Breakfast Topic: Who's the boss?
Recently we brought back one of our popular features -- the boss matchup that pits the game's nastiest bosses against each other. It's really an interesting thought, and even though we can theorycraft all we want about how things come down, it's really just a popularity contest. I mean, if you think about it, one reader was right about Amanitar beating Eck the Ferocious, right? But our little frog-like friend was the more popular one, so he won the day. That's how we roll. That brings me to my question today... who's your favorite boss of all time? The bosses in Ulduar look really interesting, but it's too early to tell which one is going to be really cool and which one is going to be really annoying. Let's see... I think everybody loves VC, right? He's just so darned charming. Personally, I always enjoyed the Four Horsemen in Naxxramas... if only because they're pretty cool. I mean four Death Knights, all of different dispositions, on cool horses... I kind of like Sir Zeliek but probably only because I play a Paladin. I imagine he was forced to reroll and didn't like what he got.
So... four years and two expansions later, with numerous instances and raids... who's the boss you enjoy the most? Who's the boss you remember best? Surely someone's got to pick the flatulent Princess? Or maybe the king you pay tribute to in the Maul? They've given us all some fun (and painful) times, let's give a shoutout to our favorite ones.

Herald Volazj in the Old Kingdom...I love the concept of fighting evil clones of everyone in the party. A very neat idea.

Oh geez, herald Volazj....interesting concept, but I don't think any fight that gets easier as group members die is worth consideration. Seriously, A group of mine 4-manned him and lost another DPS during the encounter, and it was the easiest time ever. Without all that extra damage taken during Insanity, it's a cakewalk.

I completely agree, Herald Volazj. I just love the concept and mechanic there. It's pretty much the only time guildies say, "JEEZE, she was a PAIN to get down, kept healing herself!" hahaha

Who's the boss? I'M THE BOSS!!!!
But really, gotta love that big...squid thing at the end of Old Kingdom. General...I can't remember his name!

Kael'Thas in MgT. Felt like the first 'proper' instance I'd done, love all the different elements to the fight, and flying through the air is just plain fun. Also had to farm his ass for the phoenix pet, which is my favourite pet too :D Even through Lich, it's always been my favourite instance and favourite boss fight

Shattered Halls. The best!
I really liked Grand Warlock Nethekurse. As you kill the peons, Next! Didn't need him anyway! Thick Skulled! He made me chuckle
Or the two headed Ogre in there, Warbringer O'mrogg. The two head arguing.
"If you nice me let you live" "No, we will NOT let you live!"
"Me hungry!" "You always hungry. That why we so fat!"

Eck the Ferocious. Don't know why, just think he's hilariously awesome.
Icefox Mar 6th 2009 8:21AM
Shade of Aran, hands down.
"Torment me no more!"
Neirin Mar 6th 2009 6:30PM
Shade of Aran was always fun and I have some good memories of him. He still has almost all of my favorite in-game quotes. "Burn, you hellish fiends!" and "I want this nightmare to be over" were some I particularly liked.
Of course, for shear fun my favorite boss is still Nexus-Prince Shaffar from Mana Tombs. One time I was running it with a few friends and when he said "I have such... Interesting things to show you" someone on vent said "wow, he sounds like a molester or a pedophile or something" and now I can't fight him without laughing at the memory.

Reliquary of Souls.
Awesome voices, interesting fight, just a little lore around it D:

Would have to be 4-horsemen. I would rather have done it back in Vanilla Naxx, where rotating around more than 3 times is actually neccessary.
Though I do love the amount of concentration it requires. As a DPS, I just have to watch my DoT timers (less in 3.1), and make sure I don't stand in anything painful. While tanking 4-horsemen, I have to keep up my leeching-dots (Siphon Life, Haunt, Drain Life), watch the stacks of marks and avoid Blaumeux's Void Zones. That might seem easy for your average tank, but most DPS aren't use to it.
Though as a close second, it'd have to be Blackheart the Inciter. For obvious reasons.
"Time for FUN!"

Van Cleef.
I would slaughter a hundred bulls in Blizzard's honor if they would make an Heroic Dead Mines.
MusedMoose Mar 7th 2009 11:29AM
Wholly agreed. Deadmines was the first instance I ever did, and taking down Van Cleef with a PUG was the first time I ever felt like I'd done something truly epic.
Maéryn Mar 6th 2009 8:25AM
Hmm tough one, but it's gotta be between HeraldVolazj (Elephant Cthulhu!) and Malygos, both such interesting fights...even if they are a little messy
ROFLAMO Mar 6th 2009 8:23AM
Shade of Aran:
I am Nelis Aran. Torment me no more!
other than that I really like llidan Stormrage the fight pre nerf is JUST SOO interesting and you feel very deeply involved.
Matt Mar 6th 2009 8:24AM
Vael in BWL, no contest at all!
If you skipped over BWL on your way into Outland, form a mini-raid and go in there, he's only the second boss and you won't be sorry.
Como Mar 6th 2009 8:26AM
Lotheb, not particularly fun unless your dps, but a fun fight if you are even if it is completely gimmped in the Wotlk era. yea 100% crit lol.
Theangrypaladin Mar 6th 2009 8:27AM
Definitely Warbringer Om'rogg from Shattered Halls. I use his dying words all the time"
"This all your fault!" "I.... hate... you...."
Personally, I like idiot check fights (Heigan, Loken, etc). Makes you really think about the people in your guild...
Wyred Mar 6th 2009 8:27AM
Tough one. I really liked both Naj'entus and Kael'thas, because as a healer they both felt like real achievements. But overall I'd say my favourite was Al'ar. Not really sure why, but always had a lot of affection for that fight. Sapphiron would be my favourite out of the WotLK content.
Willow Mar 6th 2009 10:57AM
Alar was one of the first guild progression kills I was involved in, and I just loved the encounter. We're not a hardcore guild by any stretch, so it took us numerous wipes (and a couple of weeks) to take the bird down.
As a mage, perfecting my mana management on that fight was key to Phase 1, and then DPS'ing down adds in Phase 2 w/o blowing up any melee was a lot of fun. All while dodging meteors.
