WoW Rookie: Bank on it
New around here? WoW Rookie points WoW's newest players to the resources they need to get acclimated. Send us a note to suggest a WoW Rookie topic.Got stuff? You need a banker. Creating a dedicated character to do nothing but hang out in town, store goods and handle your finances may sound redundant at first. But time is money, friend -- and a banker can save you both.
The benefits:
Eliminate travel time. No more hearthing back to the city at the end of every session, and no more trudging back to your current base of operations when you're ready for some action. Trust us – when you hit the Outlands and have to travel from Shattrath City all the way back to the Old World to use an Auction House, you'll be glad to skip that whole process.
Put the entire Auction House at your fingertips. Anything item you need is instantly at your disposal when your banker is at the ready. Log in the banker, buy what you need, mail it to whichever character needs it. (Remember, mail between characters on the same account is now instant.) It's that quick and easy.
Spread out over increased storage space. As you level, the sheer amount of stuff you own expands exponentially. Equip your banker with spacious bags in as many bank slots as needed and unload everything that's not soulbound. Remember, you can always mail it back instantly!
Centralize trade materials. Your crafting characters can share common materials – enchanting components, leather, primals, ore, cloth, extra spices for cooking -- when you centralize storage on a banker.
Take advantage of mailbox "storage." Is the new zone you're fighting in chewing through your health or mana pots? Mail a bunch to your banker, and have the banker return the mail. The shipment will land back in your mailbox, safe for nearly one month. Now you can access your health pots wherever there's a mailbox.
Cut down on add-on memory. No need to load up Auctioneer on every character. Only your banker needs it.
Sound like a plan? Here are a few more points to mull over in your quest for financial freedom.
Play the Auction House. A banker is perfectly positioned to become a market force by buying and selling in the Auction House. Beyond the basics, what most players want is solid advice on what's worth selling on the AH, how much to charge and how to get the best buys. Check out our Insider Trader advice on playing the market.
Streamline with add-ons. Most bankers will want an Auction House tool such as Auctioneer; it can be complicated to set up and learn to use, but it's an invaluable tool in helping you target the best prices for buying and selling. If storage is your focus, you'll want an inventory mod that can tell you what items and materials you have on each and every one of your characters.
Consider a guild bank. If you're really a craftsaholic altaholic, you might even consider setting up your own guild and buying a guild bank tab. Don't laugh; we know players who've done it.
Treat with the enemy. If your server has a healthy cross-faction economy, you might consider positioning a banker at a neutral Auction House to take advantage of items that are hard to come by on one faction or the other.
Learn disenchanting. It's handy to be able to disenchant items with your banker, but you'll have to level and skill up to be able to handle the highest-level items.
Find home, sweet home. My banker loves Thunder Bluff because the Auction House, a convenient vendor, the mailbox and the bank are in a row quite close together. It's almost like strafing a production line. Experiment with different cities and find the one that keeps your running time to minimum and makes you feel at home.
Look the part. You're what? You're still wearing your underwear? Tsk, tsk. The expert who handles your family's finances deserves better than that. Outfit yourself in garb befitting your station.

Actually, I have 2 banker guilds, one with two and one with three guild bank slots. The first is for my herb storage, pretty empty after skilling Inscr, then picking up Alchemy again. The second is mostly for storing stuff which wouldn't sell anyway but that I'm hesitating to vendor/throw away, mostly because there _could_ be some use for it, esp. lowlevel meat, or random stuff that could be used in recipe X from tradeskill Y that I'm skilling on alt Z. Or just hand it out to friends in case they need it.

I had a Banker at one time, but like an above poster I leveled him, He is still my Banker (Since I went to AA and decided to level one alt at a time to level cap) So I still have him as a banker. He is in his own little guild I started and my friend joined it also with his banker and we have 4 Guild bank tabs bought already, 1 For Crafting mats, 1 for Disenchanting and we each have a tab. Since he is a pack rat I gave him my slot and started another Alt (That I am leveling) and bought another bank tab for extra stuff. Altaholic is a great add on. There is nothing wrong with starting a guild and buying a bank tab or two. If you don't have a toon that is level capped, get a friend to join and save what you can to each get a tab. (We split the cost down the board for each tab)

How can you like South Park and dislike the "Frist Psot" phenomenon? I thought those were the same people...

It's preferential.
Hearthing to Shattrath and jumping through a portal take about ninety seconds. Stormwind is always bustling; and comforting, inasmuch as it's suspended in early summer. I want time, if just a few minutes, to wind down.
As for Level 1 go-go dancers, I've never seen the need. Clutter motivates selling. And profit has never eluded me, so neither mains nor alts are for want of cash.

I have a guild for all of my alts with a few bank tabs. I got someone to invite all my alts to the guild... this makes it SUPER easy to access all of the items at once from any alt without having to constantly switch between them to find the item I want.

You forgot the cons :)
It's tedious to have to relog to get to some of your mats instead of running to the bank.
It takes a character slot.
If you play the AH, your gold is rarely on hand when you aren't on your auction alt.
There are probably others, but those are the reasons I stopped using a bank alt.

I basically store everything up using the mail system and banks, then force myself to ocassionally go through the mess and throw everything on the AH at once, to the tune of a few thousand gold in one large clump.
I don't find "playing the market" fun, nor do I care to hang out in town to make cash. I've never cared to create my own bank guild when the mailbox offers such convenient and unlimited storage in two month blocks.

What I like most about bank alts is the ones who pay 100 gold for Noble's Monocles.
That's always pleasant.

South park is an intelligent satire, and most people who would scoff at that fact have either never watched it or have only seen it once or twice.
People who post "first" make the world a little bit sadder.
I've read on this site before that you can load specific addons on specific characters, but I've never been able to figure this out, do you just uncheck the box at the login screen for certain characters, or is it a configuration with each individual addon?
lonerenegade Apr 5th 2009 10:34PM
to turn on/off addons for specific characters, goto the top left corner of your addon panel at the character screen, and it will ALL or ...its a drop down menu which will list all your characters names.
enjoy =)

My husband and I have an alt bank guild. We each have 2 bank toons, and 4 guild tabs, but will soon need a 5th. It is really profitable, and as we have each profession covered and maxed out between our toons, it is ideal for storing/sharing mats. We keep ourselves fully stocked for raiding needs, and are in the process of storing up items to be sold on the AH when Ulduar becomes available;)

"Consider a guild bank. If you're really a craftsaholic altaholic, you might even consider setting up your own guild and buying a guild bank tab. Don't laugh; we know players who've done it."
Have one with 4 tabs.
That's a lot of space shared between the wife and I. I bought the tabs with money made from playing the auction house. That same bank toon had the resources available to store up a ton of mats and I made a good 1-2K the day LK came out in low level herbs that had been sitting in the bank in case I wanted to level herbalism again. Scribe DKs paid in blood that week.
I've now gotten the first 2K we need for dual spec for our characters. Again, having that space has proven quite a boon as I have stored mats bought when the market's week and then sold them for a tidy profit when it bounces back.
The biggest reason to have a bank alt if you play the AH is simple though. You remain anonymous. Do not underestimate the value of people not knowing you are the bastard that cornered the market they were making money off of...

Doesn't Blizzard not keep records on characters under level 10? So, if you get hacked and your bank alt had all your money, how would they even verify you'd ever had money?!
D:
Greenman Mar 5th 2009 8:09AM
So don't get hacked. Stop buying gold. Use an antivirus program. Use Firefox and NEVER IE. Don't visit sites and click links that are any kind of suspicious.
My account is over 4 years old at this point and still running on the original password. It's not that hard.
eenersumbrella Mar 5th 2009 1:22AM
I sooo have my own guild for my bank alt and lowbie alts that I haven't raised yet. So far I've bought 2 bank tabs, and I'm considering a 3rd because I have all the professions covered, just not the space for the crafting materials O.O
eenersumbrella Mar 5th 2009 1:26AM
I'm pretty sure that is policy that they don't keep records on anything below level 10.
However, a lot of people's bank alts that I know of are 10+ because they were a failed alt when they first started playing.
Also, 1 word for account safety = Authenticator.
Nauscicaa Mar 5th 2009 5:25AM
It's funny how in WoW the description of these types of alts,
who in most old skool mmorpgs were very adequately called 'Mule', changed to a suit wearing economy wrecking 'Banker'
Understandable though as 99% of wow players probably never even heard of a genre called mmorpg before they started playing this great game
Throck Mar 5th 2009 12:46PM
"Mule" is a general non-gaming term meaning "smuggler" or "courier". "Banker" seems to be a better term for WoW alts whose primary use is for asset storage and liquidation. I doubt there is any connection between ignorance about MMORPGs and a preference for "banker" over "mule".
As for my own setup, I have two main bankers. One stores and auctions full stacks, and the other stores and auctions partial stacks. And all my characters act as mules for each other, depending on the need. :-P
Geoff Mar 5th 2009 6:54AM
My main is a mage, so I have no issue with a quick portal to Orgrimmar and back. As a result it is sort of my bank character too.
Mosshoof Mar 5th 2009 7:54AM
My level 1 bank guy (now level 2 thanks to exploring xp) got the stylish Festive Black Pants Suit from the Lunar Festival, now he is one of the classiest bank toons in Org :)
