Wrath of the Lich King falls off the top sales spot (for now)

We suppose it had to happen at some point -- with PTR interest kicking in this past week, and the game having sold so many copies already, there had to be a point where something else jumped up above Wrath. But don't count the award winning expansion out of the number one spot yet. While Dawn of War II is getting reviewed very favorably, this little bump is likely due to an audience of fans who wanted to get the sequel on day one. Once first-week sales for that game level off, it's entirely likely that we'll see WotLK back up on top. Not that Blizzard needs any more money, of course. But it is good to be the (Lich) King.

Misspelling the God Emperor's name is heresy. The Inquisition will shortly arrive to take you for interrogation. Have a nice day.

Why does it matter if WOTLK isn't number one on the sales list? They've sold more than enough copies and they are making plenty of money off of it.
It's just a game after all...

I think its pretty clear in all forms news doesn't always have to "matter" as long as it is entertaining. And a lot of people find stuff like this entertaining.
Deadlock Mar 4th 2009 4:26PM
Was bound to happen. Relic make much better games than Blizzard, even if they're not always as popular.

Is it so hard to believe that at some point the sales of WotLK would fall off? Even with new subscribers there will come a point that everyone currently playing has a copy (or 25 for those enterprising dual-boxers out there) and the sales will slip.
It's not like being displaced by another Game of the Year franchise is such a horrible thing. Now if it'd been displaced by say Pokemon Blue Carbuncle edition that might be another story.

Meh, I'd rather play WotLK myself but that's mostly because I'm not into many RTS games. Only ones I could really play was Command & Conquer (the originals I absolutely love) and Warcraft 3 (it's storyline owns lol).
But we all knew WotLK would be kicked off it's throne eventually, if not by Warhammer 40K then by something else. Hell, I honestly believe that when Starcraft II and Diablo III are released, they'll top WotLK. I won't be surprised if they top Dawn of War II as well.

I blame myself. I bought a copy. It's all my fault. Sorry Bliz...

It's all in the cycle... up and down and up and down.

Ahhh - but remember - "WoW does not die; it does not live. It is outside the cycle."

Naturally sales will be lower because WotLK has been out for a few months now and all its fans have grabbed a copy for themselves. DUH!
Whereas this Warhammer thing is new. (I think)
It's not the end of the world.

1. The first edition of Warhammer 40k (rogue trader) came out in 1986, years before the first warhammer game.
2. Warhammer 40K is a different genre. It's science fiction. WoW is Fantasy.
3. Dawn of war is a Real-Time-Strategy game. WoW is an MMORPG. Warhammer Fantasy is the Warhammer MMORPG.
In my opinion, I like Warhammer 40K more, but I'm still devoted to WoW. Now, if Games WorkShop came out with a decent Warhammer 40K MMORPG, I'd leave WoW in a heartbeat. Until then, I'll just play DOW and WoW :D
FOR THE EMPEROR!

Microtonal Mar 4th 2009 6:12PM
Well, after hopping over to their website and watching a few videos, I'm certainly going to run out and grab a copy of Dawn of War ASAP. I'm an old-school W4K fan from way back, and I've always wondered why it isn't more popular than it is. It's one of the best game settings there is, if not THE best.
