An Immortal in Ulduar and other troublesome achievements
Here's an interesting Ulduar request from Hugner on Hyjal -- he wants to ask that there be no "Immortal"-style achievement in the new raid instance. He says getting the achievement has been super frustrating for his guild, not only because, you know, it's hard, but because with one simple disconnect at the wrong time, the whole week's attempt is wasted.Of course, an achievement like that isn't meant to be easy. Some people in the thread suggest making it more like The Dedicated Few (so that not all the bosses have to be flawless in one run), but Bornakk says it's an achievement -- it's not required and if you really want to get the meaningless points, you'll just have to work around the disconnects. He's also shoring up discontent on the other side of things -- people are complaining that the Gonna Go When the Volcano Blows achievement is messing up their Sarth runs, because they're dodging insignificant damage rather than actually downing the boss. In fact, the easiest way to do that one is just to suicide in the very beginning (because the AoE can't hit corpses), and lots of people are doing that. Bornakk says change isn't likely -- the achievement is designed to be separate from gaining loot from the boss.
Bottom line on both of these is that they're achievements -- if they're hard or random or waste time, that's kind of the point. Blizzard may have caved on a few of the holiday achievements, but these endgame achievements aren't meant to be gotten easily or even without a little RNG help.

I've run many heroics, and run as many raids as possible, and you completely missed my point. Unless you think its possible to solo raid content. Obviously you need to play with other people and as i said, they would still need to be accomplished enough to get you through the entire raid without wiping once(since a wipe would result in your own death as well). But as far as requiring 25 people to all not die(or even so much as disconnect, or lag at a very bad time) to add an achievement to your personal collection seems a bit rough IMO. At the end of the day i dont really care one way or the other because i dont plan on getting or even trying to get these achievements. I'm not asking blizzard to change anything i haven't(and won't) post this on the wow forums where it will be considered QQ. All i'm doing is stating my opinion in a comment, nothing more. Just because you dont agree with me doesnt mean you have to make radical assumptions about what I do, and do not do in the game.

Our guild ignores achievements when it comes to our raids. They distract from the task at hand. Personally, I think the entire achievement system is a massive waste of time, particularly the achievements which rely exclusively on the RNG.

When your guild has naxx/os25 on farm and is working on a 6 minute malygos, I'm pretty sure you want another challenge before "the next big patch" comes in with new raids.
Sorry to say, but just because your guild progresses slow doesn't mean that everyone else does. Go ahead and take your time from Anub'rhekan to Maexxna. Others prefer chain pulling and would like to be recognized for successfully completing such run.
/who woulda thunk people had so many CHOICES in a GAME

As an achievement junkie (6490, not amazing but generally high) I think the biggest issue that's arising from these is the new time limit applied to getting a black/plagued proto-drake.
Until now there has been no sense of urgency applied to the raids, because you could always go back and attempt it next week. DC's are common'ish on my server, simply because we all raid with anywhere up to 600ms latency, but that's a fact of life for Oceanics. Those who's systems are a bit sketchy, we force them to sit out of the room/range if needs be. EG. Safety dance we have one guy who's system just doesn't allow him to guarantee being able to do it, so he sits out of the room. On Thaddius the same thing can be applied to people, can sit off to the edge and just throw frostbolts, or throwing knives, or arrows or whatever.
I'm hoping to be able to go and finish off my 10 man raider achievements (though 6 min malygos and sarth 3d will be a great challenge to do), but I doubt I'll get immortal or heroic shocking in time.

This is my problem right here. The "exclusivity" of these mounts goes beyond being able to keep 25 people alive in a run that goes on for hours. Now you have to accomplish this before the next big content patch.
Its not like you're running back to Zul'Gurub for an immortal run. Its not a 20 level difference, with gear to match. Its the next tier of raiding in the SAME LEVEL.
If Blizzard thinks picking up 6-8 epics from the first few bosses in Ulduar during the first week will greatly jeopardize the challenge of these achievements, maybe they should:
A) tone down the gear. If this one epic is gonna save this person for 4+ hours (which was somehow not possible before this patch) then the piece is obviously overpowered.
B) make the achievement a real challenge, and not have it be so dependent on gear.
"I used to die to Heigan's safety dance. But with my new helm from Ulduar, I can now stay alive easily and have acquired the Immortal title!"
Hint: Gear doesn't save you from Frogger or Heigan's flames
