No current plans to let you spend Achievement Points
Every now and then, I hear through the grapevine that in the future, we will be able to spend our Achievement Points on, most likely, novelty items. This rumor has been around since Achievements were announced, and has even been mentioned by a blue or two. Unfortunately, it seems that implementing this is far from being in the works. Bornakk has confirmed that Achievement Points are "simply a marker of progression in the game" and that there are no current plans to work in a way to spend them.
How do you feel about this? Personally, I was hoping for the eventual vendor selling items like walking canes, pinwheel hats and walking-speed pogo sticks. Still, not being able to spend my points will not stop me from collecting them!

It'd be nice if they were -for- something, but for now I'm intent to horde the little bastards like my own secret stash of something special just for ME.
Almost to 6k...40 more points to go!!!

I dont understand all the confusion about the achievement system, especially since its practically note for note with the xbox live system.
As someone said, its a score. It represents how many things you've done in the game on that character.
As for rewards for x number of points...uhm we already get rewards.
Extra pets, tabbards, mounts, titles, etc. Those all come with the score. Thats your reward. Asking for more seems a bit...greedy.
sara Mar 12th 2009 1:48PM
But isn't this kind of reward what we're already seeing with titles like the Seeker or Loremaster and the proto drake achievements? You do this number of hard achievements, and you're rewarded, without spending your achievement points. I love the idea of receiving some kind of novelty item currency for it, but the achievements are often novelty items in themselves, with rewards built in. S'all I'm saying ;o)

"I was hoping for the eventual vendor selling items like walking canes, pinwheel hats and walking-speed pogo sticks. Still, not being able to spend my points will not stop me from collecting them!"
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Treeannah Mar 12th 2009 1:52PM
Not that I really care about spending them or not (I love spending time grinding out achievements just for the fun of it) but there are a level of points associated with each achievement, and as such one would expect that at some point in time those points would be useful for something, no? If not then why have them worth anything in the first place? Just take away the points portion and leave behind the achievement itself.
Connor Murphy Mar 12th 2009 1:52PM
I'm quite the opposite-- without *any* reward other than an insignificant number, I don't care to do most achievements.
Anything with a title, mount, pet, tabard and I'm game. Maybe sell items that require an achievement points rating a'la Arena Rating? [Clumsy Pogo Stick] Requires 1000 Achievement Points. That way you could still compare one person's progression score to another rather than having that number reduced.
Either way, I think everyone agrees there should be no gear-upgrades through achievements.
Shade Mar 12th 2009 3:18PM
Oh yeah. If they ever DID offer something for the points, it'd have to be something that's got nothing to do with ingame content or gives any kind of advantage over other players.
That said, mounts? No. Tabards or titles or dumb gimmick toys that are there purely for fun? Sure!

e-peen?

How do I feel about this?
Honestly, I don't believe anything Blizz says anymore when it comes to things they will or won't do with anything in game.
Lest we forget, they were never, ever, ever, ever, going to allow PvE > PvP transfers or take Brew of the Month out of the game...
Murdock Mar 12th 2009 2:02PM
Our guild (Sleeper Cartel) gives out a special title on the forums "Over Achiever" for whoever is top in the guild on points. Sure its not in game, but it still a cool little thing. We have 15 or so people that are actively vying for that # one spot now. #3 is a DK!
Kaorael Mar 12th 2009 2:03PM
The best option is probably a vendor with items that require a certain number of achievement items to buy / use, just like arena gear requires a certain rating. Of course achievements are meant to be for fun, so it would have to be items with no game value besides looking cool.
Dave Mar 12th 2009 2:05PM
what would be so wrong with unique hairstyles, unique shirts and other cosmetic things for your characters?
why not Bound-t0-Account things to dress up your bank alt with?
why not stupid toys to play with while you wait for raids to start like the tonks and the crashin thrashin stuff?
There are tons and tons of options here, perhaps not to buy with the points on a "spend 2000 points" and watch your total go down, but perhaps an Achievement Vendor that works like rep and when you attain a certain status you can buy certain things or whatever.
Preferably account-wide not character specific, that way you couldn't have people bitch about their alts not counting for anything.

I like the idea of getting prizes for reaching milestones, at the moment the only achievements I really care about are the ones that get me things, even novelty things such as tabards, mounts and titles. I work hard on trying to get these.
If there was, say, an achievement that was simply "Get 5000 Achievement Points" with a prize of a cool mount or title, maybe i'd care more about the other achievements.
Azhariel Mar 12th 2009 2:07PM
What do you mean?
Oil.
Andi Mar 12th 2009 2:21PM
I'd be neat if we got something for our achievement points "ranks", be it titles, tabards, mounts, pets, any of that. I don't want them to be a currency that is spent and has to be re-earned. I would be hard pressed to give up my achievement points...
Regardless, even if they say "we will never let you receive anything other than personal satisfaction from achievements," I'm still gonna keep 'em up. I'm addicted.
RetPallyJil Mar 12th 2009 2:11PM
I dunno ... Blizz doesn't do things randomly.
We're getting points; that's a deliberate addition to the game. Now, we might not be able to spend them per se, but they will likely count for something in the future.
Blizz just hasn't worked out what yet.
seanfury Mar 12th 2009 2:18PM
I agree with the milestone ideas. Every thousand points or so, you get a little gift.
I think, once we get there, there should be a title for doing 1000 achievements. Something like "*name* the Overachiever"
mirilene Mar 12th 2009 2:37PM
@truffled:
Screw you man. You're the type of customer that reinforces why Blizzard is so reluctant to say anything about anything to us.
People bitch and complain about something they dont like and Blizzard says "We have no plans to change that at this time" and then THINGS CHANGE and they make a change and then people hold it against them forever, often the exact same people!
THINGS CHANGE. I would rather them adapt and respond than be chained to some stupid statement they made 3 years ago before we had 11 million players and death knights and alliance shamans and all the other stuff that CHANGES THE GAME.
Truffled Mar 12th 2009 4:51PM
@mirilene
Wow, nowhere in my post did I say that I wanted or didn't want Blizz to change the things they do. I didn't take a stance at all. I only commented about things that they said /many times/ would not get changed that did. ALL I said was that I don't expect anything they say to be permanent. So there is no use getting up in arms over (or defending) the fact that you can't spend the points... really. Who knows? Tomorrow they may change it.
You need to calm down, friend.
ltgalloway Mar 12th 2009 2:51PM
Treat it like rep rewards? Once you've accumulated a certain amount you qualify for certain bop items
