Phantom Blade....No concept of any stats whatsoever.
Thank God we all moved on...or at least most of us
