No current plans to let you spend Achievement Points
Every now and then, I hear through the grapevine that in the future, we will be able to spend our Achievement Points on, most likely, novelty items. This rumor has been around since Achievements were announced, and has even been mentioned by a blue or two. Unfortunately, it seems that implementing this is far from being in the works. Bornakk has confirmed that Achievement Points are "simply a marker of progression in the game" and that there are no current plans to work in a way to spend them.
How do you feel about this? Personally, I was hoping for the eventual vendor selling items like walking canes, pinwheel hats and walking-speed pogo sticks. Still, not being able to spend my points will not stop me from collecting them!

A pogo stick? /want

While I don't want to see them as currency, it would be nice to recognize people's different broad achievement levels. Someone who has 6000 achievement points has obviously done a lot more in the game than a fresh 80 DK that has only a few hundred. It would be nice to have something noticeable to set the players apart who have done more in the game. Maybe a new unique mount for every 1000 points above 4000 or something like that? Or maybe titles or tabards, or even all 3? Right now when I'm walking around in Azeroth I can't really tell who has 5000 points and who has 500 unless I want to compare achievements with every person who walks by. Would be nice to easily see who has a ton of achievements done.

I must admit that I was ready to post, "I just like having the points, I don't want to spend them!"
But, I agree. It would be nice to have certain rewards at different achievement point levels. Get 1000 and get the title "Novice" maybe. They could even give a certain temporary title to everyone (if anyone does) who has them all. They could be "Master" until there are new achievements at least. ;)
It would be cool to see those who have worked very hard on the achievements get some in game recognition that they have loads of points.

The pogo stick would be sweet, but ONLY if my night elf will do flips while he's on the stick at a random interval as he would if he were just jumping in place.

Depends what sort of "novelty" item it is.

Achievements are just another way to play a game. Being that WoW isn't the only one with the achievement system, it's something that on other systems/game that has given a player something to work towards. Sometimes, achievements are nothing more than busy work that force you to play everything the game has to offer, but in reality, they shouldn't be anymore than just a marker or a badge to show off (gloat even) about what someone has completed. I sure hope they don't implement any sort of rewards system for achievement points.

since the points are pretty static i imagine there would be problems purchasing things with points. i mean, eventually you'd get to a point where you can't get anymore points. people would want them refunded to buy other things, possibly new things.

I'm not a big fan of "spending" them but perhaps items given for once you reach certain milestones?
Deadly. Off. Topic. Mar 12th 2009 1:14PM
Actually, that does makes a lot more sense then spending them.
ahac Mar 12th 2009 1:23PM
Yea, maybe they could send you a currency item in mail when you reach 1000, 2000 points, etc... and then you spend that.
jdkenada Mar 12th 2009 3:36PM
I agree with the idea of letting you choose something for hitting certain achievement point totals (such as 5k, etc) in the form of tabards or mounts. Or perhaps an heirloom, or an improved means of transportation (like more than one hearthstone concept).

I hate achievements.
Hate them.
Haven't played an alt since their implementation. I can't stop.
Omestes Mar 12th 2009 3:59PM
I don't get it. Why does achievements keep you from playing alts? You don't have to go farm points.
I never got the hate that a minority of people give them, they are a completely optional part of the game...
Arcaria Mar 12th 2009 4:26PM
I think you missed the point Orestes. Noraa was making the point that he/she is always so busy chasing achievements that they never get on their alts. In other words, they hate being addicted.
Noraa Mar 12th 2009 5:05PM
Well, yes. It's OCD. Every time I sit down to play, I think okay, Alt time. I have many characters at 70.
But then, a friend comes on, and I just automatically say, "Want to grind BC reps?"
I can't stop. I hate PVP with a passion, but I can't see myself not trying to go for those, too.
Never had this problem before Achievements came out.
It breaks my heart we can't use the points for cool novelty items.

Achievements new cure for deadly diseases like AIDS, ebola, cancer and altoholism!!
WoWie Zowie Mar 12th 2009 1:09PM
they'll have to be careful not to sully the integrity of this game even further. this is after all an RPG of sorts. i like swords i like magic i like evil bosses with huge fangs.
top hat and cane, ya that'd be cool.
a pogo stick?? c'mon wasn't the addition of the chopper bad enough?
Dulock Mar 12th 2009 1:34PM
well considering that a pogo stick is just a stick and a spring I think your comparison to a chopper is a little absurd.
cjshrader Mar 12th 2009 1:35PM
Stuff like that has been around since Warcraft 2. If you want straight "swords and sorcery," you're in the wrong game.
