Arenas hotfixed, more changes to come

Blizzard applied some hotfixes over the past few days that should help make the maps less of a circus. The gates have been removed from the Ring of Valor, allowing players to engage as soon as the problematic elevators hit the arena floor. The moving pillars were adjusted to start the match in the elevated position, whereas they used to rise a few seconds after the match started. Most importantly, the damage from the flame wall was changed to break certain effects such as Fears and Roots after a certain amount of damage has been dealt. The last change is nice, but it's still problematic. The only thing that should damage another player in an Arena is another player.
They also have some changes planned for Patch 3.1, such as bug fixes for falling through the world (gotta hate that), and making it easier to plan around the events in the new Arenas. As gimmicky as they are -- and they're gimmicks, make no mistake about it -- Blizzard intends players to plan their strategies around the events such as the waterfall in the Dalaran Arena. So they've made these events easier to identify and prepare for. Blizzard poster Mumper says that most of the changes are taken from feedback on the forums, which is great. They seem hell bent on making these maps work, so even though I think the moving parts and fire (stupid, stupid fire) are terrible ideas for an Arena map, their constant tuning helps make things easier to swallow.

Yes, that would actually test player skill very well. Ever play a simple shooter online? One without different classes? One where everyone has the same abilities and the same attacks (weapons)? It is very, very apparent which players are better, which players have more 'skil'... which Blizz says they want test in Arenas.. player skill.

Actualy, thats not a bad idea, lol. Its so riddiculus, its awsome. Granted, im the type who challenged people to a no armor/weapon fist fight with anyone when I wait for people to get ready for a raid, so my opinion is biased, but it would be realy funny.

I'm kind of surprised WoWInsider hasn't mentioned that Ring of Valor has been disabled until 3.1.

People are arguing about 'skill caps'. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't take much skill to fear someone randomly into a fire wall, and no, if the other team doesn't have a class that has a fear-type ability, then no it is not an equal playing field. Suffice to say that arena is an equal playing field anyway.

**is not an equal playing field anyway.

It IS fair. You have access to the exact same options as your opponents, and which arena you go to is random.
To put it another way:
In a fight between a Mage and a Warlock, is the presence of the wall of fire fair to the Mage? No, because the Warlock can fear him into the wall, while he can't use the environment against the Warlock. Is the presence of a wall of fire fair to the guy who's playing the Mage? Yes, because he chose to play a Mage, and if he thinks Warlocks have it better he can reroll.

That makes no sense. You're saying it's fair because they have the option to reroll? It should be fair regardless of class.

"but are a bad idea in serious Arena play"
Yes, because WoW Arenas are SRS BIZNESS!
If you can't deal with environmental events, you're not as pro as you think you are. Have you ever seen what they did in the Coliseum?
