Breakfast Topic: Who's the boss?
Recently we brought back one of our popular features -- the boss matchup that pits the game's nastiest bosses against each other. It's really an interesting thought, and even though we can theorycraft all we want about how things come down, it's really just a popularity contest. I mean, if you think about it, one reader was right about Amanitar beating Eck the Ferocious, right? But our little frog-like friend was the more popular one, so he won the day. That's how we roll. That brings me to my question today... who's your favorite boss of all time? The bosses in Ulduar look really interesting, but it's too early to tell which one is going to be really cool and which one is going to be really annoying. Let's see... I think everybody loves VC, right? He's just so darned charming. Personally, I always enjoyed the Four Horsemen in Naxxramas... if only because they're pretty cool. I mean four Death Knights, all of different dispositions, on cool horses... I kind of like Sir Zeliek but probably only because I play a Paladin. I imagine he was forced to reroll and didn't like what he got.
So... four years and two expansions later, with numerous instances and raids... who's the boss you enjoy the most? Who's the boss you remember best? Surely someone's got to pick the flatulent Princess? Or maybe the king you pay tribute to in the Maul? They've given us all some fun (and painful) times, let's give a shoutout to our favorite ones.

He not really a boss but Cookie from Deadmines. Why? WHY NOT!
THOUGH I would love to see a match up between Cookie and Tito from Karazhan's Opera Event.
It would be epic.. Teeth vs Rolling Pin! XD

My guild is fairly casual, and a lot of the members use our friendly environment to help recruit their RL friends to play WoW. A lot of our recruits are new to the game, and it's up to us more experienced guild members to log onto our low level alts and teach them how to run an instance, with the Deadmines as our chalkboard. And every time, I can't help but tell the newby..
"My bags are full, why don't you go loot that treasure chest?"
Mr. Smite FTW.
Besides, the guy can stun me even at 80. Props to him for that.

As a fire mage in BC I loved the OZ fight because it was the rare chance to solo something in a boss fight - I always felt better if I could kill the Straw Man before the rest of the group was done with the other bosses.
Eredar twins were fun - the game has so few femme fatales.
Of the current content I enjoy the Four Horsemen fight the most. Keeps everyone moving and the boss voice overs are some of the best in the game.

Fav boss in wotlk - Malygos.
I mean...I get to ride a hover disk! What's not to like? Plus my guild had never downed him until I joined. I like to think it was my uber leet dps that helped us beat the enrage :P
pre wotlk - Shade of Aran -
"I am not some simple jester! I am Nielas Aran!"

Why are the links to Van Cleef and Zeliek complicated redirects via google? Seems passing odd.

I think my favorite encounter so far would be Sartharion. It's quick to run, you get 4 badges, it's not hard to be geared for it and the fight itself is pretty easy.
The fight is fun, you get to run around, there's adds, there's a simple idiot check, the boss yells at you a lot, and you can scale the difficulty if you think it's too easy, adding to the replay value. ...and you get to kill a dragon! 4 of 'em! sometimes even at the same time!
Unfortunately the groups I've done it with lately (since my guild doesn't run it anymore) seem to always be intent on surfing all the big waves. Totally radical dude! :/
I've only ever healed it though, so I'm not sure how much fun it is to Tank or DPS it.

Whoa. Whoa. WHOA.
Did I just get a shout out? Awesome.
I think my favorite Boss Battle in the game so far is Tempest Keep's Kael'Thas. It had a great build up with all of Kael's dialog and cut scenes as well as interesting mechanics that made raids think. Mind you, I didn't start Raiding Kael until after the first wave of nerfs that cut him from a thirty minute fight to like a fifteen minute fight, but I still think it's one of the most epic battles in the game.
In Wrath, of all the new bosses Voljaz is my favorite. He's got a really cool use of Phasing. I hope we see more of it, I love beating my raid mates silly!

Blackheart the Inciter. I hate clearing his room, but he's the funniest boss ever.
Darkmercy Mar 6th 2009 12:27PM
This is a great post.
All time I'm going to have to go with the Priestess arena fight from MGT. Nothing beats watching hardcore pve people freak out at the tank for not holding aggro and for the fight not going exactly according to plan. I can't tell you how many times I beat that fight as the last person standing on my lock, also, she dropped my trinket the second time in there :).
Terron Gorefiend gets honorable mention for the only fight where I've begged the Gods and all within earshot for him to kill me first and save us the pain of watching one of our "I've never done anything but spam heal" people try to kite.
Single most memorable boss moment though is one-shotting nef with my guild pre-BC, we were all so freaking surprised, "how'd that happen? oh wait, we rule"

I love The Opera boss encounter in Kara... but only if it's The Wizard of Oz. I"ve been an Oz nut since I was 2, so the first time we got them I was so excited I could barely concentrate on healing. Wore a big stupid grin for about half an hour after that.

C'thun.
Whispering in your hear the Whole Time you are clearing the dungeon up to him. It's one of the coolest parts of the game for me, still.
Having his opening attack be capable of nuking an entire 40-man raid ain't nothing to scoff at either.

I am not some simple jester! I am Nielas Aran!
Merel Mar 6th 2009 1:07PM
Thaddius :D For whatever reason, I just love that fight. The whole mechanic is quite fun.
odawr Mar 6th 2009 1:08PM
it's gotta be Bloodlord Mandokir from vannila WoW, especally if Jin'do the Hexer is still alive, actually he's my second favourte boss as i like the mechanics involved but i digress.
Once bloodlord Mandokir kills you he gains experiance and after a couple of kills he will level up, shout "Ding" and Jin'do will shout back "Gratz Mon!"
bloody hilarious the first time you see / hear it.

I have to say my favorite boss is Kel'Thuzad. Hes such a fun fight, more so when you leave your Ghoul on Defensive with leap on. What, Shadow Priest? I'll help with the Banshee! I have some RP to burn.
2 seconds later
"Where is my Ghoul?"
Bad Mr. Limpy, bad!
So many memories of that fight already. Such a good time.
BC Ark had to have one of the absolute best boss lines ever though. I ran that place just to hear them yell at each other;
Wrath-Scryer Soccothrates and Dalliah the Doomsayer
Soccothrates: "Then I commit myself to ignoring you."
Dalliah: "What do YOU know about commitment, sheet-sah?"
Draelan Mar 6th 2009 2:24PM
So many fun bosses... I like the Ogre Council before Gruul. Kiggler the Crazed is the first boss I've ever tanked as a Hunter, back before we got a Boomkin in our guild to handle it. (Was funny as hell trading aggro with another hunter as each of us in turn got changed into bunnies) Though I now occasionally tank Lady Blaumeux, so it's all good.
Also, Big Bad Wolf! The fact that you're changed into a little gnome wearing a bright red hood when he targets you is funny as hell. I was also very excited when I realized that my feign death wipes even that obsessive aggro.
And, as many have said, Voljaz is awesome. I like how, once you finish killing your clones, you can help your group mates. "I just killed my clone! Wait... is that murder or suicide??"
Talia Mar 6th 2009 2:39PM
Blackheart the Inciter, definitely. I loved "time for fun!", it always was amusing.
L Mar 6th 2009 3:24PM
I loved Opera
Heigan on 10 man...25 still lags me too much
and sarth for the quick easy badges
Candina@WH Mar 6th 2009 4:08PM
I like Harbinger Skyriss.
You never know exactly what will spawn. And Millhouse Manastorm FTW!
"I'm going to mess you up, Sweet Cheeks!"
Still makes me smile.
Jidiro Mar 6th 2009 5:15PM
Overall I love Keristraz in the nexus. The voice overs combined with me being a gnome rogue and having to permeantly move just makes this fight so much more real to me
The shivvra with the adds in MgT... Those voiceovers were immense!!! Exactly how I imagine bosses.
Old skool I still love Mr. Smite... It still tricks me everytime
