Why too many currencies actually helps progression
Badges of Justice, Battleground marks, Marks of Honor Hold and Thrallmar, Spirit Shards, Stone Keeper's Shards, Emblems of Valor, Emblems of Heroism, and now Emblems of Conquest: Ulduar will add yet another currency item into the game and Cypruss of Draka wonders, rightfully, if it's all just too much. The good news is that since the currency system was introduced, all of this stuff is out of our bags, but wouldn't it just be easier if instead of creating a whole new token system, Blizzard just charged a lot more for the gear?Bornakk says no -- he says that if they just kept the same tokens and charged more per item, people would end up doing Naxx, Ulduar, OS, and any other instances that dropped that token every single week rather than actually moving up through the content, which is what Blizzard wants us to do. He also says that the Emblem exchange mechanic is designed to help this -- you can do Ulduar and go backwards for the gear, but you can't do Naxx ten extra times to get Ulduar gear.
Which, we have to give it to Blizzard, is actually pretty smart. Yes, it does keep players from farming up the tokens (Blizzard knows that if you could run all the instances per week just to get one kind of token, there'd be lots of players who would), but it also keeps people progressing to get gear they can upgrade to. As Bornakk says, they've been trying to improve the Badge system ever since it was introduced in BC, and this method of introducing new currency to send players up the ladder is a result of their work there.

I think Blizzard are finally doing what they should have done with badges in BC: People who never went past kara could buy MH/BT equivalent gear wich is like ppl with a rating of 900 would be able to buy the arena items which require 2.2k rating if they do their weekly 10 games long enough. Finally there forcing people to progress to get better gear which is only fair considering how accessible they made raiding in wrath.

I do think they need to add new badge gear for the old badges, though. It could be the same item level as the old gear, but there needs to be something new for people who aren't at 25-man Ulduar level to spend their excess badges on.
I'm also a little skeptical of them making 10-man Ulduar drop Valor badges, since I'm not sure how that helps progression.

@kabshiel
Ulduar 10 will have gear with item level 213, the same as current Emblem of Valor and heroic raid gear. It will help progression for 10-man raids.

They could let you buy T8 gloves/robe with valor and T8.5 shoulders/pants with conquest: ilevel for T7.5 and T8 is the same (213)
I hope so, I've almost 200 badges of valor and no use for them :(
vazhkatsi Mar 6th 2009 12:23PM
they will probably make t8 chest and hands available for purchase with the valor badges, so people in just uld10 can get those,

@ sephria
You can use them in a number of ways - but the easiest is to go to the valor badge vendor and buy the BOE bracers and flog em. As one of the RL for our guild i rarely miss the raids. As a result i also had little to spend em on (we did 10 and 25 mans so got lots of heroic ones too). Eventually i noticed the bracers were BOE - so my alts got valour badge bracers now - even those not lvl 80. They go for a LOT on the AH too- but like everything else sell quick or the price will drop like a stone (esp now ive posted and a lot more ppl will find out)
Personally i suggest about 2k a shot for them, but have seen em for 4-6k. Dont know if they sold tho.

I just wished they were consistant. I have stacks of Halaa Research/battle tokens and Thrallmark marks in my bags.

Is it just me or does it just seems pointless to get older gear by doing new instances since by that point you should already have all the gear you need or be exchanging it for the new gear that drops.
Getting older gear by badge conversation in a downward swing just seems like a waste of badges.

Agreed, I don't understand why only a single currency was introduced. There should've been two brought in just like the Heroism/Valor pairing.
csdx Mar 6th 2009 11:39AM
they only need to introduce one new badge because uldar 25 is the only one that will have higher ilevel gear. The drops will likely be 213/226 for the bosses in 10/25 respectively (likely a smattering of 239's from hard modes). This means they can reuse emblems of valor for the Uldar10. Since the emblems will buy the same level gear as will drop in the 10 man. Only a new 25 man tier needs to be created. I expect this trend to continue in the next patch too.
This is mostly keeping in line with their idea that 10 and 25 man raiding are separate progression lines. My guild is pretty small and only does 10 man, the few 25mans I've done were random pugs (mostly VoA). Thus I really haven't seen any of the emblem gear.
Also there may be a few occasions where some best in slot items might actually come from a lower level item, just due to stat distribution/tier bonuses.
Kassu Mar 6th 2009 11:46AM
So you can gear for offspec quicker?
Or gear up your alts (Heirlooms).
Or buy random shizzle (Frozen orbs).
epsilon343 Mar 6th 2009 11:49AM
But have they said T8 gear will be purchasable with Emblems of Valor? As I understand it the only Tier gear we'll be able to purchase are the Conqueror's set from Ulduar-25. Why would I want to return to the old way of getting tiered gear (hoping for the drop and winning the roll) when I can just do Ulduar-25 and get some tokens and some gear to help gear up?

And they laugh and laugh in amusement while we scramble for the multitude of brightly colored baubles.

I really like this new badge system. It's good that Blizz didn't simply make items more expensive with one type of token.
A guild in my server was able to skip all the instances through Tempest Keep (and even cleared that with relative ease) just because they gathered up badges in BC for a month. That's just plain wrong in my opinion.
Satn Mar 6th 2009 11:15AM
this is idiotic, and only makes the playerbase dip in between raiding content upgrades even worse
Right now I have absolutely nothing to do in game (worthwhile, achievements aren't worthwhile) outside of raids, which my guild finishes in 3, sometimes 2, nights
Jay in Oregon Mar 6th 2009 11:37AM
Blizzard seems to be okay with that, though: they've even gone so far as to say that you should play other games if you're getting burned out on WoW, remember?
apoxic Mar 6th 2009 11:47AM
Oh.. my.. GOD! You have to actually do something other than WoW a total of 4 nights a week? Man, I feel so sorry for you.
Satn Mar 6th 2009 1:55PM
isn't it amazing that some people want to play a game more than 2 nights a week?
FREAKS!!
How dare they want to use their unlimited subscription time for more than 8 hours a week!?!?!
(I swear, you idiots are just a bunch of blizzard fanboys)

I'm not getting the reasoning behind having Valors drop in Ulduar-10 and Conquest in Ulduar-25. Basically the 10 man is a return to the BC system of farming an instance for a few drops. Are they implementing T8 for Valors cause I haven't heard anything like that. Yet for the 25 mans, which have consistently been easier than 10-mans, they get they badges to buy T8.5 gear as well as get the drops.
I'm seeing no incentive to run Ulduar-10 at this point.

^This.
Why would you smack your face on new content when you could roll easy mode old content for the same emblems? This flies in the face of the premise of the article.
