Gorilla Thunderstomp ability given to all tenacity pets
If you've been reading WoW Insider for a while, you probably remember Big Red Kitty's meditations on the Gorilladin. With judicious use of the Gorilla Hunter pet's Thunderstomp skill, you could grind multiple mobs at once and bring Hunter leveling and farming to a whole new level -- enough that Blizzard's had Gorillas under the microscope for a while. Now the word has come down: No more monkey business in 3.1. Gorillas are losing Thunderstomp as a unique pet family ability. That doesn't mean, however, that Thunderstomp is going away. Rather, it means that all tenacity pets are getting it.
As Mania reports, the new Thunderstomp, in the 3rd tier of the tenacity pet tree, does a bit less damage than the highest rank of the current Thunderstomp, but it does still have the attached threat. It should at the least make it much easier for any tenacity pet to tank multiples, and officially lay to rest the title of Gorilladin.
Of course, Gorillas probably won't disappear into the mist either, as their replacement skill is Pummel, a copy of the Warrior skill that interrupts spell casting. Thus in one fell swoop, Gorillas may have just become the preferred Arena pet.
As far as how this will all synergize with current family skills on other pets, I expect Crocolisks and Bears especially to jump to the forefront of tenacity pet popularity. Their multi-target attack abilities will combine with Thunderstomp to create some nice AE threat and DPS, perfect for farming or pet tanking at any level. I don't think the Acid Spit armor reduction of the worm should be taken lightly either, and some Hunters may like the extra defensive power of the Turtle.
But this, combined with Blizzards other moves of equalizing pet stats and adding other new talents and skills to each tree, should make choosing a pet for looks rather than skills a lot less painful for your overall DPS or utility. When the really good stuff is located in the talents, you can finally grab that Crab without regret. This could all change before 3.1 goes live, but here's hoping Blizzard decides to keep these changes. More customization is always more fun.

Sweet. Excellent change. I didnt want to choose gorilla for a "Tank Pet" but I felt I had to. Now I'll be able to choose one of the "Less stinky" animals instead :D

This sucks, makes no sense to have woms etc stomp. Will probalby get rid of my gorilladin in favor of a Bearadin.
Hoggersbud Mar 1st 2009 5:32PM
Makes sense to me, just thumps its body on the ground, rather than its feet.
nevwyn Mar 1st 2009 4:21PM
This is fantastic, I'll get to use my warpstalker again for something other then following me around town.
hah Mar 1st 2009 4:26PM
Well, advantage for those on the opposite class for hunter:P
But dis-adv..for hunters, well depends on if they will rather use this gorilla as a tank:P?
Cyanea Mar 1st 2009 4:52PM
Sweet!
I wanted to AoE grind, but couldn't stand to use a gorilla.
SunwellVialist Mar 1st 2009 4:52PM
Hooray! I can get rid of the ape and instead use my worm for this now. I always liked that pet better anyways. Maybe gonna try a bear some time...
Usdom Mar 1st 2009 5:02PM
Great, just what the game needs another interrupt spell... No KY for the mages this patch either.
Naix Mar 2nd 2009 2:34PM

Pick one...
1. Buff damage
2. Now Be able to be interrupted
You can't have both.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Why all these lame changes in 3.1?
mortis2600 Mar 1st 2009 5:22PM
It's not being fixed. It's being expanded to include other combination of pets.
Personally, I'm really looking forward to having Thunderstomp AND swipe on a single pet. That sounds like an amazing combo.
Deadly. Off. Topic. Mar 2nd 2009 12:58PM
Would you rather they nerf it instead of sharing the wealth? It could have gone that way instead ya know.

Congrats Hunters, nice change...although am I the only one thinking that a Hunter pet can now AE tank better than Feral Druid? Particularly Bears and Crocs - they might not be able to take as many hits as a Feral, but Thunderstomp generates threat through 360 degrees, meaning it's easy to run into a pack and use it, instead of targetting the mob at the front, waiting for the rest of the pack to run to you and hoping there are no casters.
Also, snap aggro is better with Thunderstomp than Swipe. If anyone's ever played an AoE class with a Feral tanking whelps and blzes on Sarth+3, they'll know what I'm talking about - I don't expect too many will have done that, as the 3 plate classes have much better AE aggro than Ferals, and we're generally better suited to Drakes and Sarth himself, but...you know, just in case.

I don't suppose there's any chance Dragonhawks (the unsung hero of pet tanking prior to 3.0) could get back their AoE breath now? I miss my Ribbon taking on everything at once.
raful Mar 1st 2009 5:25PM
How does it work for rhinos? I mean they've already got an aoe...

Samael Mar 1st 2009 5:33PM
Sorry for the double post but @ 15 they're changing Rhino Stampede to only affect 1 target, if you go to mania you can see a full list of changes
Samael Mar 1st 2009 5:32PM
Well since it's one rank can anyone say how it scales now? Seems that the one rank is equal to rank 4.5-5 of the gorilla skill doing 162-163 damage. All it means is people will switch gorillas for bears and crocks to make up for the lost TS damage
